BBA Belgian dark with coffee. Whiner brewery. This is very good. Ropy pour. Nice head retention/lacing. Flavors of slightly tart cherry, plum, berries, peach, pear, red apple, red grape, nutty coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and brown bread; with light notes of pepper, chocolate, cocoa, herbal/grassy hop, and yeast earthiness. A bit too fruity, funky, yeasty, infected feeling aromas; but not overwhelming. Very mild herbal/roasted coffee bitterness; and yeast/oak spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; very creamy/bready malts; slight sticky hops, chalky roast, and oak tannins in the mouthfeel. Slightly increasing lingering bitter/spicy dryness; no cloying. Very smooth, minimal warming 7.5%. Other than the weird infection feeling nose, taste was fine. Well balanced Belgian yeast, fruity/nutty coffee, and malts; with solid Bourbon barrel presence. Got a couple others from them that are both wilds, so maybe some cross contamination here. Nice style example otherwise. 3.78

This is awesome. Great head retention/lacing. Aromas and flavors of huge pumpkin, skin/seeds, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, gingerbread, peppercorn, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread dough/crust, and toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, wood smoke, char, herbal/grassy hop, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal, grassy, roast, char bitterness; and cinnamon/clove spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; very creamy/bready malts; light sticky hops and chalky char/roast in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter/spicy dryness, no cloying, acrid, astringency. Very smooth, mildly increasing warmth of 8.5%. Really impressed! Tons of actual pumpkin fruit presence; awesome balance of rich malts and spices; with restrained fruity yeast and earthy hop balance. Hope this goes to 6 packs next year. 4.1

Pours pinkish gold, two ringers of rocky white head settle to a film. I was expecting more red coloration though I probably should have googled 'pomace' before making that assumption. Nice color nonetheless.
Smells of white wine, green apple, light orange and lemon notes, funk. Theres alot going on here but it doesn't feel muddy.
Taste is green apple, lemon, berries and grass towards the end. Getting some white wine notes but not much that reminds me of malbec. Tart and bitter are balanced nicely. The funk feels more towards the middle of my palate and blends well with the other notes.
Lively mouthfeel at first, dry finish overall though a few sweet notes linger. The mouthfeel grows considerably softer as the glass sits for a few minutes.
As a whole, I quite like this beer. The wine notes complement and round out the wild ale characteristics. I'm a huge fan of this twist on the style and this beer did not disappoint. Thank you again, Kestrel! You've given me the opportunity to try many interesting beers.

A BA in Philly thought very highly of this, so I picked up a four pack.

    A- a dark mahogany

S- peat, smoke, caramel, candied stone fruits, and more peat. Like a good scotch sitting on the rocks for a few minutes

T- The Taste, follows the nose. Lots of beautiful peat, smoke, caramel, and lingering dark stone fruit

M- beautiful thick and busty body like an Scottish woman

O- a beautiful big Scotch ale. I put it a little bit ahead of Real Ale Real Heavy on pure indulgence. Dangerously drinkable

Poured into a plastic beer receptacle because I'm taking it with me when I walk the dog on this beautiful chilly evening.

This sounds somewhat familiar. That “sandy” descriptor I might want to think about next time I have an average NE “debatably Indian” pale ale.

    Good evening, NBS -

I'm just now settling down after a very long weekend of travel and stress. I flew home from a week in south Florida yesterday afternoon, then drove a little over an hour home - arrived at my house a bit fried and exhausted. It seems I picked up a cold on the plane, which is truly a bummer - as if coming home to the Minnesota cold wasn't bad enough! Also, some bad news accompanied my arrival - it seems my uncle had a heart attack in October (he didn't talk to anyone in my immediate family about it), and, likely due to his new medications, he had a seizure last night. He collapsed in my cousin's kitchen and badly split his head open.

He's fine and recovering now, but talk about shocking. Anyway: in accordance with the holiday - I'm thankful that my family (what little family I still have) is healthy enough this holiday season. We're all gainfully employed and feed ourselves, and we're all well-enough off to put plenty of beer in our bellies... sometimes you just have to be happy with the basics. Cheers to that, eh?

I'm going to buck the rules a bit [again] this week (sorry about that) - as I'm not feeling well, I'm not going to review any beers this evening. Instead, after visiting Garagiste last week, I've been lusting after mead. This has been sitting on a shelf in my basement for a bit, and I just so happen to have been learning to truly love red currant (particularly as regards sours)... here we have Red Dress, by Moonlight Meadery.

This isn't exactly on a par with Garagiste (let alone Schramm's), but I've become a bit of a fan - Moonlight distros to my area, making it one of the few accessible meads in the state. Red Dress has a light rubbing alcohol odor and taste to it - the red currant is just a bit tart and fruity, while the mead is richly sweet and syrupy. While I'm enjoying it, I have to acknowledge the fact that it's not a very good mead. That poorly blended, cheap alcohol taste is execrably bad. While I enjoy the tartness, it accents that cheap taste to an even worse degree.

I was craving mead though, so whatever - I'll live, and I'll end my post here.

I hope you all had a lovely holiday with your families and loved ones - happy belated Thanksgiving to you, and best wishes for the upcoming week. Cheers, NBS friends!

    Quad barrel Baptist by epic.

