Can you smell the beans!? Let's see when the release date is. Looks like DDB already got his bottle. Curious to see if it is all HYPE!? Who else is going to camp out for a bottle?:stuck_out_tongue:

Here's a question for you coffee peeps, Which is the best coffee you can buy!? Horus is using Kopi Luwak beans on his upcoming bottle release, which I hear is expensive but does that necessarily mean it's best!?

That is an incredibly loaded question. I would only partially answer it by saying that expensive does not always equal best.

I can give an example of a small event Alesmith held many months ago (shit, it might have been last year by now) where they had 4 different roasters use their coffee in speedway just to give patrons a glimpse at what different roasts/coffees could do in the exact same base.

While I am not a coffee drinker at all, I did find my favorite, and it ended up being a house-roast by one employee that opted to try and see what would happen. To me, it tasted really close to the espresso used in Hammerhead Speedway. The other roasters had nothing on it, at least for my crappy coffee palate.

The more coffee stouts I drink, more appreciation I get for the bean. Just had Goshawk's Beans & Only Void [Ethiopian Coffee\Green Can] this past weekend. Those beers blew my mind so now i'm all excited for this Bottle Release from Three Chiefs Brewing. Not excited to sleep on the streets of El Segundo to get a bottle, but judging by the hype FAHA brought, I'm pretty sure I will have to Camp Out.

The only coffee stout I've had was out of Marble in New Mexico. I remember it being tasty but not very strong in the coffee flavor. I'd bet you could brew it with Folger's and no one would really notice. There is a certain panache tho saying you are using some fancy beans by a local roaster.

I would have to think a better quality bean would produce a better tasting beer tho!? Just like anything in this world. you pay what you get for. most of the times...

But again, that is assuming that Geisha beans are better quality. Maybe they are for a lighter/floral roast but fail at a darker roast...there are too many variables to just assume "this is obviously better because the beans are expensive."

There is no single best coffee you can buy. Much like wine grapes, there are varietals grown on specific farms that tend to produce exceptional lots year in and year out (for example, certain Panamanian farms are known for their Geisha beans), but that doesn't mean they're objectively the best, even in a given year. On top of the vagaries of agricultural products, you then have the beans going to different roasters who each are going to produce a slightly different end product using the same green beans. Even after that, in the context of beer, you have a few different methods for getting the coffee into the beer, each of which are going yield slightly different flavors that hold up differently over time.

There's a tremendous amount of detail at each level of the industry - growing, processing, the sale of green beans, roasting, etc. - and if you're interested, I'd suggested diving into it to learn about the different growing regions and varieties of beans. However, this isn't really the right forum for that, and considering the odds of this thread still existing in three weeks, putting a significant amount of effort into a response about the nuances of coffee seems masochistic.

One thing I will say is that Kopi Luwak has largely fallen out of favor both in the coffee world at large and in the beer world both for ethical reasons, as well as questions of fraud throughout the supply chain. I'm sure it can be sourced in both ethical and authenticated ways, but it can be divisive in some coffee circles.

Hope the bottle count for this one is higher. The post-Faha line has me worried.

Just like most things in life, higher cost doesn't necessarily equal better quality / taste / etc.

For example, Jamaican Blue Mountain is really pricey and good if you're looking for a smooth cup without bitterness, but for some people it's not even close to their favorite coffee because everyone's palate is different.

Some of it is supply and demand, and a lot of it is marketing. Buyer beware.
