Second new beer of the day. Sante Adarius Rustic Ales - Tomorrow Today IPA. More succint review since Ill be typing it on my phone. For those unfamiliar with how SARA does their hazy IPAs, these are typically West Coast wrapped in a New England body.

Murky light yellow with a finger of white head. The head retention is poor, but there is some lacing left on the glass. Smell is quite pungent with bright notes of pine, grapefruit and mango. Taste follows the nose perfectly, with pine and citrus dominating the action. The feel is a spot-on NEIPA with a creamy texture and medium carbonation. No abv is noticeable. An incredible IPA overall. Perhaps the best mix of WC and NE styles that I've had.

    4.25 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.5. Final rating: 4.49 (rDev: +5.2%)

    Cheers!

Hi, hope everyone is having a nice Sunday afternoon. This is the first rain free day for a while in my neck of the woods, let me get some much needed pre-winter yard work completed.

First beer is a nice American Pale Ale I recently received from @Harrison8 (who I believe probably deserves a beer more than I do after running the NYC Marathon this weekend), but yard work is hard too.

8 Bit Pale Ale from Tallgrass Brewing Co.
Just like the video game pictured on the can, this one is a classic.

Beautiful pour with thick and creamy head, just off-white, that sticks around for a while before settling into thin foamy cap and leaving tons of clingy lacing on the glass.

Crystal clear, golden straw colored beer. Slightest amber tint.

The aroma is not huge but offers grain, a hint of citrusy hop and some grassy malt.

Flavor is grainy malt, some residual malt sweetness and a moderate level of bitterness. Hop flavors come through as a bit of bitter citrus and some earthy resins.

Just lighter than medium body and persistent moderate carbonation.

Sometimes you just feel like this kinda brew. Nothing earth shattering but full flavored, balanced and nothing offensive. Tastes like beer tasted 15 years ago.

NBS#2, again new to both BA and myself. Sudwerk's the Original Tall Boy is a Hoppy Hazy Lager with Galaxy and Citra brewed to aid fundraising for the Sacramento Zoo.

Can dated 09/25/18 into a Willi glass. Honestly wasn't sure what glass to select for a Hazy Hoppy Lager...

L: Pours golden with subtle haze, 1+ finger of variable density sticky white head with good retention and left ringed lacing.

S: The Galaxy overpowers the Citra on the nose, peach and bubblegum dominate for my senses. Subtle lime and mango once the beer warmed.

T: Follows the nose well, but with more prominence of the lime aspect. Finishes with mild bitterness, moderate acidity and subtle astringency, subtle bitterness and acidity linger on the palate.

F: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, slight tingling from the acidity but otherwise slick on the tongue and swallow.

O: Really didn't know what to expect from this one. Kind of feels like a unicorn, but I definitely enjoyed what they were attempting. Not something I'd seek out, but I'd certainly have again.

Hello, NBS, happy Sunday! I haven't done any trading, but I really enjoy reading these BIF reviews, particularly the blind bottles. It's fun to see how close everyone gets to guessing what's contained within. Today I have a local brew from Three Weavers.

Blood Junkie, imperial red ale, canned 8/15, 8.7%.

Pours brownish from the can, but does have a bright red color in natural light. Finger and a half of off-white head fades slowly and leaves thick bands of lace on the drink down.

Smells of sweet malt and herbal, piney hops.

Tastes of clean, sweet malt. Hops are piney and prominent. Quite bitter, and that bitterness lingers long. Alcohol is detectable in the flavor and adds to the sweetness. Mouthfeel is thick, creamy and sticky.

Overall, this reminds me of an amped-up Celebration.

    Cheers!

Yup, yard work turned into a bonfire. It got too windy to rake leaves so common sense says “it’s bonfire time!” I have the hose, don’t worry

Opened this one from @Roguer from the last NBS BIF. You trying to kill me Andrew! (More on that later).

22 ounce bottle, no date observed. Not sure when their 5th anniversary was but assumed it was bottled around then. Pours a dingy brown, little head to speak of except for a small ring of soapiness around the inside.
The nose...I can tell right away it’s going to be sweet. Maybe some toffee and caramel too. Chocolate covered raisins also.
First sips reveal something special. Caramel sweetness, raisins, definitely some chocolate in there, a bit of smoke and/or peat. Boozy yet incredibly smooth for the high abv. I don’t get a lot of barrel or scotch.
Slick and smooth, just a little bit of burn.
Great beer and worth an evening spent with it.

