TIFU by not setting the right temp on the controller. I thought it was set for 58. It was set for 68. The red ale was being fermented with saflager 34/70

    Hello all,

Started brewing all grains last month (did a Black IPA but was supposed to be a stout hahaha, just made a mistake in hop additions!).

First post here  couldn't wait until this coming Saturday to let you know that for November its gonna be a Best Bitter for me. Can't find good ones here so I'll brew one. All out of my crazy head, meaning I might not follow the guidelines for the style  I let my creativity free!

So good to read your post, gives me lots of ideas!

    Can't wait to brew!

    Cheers!
    Eric

Bought 2lbs of Nelson Sauvin today... Have not seen these hops available for well over a year and have grown to absolutely love this hop in commercial beers... Decided to scan the interwebs today and found a vendor that had 2018 crop, 1lb bags available. Picked up two and now I need to make a nice CTZ and Nelson packed IPA soon with my beloved WLP007! (After my Kolsch and Weizenbock, though!).

Small 3 gallon batch based loosely in the BYO Everett clone. Used my horrific well water and managed to hit my target pH on the nose which was nice for once. Gonna brew this same beer three times in a row and treat the roasted grains different every time to see what the impact is. This round was everything in at the beginning of the mash’s. Next will be saving them dark grains for the end, last will be doing a cold steep and adding at the end of the boil.

A little high on the OG so she’s gonna be rather robust that’s for sure.

Just kegged my first Tripel. Grist was 85% Belgian Pilsner and 15% table sugar, mashed at 151. Used 1214 for the first time with a big starter and fermented in the low 70s. OG was 1.079 and I expected a fairly dry beer, but the FG tonight was 1.003. Holy crap! Tasting dry now with big banana notes but I'm looking forward to the carbed version.[IMG]

Brew Betty totally nailed two brews in November. Brew Betty has been nailing soooo many brews since she was bandwagon snubbed several years ago. Brew Betty has noticed how often she has been mentioned here since then. Brew Betty has noticed she is still being mentioned here recently. Clearly, you have missed me. It's OK to admit it silently to yourselves.

    Brew #1:

IPA - 70% Citra and 30% Vic Secret. 1# of hops. Carefully constructed malt bill fermented with wy1098. Exclusively dry hopped in the keg.

    Brew #2:

IPA - 70% Azacca and 30% Vic Secret. 1# of hops. Carefully constructed malt bill fermented with wy1098. Exclusively dry hopped in the keg.

Haven't tasted either because hydrometer samples are meant to please the Sewer Gods. Nevertheless, I have no doubt these two hoppy beers will destroy pretty much anything I can buy that costs less than 50% more.

I log out for a couple years and my Beer Karma gets reduced to Zero? What in the Sam Hill is going on here? I had almost 1000 Karma and a more than noob BA title that I was comfortable with. "Initiate" with zero karma is insulting. I have 2692 likes.

    Zero karma does not compute!

Refined my equipment profiles in Beersmith, as lately I have been undershooting my OG's and ending up with too much volume in the kettle. I think when I made new style specific profiles (lager, standard ale, imperial ale, IPA, DIPA) some of my losses I didn't adjust properly. So I reduced some of the values and "reverse engineered" my past few brews to the profiles and we should all be good now. Basically, my IPA/DIPA losses were used for my lager ones, which are not nearly as hopped of course (2-3oz vs. 8-12oz).

Also tapped my new Dunkel, which I really dig. Came out very nice! Pics and such coming later.

Are the wort losses to hops not specified as "per ounce" or something like that? Just curious, as I don't use Beersmith.

No, in beersmith you set your mash tun and lauter ton losses (whatever leftover under your false bottom or whatever), then set your loss to trub/chiller - which is basically your hop loss mixed with whatever you leave at the bottom of your boil kettle when transferring to fermenter. So any volume here adds more volume into the boil kettle to offset the loss. So for DIPA's my value is something like 1.5gal, while a lager may be .5 to .75 as I tend to leave more trub behind anyway.

There is also a fermenter loss value as well you can use, which comes off your batch size. So I technically do 5.5 to 5.75 gallon batches into my fermenter, to net 5 gallon in the keg due to dry hop and trub/yeast. My post boil volume, regardless of style, is around 7 gallon give or take.

It would be really nice now that you mention it, if the program would automatically do the loss per ounce of hops and such. But having refined my profiles over time, I am usually spot on except recently due to my own fault when I made the new profiles.

    What program are you using?

Brewed SNPA clone on Friday, will add some dryhopping with Cascade just to kick it up a notch. Kegged NEIPA yesterday and now dryhopping with 4 oz of Citra. Going to make a starter tonight so I can brew another batch this weekend. Busy, busy, busy.
