I am an insufferable pretentious asshole, who like to fetishize his hazecans, olde lambics, and cakeypricey imperial stouts. But in times of need....nothing beats Lagunitas.

Their seasonal releases are genuinely fantastic. Particularly, Born Yesterday, High Westified/Willefied, and Brown Shugga. I get them at Whole Foods. I just got a six pack of Brown Shugga for 8.49! That's a 10% American Strong Ale, and a damn good one at that. That's a pretty ludicrous deal. A six pack of High Westified/Willefied went for $11.99. That's a 12% BA imperial coffee stout six pack! And both were damn good, particularly Westified. I hope this year delivers.

Then there's the odd cats: Dave Murray's Scotch Ale, Cherry Jane and Dark Swan were also very tasty.

They have a few stinkers, but overall, I don't think there's another brewery that's as consistently good fairly priced.

The only thing I don't quite get is why Sucks! now actually sucks.

    So, yeah, God Bless Lagunitas.

Tony Magee is a sanctimonious hypocritical blowhard. Lagunitas can suck a dick. They won't get a dime from me.
And I don't care that Tony sold his entire interest in the company. But I'm glad to hear you enjoy it.

The Waldos and High West/Willettized might just be the best beer values in all of craft. Name a better beer in those styles that is cheaper...

He is very outspoken and has contradicted himself on a few things..

Off the top of my head he said he would never can a beer because cans are bad then turned around and canned the 13th of never.

He also filed a lawsuit against Sierra Nevada over trademarks disputes for Hop Hunter over the label looking like Lagunitas IPA.

I mean I know I am leaving out one or two things I can't remember but I personally don't think he is a bad guy. If we knew as much about most brewers as we know about Tony we could all hate them all equally.

The Sierra Nevada thing sounds dodgy. I don't think changing his mind over the canning thing means anything.

You're totally right, and I don't understand why people expect brewers to be any different than most people: seeking financial interest when they can. That doesn't make people assholes.

We are all friends here, you don't have to feel constrained in your verbiage.

Please, put into words my feelings on Tony Heineken.

Cuz, I'm certain you can say it, way more eloquently than I, but, fuck that stoned, thick, not-as-cool-as-he-thinks-he-is, talking meatwad. And, maybe meatwad is overly complimentary.

Good for him: he created a business, in an industry he professes to love. He grew that business to the point that a large, multi-continental company, in the same industry, wanted his property.

And wrote the right sized check. Congrats brohammer. Now, go away.

I begrudge no one their success. But, don't whisper sweet things in my ear, while your hand is reaching towards the thing you truly desire.

Lagunitas brews a number of good beers but so does about 1,000 other breweries!

    A couple updates for you...

There will be no more High Westified. They do not have access to the barrels. Just Willetized going forward (or possibly another barrel?).

Also Sucks isn’t going to be good or suck for awhile. They are scrapping it until further notice.

That said, I agree with your sentiments regarding Lagunitas. Give Super Cluster a try if you haven’t already...

I enjoy some Lagunitas beers but I think they are going downhill as far as quality goes. I was really disappointed in BY this year, we got it about 3 weeks after bottling after getting it within a few days of bottling in prior years. It didn't taste as good as I remember either. Saw a beer called Sparking Swan in 12 packs yesterday, no description of the beer on the box so I had no clue what type of beer it was, poor marketing.

Another thing, they need to use a mm/dd/yy format, the julian code sucks. Yes, I can figure it out but more often than not, I don't bother and I pick up something else.

The Julian codes are horse shit. I agree completely, it’s obviously an intentional tactic otherwise they’d fix it. That said I’ll always have love for lagunitas, no one is perfect!

The coffee barrel aged stout will solely be available in bombers this year. No inexpensive 6-packs this year.

    Cheers!

Agree on this just popping up. It seems to be a similar version of Dark Swan, which my daughters loved. I am going to grab a 12 pack for the holidays, as it seems like a good holiday beer.

I don't really care what the owner is like unless he's doing some really detestable shit. I assume all rich people are assholes until they prove me wrong, I can't base my purchases around that. If they release a beer that grabs my eye, I'll buy it. I don't buy their stuff all the time, but I don't avoid them either. Great values for the most part (except the recent coffee stout bomber only release)

Or in this case, perhaps you don't care what the previous owner or the current owner is like. No matter who owns Lagunitas, people here will forever associate Magee with it.

If people only made purchasing decisions based on how much they personally liked the owner/ceo/former ceo of companies, most of us would be living naked in caves with nothing to eat but some twigs and bugs we foraged. It would take a beer maker personally insulting my grandmother to keep me from buying high quality beer that is affordable.

Ah, goes with the territory, I guess. They still ridicule Eberhard Anheuser for being a "soap & candle dealer" and claim his son-in-law preferred champagne to even beechwood-aged beer named for a Bohemian city's brew (aka “dot schlop”).

The role of insufferable pretentious asshole has already been filled.

However, the role of sanctimonious hypocritical blowhard is still open, if you'd like to audition for that.

But Lagunitas also charges reasonable prices for them. Those other 1000 probably don't.
