I didn't read the whole thread before I posted this, but it's the first one that came to mind when I saw the title of the thread. Yes, it's very sweet. It's also absolutely decadent and delicious. I don't think you can go wrong with this.

    BTW, it's also expensive.

    - This is being over analyzed.
    - You've never met this person.
    - It's one person and you want to make sure they're happy and content with the beer selection (I would absolutely have the same goal.)
    - It's available in your area - Get a Porter or Stout from Samuel Smith and be done with it, or, whoever is inviting this person you don't know, ask them which beer this guest prefers and go with it. If you ask and go with what the guest prefers and there are bottles leftover, send 'em home with them = you're a rock star.
    - Stop by Premier Gourmet and present the same scenario to their beer person for a suggestion, they have a great selection.
    - Most important: "that person" feels welcomed at your family gathering, if not, you can only do so much.
    - You already have enough to concentrate on with cooking a bird and laying out a spread, don't make yourself crazy.

Definitely. I think VaS is a perfect example of a decently sweet beer without being cloying. And it is absolutely delicious

Many beers showing up on the list are beastly. Sam Adams Cream Stout is easy to find. Its a solid representation and easily approachable.

Good point, probably not a great idea to buy a 6 pack of 10%+ beers.

Instead of complaining that my list is "this" or my list is "that", maybe you should give some suggestions.

The guy likes "sweet" and "malty" stouts and porters. That doesn't mean he only likes Milk Stouts. My list has a little bit of everything. Let the OP decide!

As mentioned above, year old CBS definitely fits the bill (assuming you're okay with maple ). Guessing you want to stay away from hoppy or coffee infused stouts, suggest you go to the largest nearby venue near you with that task list.

    Spongecandy Stout by Resurgence Brewing
    Asylum Porter by 42 North

I think both are out right now and are usually pretty easy to find at Wegmans or Consumers.

Best guess I can come up with for Milk/Sweet Stout with no spices/adjuncts would be Lakewood Temptress. If you want spices/adjuncts they have the French Quarter (Chicory Coffee), Mole, Coconut, and Sin Mint (think Thin Mint cookies) versions.

Locally, Iron Monk Milk Stout would be the best option for a Milk/Sweet Stout with no spices/adjuncts.
