I'm an engineer. I keep spreadsheets. I just updated my beer spreadsheet to comply with the latest revision to beer styles here on BA.

In addition to the actual styles, BA also reorganized the categories under which they group the styles. (see Beer Styles).

Spreadsheets being spreadsheets, (and engineers being engineers), I decided to compute the percentage of beers I have logged in my spreadsheet for these categories. (Demonstrating that engineers are not boring; they just get interested in boring topics...) (OK, distinction without a difference?)

Anyway, here is my data: (this is individual unique beers entered in the spreadsheet, not amount of each category consumed)

    Category %
    Pale Ales 27%
    India Pale Ales 20%
    Stouts 11%
    Dark Lagers 9%
    Pilseners and Pale Lagers 9%
    Wheat Beers 5%
    Strong Ales 4.4%
    Brown Ales 4.1%
    Dark Ales 3.8%
    Bocks 2.5%
    Porters 1.9%
    Specialty Beers 1.9%
    Hybrid Beers 1.3%
    Wild/Sour Beers 0.3%

Your categories are more broad, but premium members can now access a page to break down their beer list by style, with percentages and beers drank in each category. It can also break down the origin US states and nations.

Personally, I love looking at my consumption habits with percentages. I wasn't dedicated enough to make a spreadsheet when I started and I don't really care enough to play catch up now.

Here are my consumption habits featuring my top 15 styles per my Beer Advocate beers list (style, number consumed, percentage, and average rating):
    American IPA | 182 | 13.34% | 4.13
    American Imperial Stout | 163 | 11.95% | 4.3
    American Imperial IPA | 128 | 9.38% | 4.22
    New England IPA | 56 | 4.11% | 4.34
    American Pale Ale (APA) | 52 | 3.81% | 4.07
    American Stout | 49 | 3.59% | 4.06
    Russian Imperial Stout | 47 | 3.45% | 4.21
    English Sweet / Milk Stout | 45 | 3.3% | 4.11
    American Wild Ale | 44 | 3.23% | 4.16
    Belgian Saison | 39 | 2.86% | 4.06
    American Porter | 30 | 2.2% | 4.08
    American Brown Ale | 25 | 1.83% | 4.11
    Fruit and Field Beer | 23 | 1.69% | 3.68
    American Barleywine | 19 | 1.39% | 4.06

    They're actually BA's categories!
My spreadsheet does all of that, too, and it has been able to well before Premium Membership existed!

Here are my top 15 styles:
    American Pale Ale (APA) 14%
    American IPA 13%
    German Märzen / Oktoberfest 6%
    American Imperial IPA 5%
    German Kölsch 3.8%
    German Pilsener 3.8%
    American Imperial Stout 2.8%
    Belgian Witbier 2.8%
    American Stout 2.2%
English Extra Special / Strong Bitter (ESB) 2.2%
    Bohemian Pilsener 2.2%
Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy 1.9%
    American Brown Ale 1.6%
    American Lager 1.6%
    English Bitter 1.6%

(American IPA should actually be a bit smaller, since I still have some NE IPAs categorized there - again, I go by what BA says, and not all (any?) of the MN-brewed NE IPAs that I have tried have been changed as yet. If those were fixed, NE IPA move into the top 15)

    And, top 15 states:
    1 Minnesota 47%
    2 Michigan 11%
    3 Wisconsin 6%
    4 Oregon 5%
    5 Iowa 5%
    6 California 2.8%
    7 Washington 1.9%
    8 Kansas 1.6%
    T9 Massachusetts 0.9%
    T9 North Dakota 0.9%
    T11 Missouri 0.6%
    T11 Ohio 0.6%
    T13 Alaska 0.3%
    T13 Colorado 0.3%
    T13 Idaho 0.3%
    T13 Illinois 0.3%
    T13 Kentucky 0.3%
    T13 Louisiana 0.3%
    T13 Maryland 0.3%
    T13 Montana 0.3%
    T13 Nebraska 0.3%
    T13 New York 0.3%
    T13 Oklahoma 0.3%
    T13 Pennsylvania 0.3%
    T13 Utah 0.3%
    T13 Vermont 0.3%
    T13 Texas 0.3%
    T13 Wyoming 0.3%

OK, now even I am bored! :stuck_out_tongue:

That is mighty impressive! Just wanted to mention it in case it's of interest to people who don't have spreadsheet skills (like me).

