Okay, I doubt that anyone here hasn't suffered the indignity of having a favourite brew of theirs being retired aka no longer brewed.

I've been looking for a long time for a Scotch Ale to satisfy my wants since Macandrews Scotch Ale went the way of the dinosaur. I reckon that I finally found a suitable replacement in Renaissance Stonecutter Scotch Ale.

I'm curious as to what you found to replace a no longer brewed favourite of yours.

I hate to rock the boat, but I haven’t seen new Stonecutter in ages.

All I've seen are bottles marked L450. I have no idea what that means chronologically wise but damn it's good.

I'm sure that it will be a short time jumping for joy experience as the supply on the shelf dwindles. And I did say a suitable replacement, not in any way a superior replacement. Or even equal replacement. MacAndrews Scotch Ale is, in my mind, irreplaceable.

I recall Stonecutter tasting like the real deal... but it’s been a long time.

I've never even seen it myself. Where was it, do you recall?

A few from that brewery hit the States years ago. I remember getting some at Whole Foods Brooklyn. Probably gone by now but I have no idea.

I suppose that’s Whole Foods Gowanus, but maybe that’s an indication of how long it’s been. @TongoRad

Hah, yeah, I figured as much. I was more interested in whether it was NYC or Westchester, but either way it seems like it'll be a lucky find at this point.

Green Flash Rayon Vert. Miss that beer more than any. Still looking for a replacement. I am open for suggestions...

Maybe a dumb question but have you tried Backwoods Bastard?

Or even their unaged version, dirty bastard. Idk if it's up to your standards as I don't drink a ton of the style. I have drank a sixer of that though and enjoyed it enough.

Yes I have. My Rdev was a few points below the average but I liked it.

I picked up a sixer recently and I like it more than when I first tried it but again, I am tough on the style, if I haven't mentioned it before. I'm finally, though late in the game, appreciating Old Chub, that isn't in nitro form.

MacAndrew's Scotch Ale was one of my all time favorites! I will see if I can this Stonecutter...

    Original Nelson.

Rumor is they are brewing again at the original brewery and would love someone to confirm. A friend drove a case from Alpine to me and it was 7 days old on arrival--that was 5 years ago. Nelson is my ALL TIME favorite.

Nothing compares for me but MBC Dinner hits the spot in a similar way and is almost as hard to get.

It's not an exact replacement, but if I was craving something like that I'd first look towards Anchorage Bitter Monk. It's actually more of a step up, though, in quality as well as price, fwiw.

Founders Dirty Bastard and Oskar Blues Old Chub. The obligatory go-to scotch ales.

Also, now that it's in season, Bell's Christmas Ale is an excellent scotch ale.
