    Hey guys,

This is my first post outside of trading. I was talking with someone on here, and they got me thinking about vernacular unique to beer and beer advocate. They said something along the lines of, "I doubt you'd want to trade for beer out of (insert flat, brown, Midwestern state) unless you're a serious ticker.". I'm assuming "ticker" is one who goes above and beyond, striving to tick off any and all boxes of beer to try. That got me thinking about beer lingo unique to the beer and trading world.

Stupid post, I know. But I thought maybe we could start a little dictionary of both important and obscure BeerAdvocate terminology.

1: Ticker. One who will stop at nothing to check off beers from their personal bucket list. Both rare whales, and obscure Arkansas beer. Ticker. "Tihk-urr"

2: Beer Karma. The mysterious Beer Advocate reward and ranking system, where members earn points for site participation. Points determine ranking from Initiate to Poo-Bah. The exact formulae change occasionally, are suspected but not known by members, and discussion is discouraged. It should just happen. The first rule of Beer Karma is: you do not talk about Beer Karma.

3: Truck Chaser. Someone who drives from beer store to beer store, hoarding rare/cult release beers on release day/hour. If done efficiently, this person knows when deliveries happen and in what order, so they can arrive at a store and chat up the manager as they are putting out the target beer. They also are on every list in town at stores that reserve by list. The implication of this derogatory term is that this person captures more than their "fair share" of a limited release. This person sees themselves as putting in the time and thought to accomplish a goal, something their critics don't do.

I thought ticker was someone obsessed with tasting as many beers as possible and would try anything just because it's new to their list.

If my neighbor want's to spend his time chasing delivery trucks that's fine with me. While he's out I'll just invite his wife over for coffee. She loves coffee.

4: Adjunct. In beer terms, an adjunct is an un-malted grain. In general terms an adjunct is something that is added to something else as a supplement, not an essential ingredient. This discontinuity in definition causes confusion and heated argument on BA forums when someone refers to coffee, bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, peppers, spices, fruit/vegetables, etc as adjuncts.

In brewing terms adjunct refers to a source of fermentable sugars that are not derived from barley. Wheat, oats, sucrose etc are adjuncts.

10x Likes for this. When you see @jesskidden lingo in a post, such as "Calling @jesskidden" you just know the purpose behind it.

For my real contribution to this thread I'll contribute the entire alphabet. So often you see beers referred to as KBS, CBS, KBBD, PtE, PtY, TH, BCBS (aka BCS) and so on, that you have to scratch your head in wonder at some of them that are more regional or obscure. If anyone starts short-cutting the names of single-name beers, we're all in a world of hurt.

Great. Now what the hell is a Poo-Bah. I'm just putting it out there, I am going to be extremely disappointed if this has nothing to do with Whinny The Pooh....

it doesn't have anything to do with Whinny the Pooh, does it...

It denotes supreme accomplishment, though there has been discussion of a Grand/Great/Master/Super/Turbo Poo-Bah. Note that besides the title, attainment of Poo-Bah status also earns you the steak knives.

    That's because:
Cultural Appropriation- the term 'adjunct' was appropriated by novices who didn't understand its proper use with regards to brewing jargon.:grin:

Well, as The Encyclopedia has pointed out, the inclusion of sugars within the definition may be true within the American brewing industry, but not in Europe where they are thought of separately.

6: IPA: India Pale Ale, a beer style that is notably hoppy, often moderately to outrageously bitter, widely popular, best enjoyed fresh, but is not synonymous with "beer". India Pale Ale does not seem to have any recent association with India.

    7. Malt maid: a la "milkmaid" from the original Clerks movie. A beer drinker so concerned with dates (s)he'll pull out every can and bottle from the shelf to find the one that lasts for 2 years.

I can clearly see this thread will, once and for all, clear up any questions I had about beer and it’s unique lingo.
    Uh. . no.
    It’s all fun.