I guess I mixed up BA's style categories vs. specific styles. BA only breaks down the latter, so it would be up to a user to total their beers and calculate the number of pale ales, stouts, lagers, etc.

I'm a Premium member, but I can't seem to find such detailed stats under my profile. So I assume one would have to actually rate/review beers in order for that data to be tabulated and accessible, just clicking the 'Got' box for each beer would not be sufficient. Is that correct?

I am curious. What makes an American Porter a different style of beer than a non-specified-country-of-origin Porter (besides country of origin) ?

By this reasoning, could an American brewery produce a Porter that is not an "American Porter" ?

Also, it has been my understanding that a Porter is an ale, whereas a Baltic Porter is a lager. Is that correct ?

I am impressed - I am also an engineer and I do a fair amount of work with statistics (double down on evil there). I didn't really update the "by style" capability since the premium thing does it for me now.

Last time I updated it by style, I was surprised to learn that saison/farmhouse ales are my number one style at a measly 10%, followed by American IPA at 6%, American Wild Ale at 5%. American Pale Ale (5%), American DIPA (4%), and American Imperial Stouts (4%) follow. Then it is just a whole pile of "hey...try this" beers at 1 to 5 of each style, so 1% or way less. The style update really didn't change this - number one style is now Belgian saison is all that changed at the top.

What I really use this spreadsheet for is to track beers my wife likes... Out of 333 beers she has tried, she has liked 20%, 4% are favorites, 28% fall in the "ok" non-commitment category, and 47% are "hell, no". I remind her of this when she asks "did you put a beer in the fridge for me" - my odds of success are non-existent! For me, 60% of the beers I have tried fall into the like enough to have again category and 30% land in hell no territory, 3% in the "OK" no-man's land, and 7% I consider favorites.

Are you perhaps confusing "categories" (my term for the groupings of styles that BA uses) with the actual styles?

Under the "category" of "Porters", BA lists these styles:
    American Imperial Porter
    American Porter
    Baltic Porter
    English Porter
    Robust Porter
    Smoke Porter

I have something similar, along with my average rating and average deviation by style -- but haven't updated all the styles yet -- I need to compare my count by style with what BA gives me, and then figure out where I need to recategorize (for example, breaking out my NE IPA's) -- that might take a while. I think I only have about 100 I need to adjust, the problem is identifying those 100 (out of about 3200 lines).

I also have some redundancy, because I track untappd ratings too, and they typically let you check in by vintage -- so I have something like 7 distinct untappd entries for BCBS in my spreadsheet, but the BA numbers are the same for each.

Premium members get all of this calculated for them. It's one of the perks: https://www.beeradvocate.com/premium/

(I think there's a similar thread that was started once we launched the extended user stats perk.)

    Most, but not all!

My spreadsheet contains more than just the data here on BA - which is mostly of interest to just me, I suspect. For example, it includes the ratings for RB as well as here, (the 2 sites have slightly different calculations from the L-S-T-F-O (A-A-T-P-O for them) numbers.

My sheet calculates an overall rating based on my own weighting factors for the L-S-T-F-O ratings, which is different still.

Plus, it includes my old "original" letter grade rating (from before I started doing reviews) of an A+ to F scale, which I continue to use for continuity sake.

It includes IBU (if known) in addition to ABV.

In the end, if I compare the the top 15 beers from my ratings using the BA scale with the top 15 beers from my ratings (same base numbers for L-S, etc.) using my weighting factors, only 2 of the 15 are in the same position (as it turns out, the top 2) and only 11 beers make the top 15 on both lists. Does anyone care besides me? No.

Plus, I can sort and calculate to my heart's content!

And, finally, why would I want someone else to have all this fun?:sunglasses:

Don't misunderstand; I'm not devaluing the stats BA provides. They are a very good perk for premium members. But, I tend to suffer from the engineering disease: NIH syndrome... (As well as the need to always "improve" things, and analyze things, and ...).
