I'm pretty new to BA and am interested in identifying what Michigan beers are most sought after. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Hopefully this is a good way to ask.

I'd like to eventually trade for some Heady, but in general, what is in demand? What Michigan beers have you successfully traded? Founders, Bell's, and Shorts distribute quite a bit outside of Michigan I understand, so those big dogs seem less likely. Is M-43/Boss Tweed at the top? I assumed CBS/KBS would be up there when I first joined, but it seems not so much after cruising the forums. I have my Michigan favorites, like The Oracle and DRIPA, but I don't think they carry trade hype. Please correct me if I'm wrong! Thanks for your insight/opinions!

Yes, CBS and KBS are too widely distributed.
The best trade value is probably some of Schramm's meads.
Transient's BA stouts are also sought after.
Heady should not be that difficult to get

Brewery only releases are your best bet.

You pretty much nailed it - a lot of our best beers are too widely distributed to be sought after.

The ones already listed here are probably some of your best bets, especially Schramm's, and I would add some of the Witch's Hat Night Fury variants, and possibly some HOMES, Speciation, Kuhnhenn, and Dark Horse brewery-only stuff.

That said, Heady isn't too hard to get these days, you might be able to get it with a variety of good MI-only shelf stuff (i.e., Old Nation) if you're willing to go over $4$ a bit.

I think @westlaunboy nailed it. All the same examples I was going to name.

Old Nation is getting distribution in parts of New England now.

    Speciation should trade quite well.

If your looking for Heady you should be able to offer some Old Nation to get some.

I'm not a trader to know for sure, but your trading life might be as simple as some Two Hearted to BA members where Bell's doesn't yet distribute, such as northern California, Oregon or Washington.

I've had pretty good luck with all the Old Nation brews. Sooner or later I think they will start going wider with their distro. Untill then I'll keep sending em. Also everybody likes No Rules.... Or like stated earlier brewry only realeases. Had a few ppl looking for Kuhnhenn's Eisbock but since it was bumped of the 250 list havent heard anything since. Good luck and best bet throw some trade ideas out there.

@drunkenmess Thanks for the advice. How old are the cans you're trading of Old Nation IPAs? I know Boss Tweed doesn't have much of a shelf life, from experience, but a month old doesn't seem that bad to me. I'm possibly just a beer philistine though. Wondering if I just have way too low of standards when it comes to fresh hops.

In my experience, like many of the hazy NE IPAs I don't think the Old Nation cans really shine until about 2-3 weeks after canning.

I've had them two - three months out and they were still fantastic, if kept refrigerated.

I think both Trillium and Treehouse have come out and said that their beers were best at least 2 weeks after canning and I've had a similar experience with Old Nation cans as well.

Don't let the freshness police scare you, unless we're talking about more traditional IPAs. They dry hop the shit out of those hazy ones and you can tell the difference with some age.

I've found that Tweed has held up nicely with almost 2 months on it. After (imo) starts to falls off. Feel its sweet spot is a month old. As for M43 almost 3 months (again imo) sometimes their too green as the brewer puts it. Also found that it has different flavor profile during each different month. Like mine with 2 months on it. Yet anything after that seems to go down hill.
Cart Horse on the other hand like a month...for some reason none of what I had tasted decent after that.