I did not realize this was over 16% ABV! Probably going to recap this to enjoy more tonight. That being said, this beer drinks very smooth and that alcohol is just about undetected.

Today's entry is 75 minute IPA from dogfish head. A delicious amber color, it has a moderate hint of maple in the smell that pulls you in. The flavor isn't as sweet as the smell, but there's just a hint of sweetness on the front of my tongue and on the back of my tongue in the aftertaste. The maple does seem to knock the edge off of what would otherwise be a quite dry west coast ipa. An enjoyable beer, still glad I didn't grab a sixer. Worth a visit though, it is well balanced in the way they use the maple.

Millstream Great Pumpkin Imperial Stout, 7.6% ABV. Pours black with 1.6 fingers of tan head. Nose is strong sweet vanilla/marshmallow, and nutmeg. Taste is also sweet vanilla/marshmallow, and nutmeg, slight bitter close. Excellent mouthfeel, and overall a great 'smores beer, confusingly.

Had to have this one standing at the airport, when I checked my bag it was 1 pound overweight, I had already removed everything except the beer and I wasn't going to throw one away or pay the $100 up charge for 1 beer.

Appears to be a hazy golden color but as I enjoyed it from the can I can't comment on the head.
Smells of pineapple, pine, and crackery malts.
Taste follows with the addition of pithy citrus.
Medium bodied with ample carb levels.
Overall a pretty tasty one from TH thst isn't too sweet.

Happy Sunday, New Beer Sippers and commentators. And thanks @cjgiant for hosting today. I had hoped to enjoy the extra hour of sleep but our furnace went out overnight causing all kinds of angst. It's now fixed, thankfully.

My first new beer today came in a trade with @bstyle - Pipeworks' Coconut Almond Abduction, a 10.5% Imperial Stout. While Pipeworks now distributes to New Jersey, we only seem to get the "standard" beers regularly so this was a treat. It's like drinking a Mounds bar with lots of milk chocolate, almonds, and coconut. The body is a little thin but overall it's very good. Here's my full review. I'm usually fairly close to the average but it's very rare that I hit it dead on:

    4.15/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

Received in a trade with @bstyle. Poured from undated 750 ML bottle into a tulip glass. It pours ink black. The medium khaki colored head dissipated quickly leaving a thin sheen of lacing. The nose features roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, almonds, and light char/smoke. When sipped, the first taste I notice is rich milk chocolate and freshly-brewed coffee. At mid-sip there is a distinct flavor of almonds and coconut. It tastes like a Mounds bar. The is increasing bitterness at the finish. This stout has a mouth feel that is medium-thick with a low level of carbonation. The warming 10.5% ABV wasn't overly apparent at first but I really noticed it in the second pour. Overall, this is a well-conceived and crafted Imperial Stout with lots of flavor. It makes a great after dinner sipper.

I hope you're all enjoying your new beer(s) today. As always, the reviews are informative and fun!

Hey folks and Happy Sunday to you!

I've been fairly busy with beer shenanigans and yard maintenance this weekend - it's currently rainy and quite cold (mid-30s) so I'm thankful that I finished most of my raking and bagging yesterday. While I love fall in Minnesota, it's a hell of a lot of work for homeowners - I'm not looking forward to winter per se, but I'm looking forward to a little break from yard work.

One of our local and noteworthy breweries had a beer release yesterday - so I lined up with friends and strangers at 8am (the person at the very front of the line was there since 5:15, apparently) and did a bit of bottle-sharing and chatting until 10:30 when the brewery opened. I grabbed bottles and headed home, as the taproom didn't officially open until noon. I decided to come back today for a pour and to watch a bit of the Vikings game.

Here we have Barrel Theory's BA El Gato Diablo:

The nose is rich with cinnamon, peppers, chocolate and vanilla. I'm liking it. After warming a bit, the beer has a bit of smoky pepper, a fairly forward spice presence, lots of chocolate, and light vanilla and cinnamon notes. It's quite good. The body is, as with all Barrel Theory stouts, just a bit thinner than one might desire - carb is quite understated as well, which is absolutely fine with me. I'd like more barrel, but there is a bit of dry wood to the finish. It's very smooth and tasty for a high ABV beer - no heat whatsoever from the alcohol.

A very decent effort from Barrel Theory - I'm quite pleased that I scored bottles. Speaking of - one of these may be making its way in to an upcoming BIF box...

