So Beermenus has listed Zombie Dust as being available on tap in a select few places in my area. I have never had it and know of it only through its mythical reputation. Being very busy these days and the father of a toddler, my ability to go out at nights is extremely limited. Wednesday night I had the rare opportunity to go out. My choice was to go hunt down that Zombie Dust or visit my friend’s brewery and tap room and participate in the jam session (I’m a musician) Knowing that I had to drive my family a long distance the next morning to get to our thanksgiving getaway, it was realistic for me to choose only one. I chose to hang out with my friends. I don’t regret it in that I got to drink tasty local brews and hang with good musicians. Did I make a mistake assuming I missed my Zombie Dust opportunity for good? Anyone else have a story of passing up a hard to find beer?

It's just beer. Sounds like you made the right choice. I'm sure the opportunity will come around again.

Thanks. Perhaps it won’t though. Nevertheless, as much as I love beer, I will never stand in line for hours, chase trucks and/or pay a king’s ransom for beer. If I luck into it (like I did with Maine Dinner the other day) great. If not...oh well. I’ve accepted a long time ago that some stuff I’ll never get to.

Maybe along the same lines... I used to always purchase as much as I was allowed to, or always filling out my allotment; ie: if there is a limit of X amount of beers/bottles I would fulfill the allotment.

This past Friday I only bought 6 bottles of BCBS plus variants when there was no limit as my local store got 200+ cases of BCBS. I was proud of myself.

Zombie Dust is a very good beer, but you made the right choice. Don't let beer run your life.

I always need to "get over" cult beers, getting them out of my system. Subconsciously, I want the cult BA stouts that I think/hear are hard to get. But once I am able to get them very easily, I don't usually feel the need to chase them any more. In 2017, it was KBS, BA Fidy, and BCBS regular. I overbought on those three, and no longer have an appetite for chasing them. I did chase BCBS variants this year because we finally got them here, and probably will chase them annually since the flavors change. That's no accident on their part.

    It’s just beer.

I would much rather hang with friends and drink whatever is around. I don’t chase beer in any way. Never worth it. Friends are always worth it.

    Enjoy

ZD is very good, but, it's also fairly easy to obtain. You should be able to set up a $4$ trade pretty easy. Either way, it ain't worth stressing about.

I would take drinking coors with my buddies over drinking some highly acclaimed beer solo any day. Most likely the local beer was as good or close to zombie dust anyway.

I agree. What's better, drinking a highly acclaimed beer alone, or beer with your friends?

I skipped an annual local stout release this past week to spend time with friends while they were in town. I don't regret a thing.

Sounds to me like the OP has it right. What's better than jamming and enjoying tunes, friends, and local brews? You also can't go broke buying beer when you have a family to support. Seems like the right approach and perspective all the way 'round to me.

I don't do the bar thing much, but I'd have packed up my horns and made the same choice. I've passed on brewery visits that I've really wanted to make because of circumstances and different situations. When I was new to the sport, I walked by Bourbon County variants and and many other beers with great reputations and never gave them a second look not knowing what they were, more than just a bit shocked at the sticker prices.

The great thing about beer is somebody always makes more, sometimes they even make it "better". FOMO (fear of missing out) is an evil thing. Good call, @Gajo74

We retired and moved away from my band mates a few years ago and I miss hanging out and playing with them...you made a good, imo, decision. And, I think it far more fun to “luck into” a highly acclaimed beer, than trading or chasing one down...cheers and enjoy your beer journey!

As many have already said, the beer that you are drinking is FAR less important than who you are drinking it with.

You're missing out on thousands of very popular and well-rated beers every single day. You shouldn't think twice about it. The point of being educated about beer is to be able to select the beer that you will probably enjoy the most in any given setting. It is decidedly not about hunting down every hypetrain beer that happens to be in your general vicinity.

Have to agree with the consensus here. I was in a funk where I'd accumulated a bunch of IPAs and stouts that aren't easy to get in NY. It was gradual, but I found myself in a spot where I was just drinking in my apartment by myself because, in the immediate moment, I preferred just relaxing with my on-hand stuff and watching Netflix rather than trying to cultivate new friendships/relationships in a new city. That contributed to a pretty low point in my life and took a while to break free from.

We're a social species and beer is meant to be, above all, a complement to socializing. You made, far and away, the right choice.

psshh little corner stores in DC got 200cs BCBS plus varients. Thought everything was bigger in Texas?

Of course drinking with friends is the better choice. But I have passed up some gems based on price and style of beer.
