Someone I have never met is coming over for Thanksgiving dinner. I have been told that this person loves sweet, malty, stouts or porters. I don't like that style so I am unfamiliar & don't know what to buy. Any recommendations ? Please keep in mind distribution to Buffalo NY. Thanks

One I've had recently that was very good is Boulevard Brewing's Tough Kitty. Sweet, creamy stout with a lot of sweet chocolate (not the usual bitter chocolate) and some coffee.

I'd say Green Flash Double Stout but good luck finding it these days. An easy-to-get alternative option would be Guinness Foreign Export.

Aside from the Sweet/Milk Stouts being mentioned I'd suggest you take a look at some Porters as well. They typically have a lot less roasted malt bitterness than stouts do. Young's London Porter, Samuel Smith Old Tadcaster or Yorkshire Stingo come to mind.

I think the difficulty in this thread will be recommending milk/sweet stouts that do not have any spices in them.

I'm guessing you meant Fuller's London Porter... and Samuel Smith Taddy Porter... and are thinking of something totally different than Stingo.

Wow, that's what I get for going off memory. Somehow I bungled Young's Double Chocolate Stout with Fuller's London Porter. As for Taddy Porter, I have no excuses there that was just plan wrong. Thanks for correcting me on them!

I'm into buying local, and not knowing much about the hyperlocal options besides occasioning a pub that might have speculated in a keg of Community beer, my general consensus is Southern Tier founded in nearby Lakewood, NY.
Any stout in their Blackwater Series fits this bill. It has pure and decadenty sweet dessert type offerings like Creme Brulee or Salted Caramel. And it has versions that feature a chunkier, earthier chocolate tone like Choklat or Choklat Oranj. The sweet chocolate malt and roastier coffee notes really pair nicely in Choklat.

So, go drink locally and buy some Southern Tier.

I like sweet and malty stouts and porters. But I hate overly sweet ones, so with a guest you've never met maybe steer clear of the desert style ones that have been suggested.

I'd go with something that isn't extreme in any way - just a solid, classic example of the style that your guest should appreciate.
Bell's special double cream, Edmund Fitz, founders porter, anchor porter, SN stout, Mad Riverand Steelhead stout, Fuller's London porter...or Anderson valley Barney flats if you want to go the oatmeal route. It's hard to imagine someone who likes stouts not liking those.

Ask your friend what a few beers this person likes are and go from there.

    Bells porter

    Enjoy

How about Samuel Smith’s Organic Chocolate Stout? The chocolate is not bitter/dark chocolate, rather it is awfully sweet.

Here’s something out of left field. You know his favorite style of beer. Now let it be known to your guest, your favorite style. Its always nice to bring something (beer) for the host of a party. This guy is obviously a beer dude so he may be up to the challenge.
Could make a great ice breaker and take the pressure off you.
This is a style (stouts/porters) after 10 years of crafting that I am just beginning to explore. Thanks for the original question. I have some amazing recommendations to.try.

Keep in mind, these southern tier stouts are very sweet. You may want to mix them up with slightly drier stouts and porters. Although not terribly sweet, victory at sea and it's variants have nice semisweet additional flavoring without tooth rotting sweetness (but not without the abv)

Basically any stout or porter with added chocolate, peanut butter, etc. is gonna be sweeter than the base style for the most part.