Second beer of the day is from @LloydDobler in his insanely generous Cans-Cans BIF box #4. Yes, that's right - Chris dropped FOUR boxes on me. And he's threatening a fifth. WTF, right? I hope his sender in the Newbies ThanksXmas round sees this and punishes the fuck out of him accordingly! After all, he'll probably be bailing on us in the spring when his first child is born - gotta hit him while we still can!

Regardless - drinking Transient's Mind to Devour this afternoon:

This is one of the better Transient IPAs I've had - hazy, clean, sweet, lightly hoppy, juicy, and finished very clean and ever so slightly dry. Very drinkable - perhaps a bit too much so! I might ask for a little bit of complementary bitterness... but I just say that about nearly every NE style IPA.

This is pretty fantastic. Thanks, Chris - for the glassware and for the beer!

I've got fuck-all to do today, for once - so I may just stop by the couch for a nap now. I hope you're all enjoying your Sunday - have a great day, and I'll see you all again soon!

Their 5th anniversary was relatively recent; I don't know what month, but this bottle came out in 2018.

Now, if I recall correctly, I also sent you the 4th anniversary, so that one will have just a touch of age on it. Not sure which of the two I prefer, honestly, having only had them sparingly, and on draught.

New VABA IPA Sunday, Part III

So as I delve into my third beer from @VABA, I wasn't sure which to go with. I think I chose properly, but only after I poured the beer. I read the label, "Imperial IPA brewed with Centennial, Chinook, Citra, and Simcoe hops." I recognize all of those hops, and Society and Solitude #12 by Hill Farmstead seemed like a beer that might have some characteristics I was familiar with.

Then I poured what seemed, specifically relative to what I was expecting, like a brown sludge from the can. Well, after taking a few photos, to the internet machine I did fly, where I found one extra bit of information: it's an Imperial Red IPA. Ok... so I'm now curious if it will be more of a hoppy red or just an IPA with a little more toasted malt flavor.

Ok, even knowing this is a "red IPA" doesn't make it look much more appealing. It's got that NE IPA cloudiness to it, which gives a bit of a sewer water-like look to it. To be less gross, I could go with a loose-leaf iced tea with a good bit of lemon squeezed into it. On the plus side, the lightly toasted marshmallow head is pretty strong, with nice lacing abilities.

It's looks may or may not be influencing my olfactory sense, as this has somewhat of a lemon tea feel to it. A little toasted bread, some amber malts, a citrusy (lemon and tart grapefruit) hop main note, with a slight woodsy undertone.

The beer is pretty smooth, with subdued carbonation. The hop notes actually come out up front, though they are not alone. A nice medium brown bread with a light toast to it mixes with the hops to include citrus pith, light mango, and even a little sweet blueberry. Mid taste, the marmalade of fruit gets a little sprinkle of light brown sugar. There's a little more toast and even a very light metallic note I get with amber ale malts. A light woodsy bitterness joins a lemongrass note to close out the beer.

I'm not generally a big fan of bitter hoppy ambers, but this actually plays to me a little more like a NE IPA with it's lower bitterness level to which toasted malts are added than a more typical malty amber into which a bunch of bittering hops are thrown. I'm guessing the saying, "don't judge a book by its cover" applies here, as does perhaps, "don't knock it until you've tried it."

So, I've got one more beer from my fellow Virginian, up next...

Pre-edit: I see @VABA reviewed this, as well. I totally agree with the enjoyable complexity and/or nuance in this, even if that didn't quite come across as all that tropical to me.

    Oh well Im back
CL Powder Dreams NEIPA with Mosaic Lupulin Powder, Wakatu and Bravo Hops.
Pours a very hazy burnt orange gold with a decent off white head that dissipates rather quickly to a thin ring leaving very little lacing.
Lots of Mosaic aromas of tropical fruits, some grapefruit and other citrus and pine.
Taste is tropicals, citrus and piney bitterness. More bitterness throughout and very little sweetness as expected in "NEIPAs". Malt presence is darker but minimal. Tasty though.
Medium bodied with decent carb throughout and an oily hop slickness. More to the dry side with bitter finish and a little touch of alcohol.
Hop juice for sure but not sure if it totally fits the mold for what most would call a NEIPA. Good brew just lacks that soft sweetness. This is a little rougher around the edges which didnt offend me. Worth a buy like most of the series for sure. Cheers!