This beer is heavily effected by the almond added this year. Last year the beer was dominated by coconut and rum in both smell and taste. This year it is much more balanced and complex. The almond brings out the coconut meat flavor of the coconut. The cocoa and coffee mingle with all the other ingredients. All the flavors of each additive and barrels shine through equally. I wish I grabbed two bottles.

Picked up some Bourboun county including the vanilla and coffee barley wine variants on Firday that I am excited to try, but I'll save those for another night. Two new beers for me tonight.

Lunch Pale Ale from Glasstown Brewing
    [IMG]
16 oz can poured into a tulip glass.
L: Hazy golden color with a finger of head and some nice lacing.
    S: Pine, grassy and floral
T: Mostly citrius with mild bitterness. Nice, clean finish.
    F: Medium body and carbonation
O: Enjoyable pale ale with tons of flavor that doesn't overwhelm with the hops or malt. 3.87/5

Final new beer of the day, Kane's Fallen Saints, an "imperial autumn ale" brewed with sweet potatos, butternut squash, sugar pumpkins conditioned on vanilla, cinnamon, and spices aged in a bourbon barrel.

750ml bottle, 2018 Vintage poured into a kane tulip.
L: Copper color with a small amount of head that leaves minimal lacing.
S: Pumpkin, squash, sweet potatos with hints of vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, maple, bourbon. Really smells like sweet potato or pumpkin pie.
T: Very similar to the nose. My first sip was straight out of the fridge and it was extremely sweet, but it improves immensely amd mellows out as it warms.
F: Full body with light carbocation
O: A unique beer that really shines as it warms. Lots of fall flavors and the bourbon barrel is a nice addition.
    4.46/5.

    Have a good night BA

They were compelled to rename this beer ‘Jam up the Mash’ back in August due to another brewer already using the former name. I think the two listings have already been combined, but because cans with the old name are still kicking around, a new entry gets created every now and again.

I’m always surprised to see just how widespread their distribution is. Did you buy this in Georgia?

Greetings New Beer whatever it's called these days? It seems the thread is in the midst of change/debate once again by reading the early posts. I'm more old school myself in regards to this thread, but like the old LNBA morphed into WBAYDN, to whatever it has become now, I realize that everything changes. Sounds like a plan and I too will change how I use this page to review/share a new beer and make use of my leisure time.

    Enjoy the photo.....:stuck_out_tongue:

A note on the entry where you put your review and you saying "Am assuming this is the same as Sonnenaufgang" -
Foreign Objects has a series of these beers and they put "Ungespundet Keller Pilsner" on all of them... so it probably makes sense for you to report it and have the name changed to Sonnenaufgang instead (and check to see if the ABV is a match). That entry has Ungespundet spelled wrong anyway.

Good evening, all, and thanks @lordofthewiens for the start this morning. I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving weekend as much as I did. It’s always nice to have a few extra days off of work, especially when they’re spent mostly eating good food and drinking good beer.

Anyway, my first new beer tonight is Bakery: Coconut Macaroons from The Bruery-

I don’t usually go for beers like this because a lot of the time I find them too sweet and sometimes artificially so. However, I saw a review of this one that made it sound appealing, so I picked one up. I’m glad I did.

    4.41/5 rDev +5.5%
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

    Canned 10/25/18, Reviewed 11/25/18

Poured from the can into a tulip after sitting for about 20 minutes out of the fridge.

Look- pours ruby-hued dark brown and appears black in the glass; tall light brown frothy head dissipates slowly leaving islands of foam; sporadic lines of lacing

Smell- Chocolate, toffee, toasted coconut and caramel, all pretty much in equal measure; bourbon mild at first but becomes more noticeable as the beer warms

Taste- starts off with bittersweet chocolate which is quickly followed by toffee, coconut and vanilla. Like the nose, none dominate, and they all come together really nicely to make a nice complete whole, if that makes sense. And again like the nose, bourbon is fairly mild at first but becomes more pronounced as the beer warms, but it never becomes distracting. The beer is sweet, but not in a cloying or artificial way, and there's some balance to the sweetness to from a mild roasty bitterness as well as the bourbon heat.

Feel- full bodied, creamy and lush without being syrupy; carbonation is on the lower side, which seems appropriate for this beer; The finish is sweet with a little vanilla and bitterness lingering for a bit

Overall- This is an outstanding pastry stout that does a really good job of combining the various flavors/aromas to make a nice, cohesive whole. That, and the excellent mouthfeel make this one a real standout to me.

One more also from Ohio as I root on my Packers on SNF, always nice to know you’re opening something good after a bit of a disappointment earlier. Funny the label says to refrigerate even though this is one made to age which I did, just at cellar temp.
2017 edition poured from a 22oz bottle into a snifter
    A: Pitch black, thin head
S: Cocoa, coffee, vanilla, caramel, bourbon
T: Brownie, vanilla, bourbon, not quite as complex as the nose but plenty tasty
    M: Full-bodied, smooth
O: Very good barred aged stout as is to be expected from Hoppin’ Frog just not quite the best I’ve had from them

While I stand by my last sentence, my 4.3 is above average overall. A nice beer from a brewery I’ve enjoyed a lot in the past and haven’t been keeping up with enough.
    Cheers!
