The power of BBT b2 overwhelms the Deference Effect.

*tin foil hat* completely different circumstance. All Sp members got a Zwanze ticket. That was a huge selection of the people that went I seem to recall seeing. If you assume those that hype the beer are only 1/2 of the rest of the people, that's still a pretty small group.

Honestly, what I was talking about is that with only 467 people having rated it, it makes little sense that the beer is "underrated." It is probably overrated though, and as more people try it, it isn't likely to fall by 0.05 to 0.10, making it that much closer to B1.

    That was really my point.

I am right there with you on '15 Maman. Could be b/c it was Cory's last year making it? Maman is still great, but it doesn't have the thick fudge that '15 had.

Had Maman 17 on Friday night at Perennial, then went over and had BBT2 and anabasis, had D9 and bbt2 again on Saturday with a group of 4 people, and all 4 thought Maman 17 was the best beer of the weekend.

Maman for me has always been forgettable. It's not a bad beer by any means but I'll never understand all the hype around it. BBT was my favorite of the weekend. Had D9 fresh but missed out this past weekend. Wonder if the cinnamon has faded at all? Was a little intense fresh, like this years Chemtrail. A little restraint goes a long way.

No offense but I don't understand Maman being forgettable and BBT being a favorite. Think they're more comparable than not, and I'm not coming from a place of loving either.

Maybe it has to do with Maman being Rye and BBT being Bourbon?

Ya I saw your BBT review Sabtos, looked more like a review for a PBR. 3.5? Ouch! "Thin mouthfeel" also.. If you think BBT is thin, you must like a milkshake instead of beer. Maman and BBT are some of the bigger beers I've had in the mouthfeel dep't. To each their own I guess..

the “hype” around it is that it’s the best non-adjunct BA stout around!

Maman and BBT may be big beers, particularly in alcoholic strength and other factors, but neither has a substantial mouthfeel. I really don't understand people that say those beers are thick or full in mouthfeel, the booze is too harsh and cuts right through it. I've had plenty of thicker beers with no or minimal added flavorings, even by Perennial (BA Sump...explain that to me).

If you want to get a sense of what beers I like, instead of attempting to label me as someone who only likes milkshakes, lmfao, since you want to discuss my review here openly, then my reviews are pretty open for your review as well.

I think BBT is insanely over hyped but that's how STL rolls. At least b1 was not as impressive as others made it out to be, but I can't imagine b2 being that drastically different, even if it actually is better.

Also, if you think a 3.5 is a bad rating, you're what's wrong with beer reviews. A BA Stout is still supposed to taste like stout primarily, not a shot of bourbon with a touch of stout in it. Rating to style 3.5 is pretty high compared to a lot of other attempts at it. But Maman is a more complex and respectable approach--more balanced but still pretty heavy on the booze with a bit more heft in body, but not close to "thick." For the record, I had a Columbus Steel Dawn right next to the Maman, and it was an extremely comparable, if not near identical experience and no one has ever or will ever hype up Steel Dawn like STL does their beers.

IM-(non-hyped impaired)-O, BBT is heavy handed and overwrought, spending way to much time in barrels without enough nuance. Maybe b1 was victim to not having variety to blend, no idea, but I imagine the blending process was more successful with b2.

And there are instances where BA Sump actually got too thick...I'm talking glopping out of the bottle getting stuck and needing to be returned to Perennial. I believe this was a small but known occurrence and only happened with BA Sump. Shows how drastically things even with the same base can differ.

This has been known to occur with aged BCBS. Not seen it elsewhere. Wonder what causes this.

I've never experienced aged BCBS "glopping" out of the bottle and getting stuck. I've never heard of it either. I'm not saying it isn't true, but I've drank a lot of aged BCBS and so have friends, and I had never heard of this. Is it really a "thing"?

I've actually never seen that with any beer. For something to come out as "glop" and being stuck in the bottle (like ketchup???), it would have to be crazy thick.

It is indeed surreal, especially when it's a relatively fresh bottle that hasn't really experienced extreme conditions.

Happened to me with a 2011 BCBS consumed several months back. Spoke to several people that have had BCBS at 7-13 years old, and have experienced something similar.

I would assume @Sabtos knew this. And I completely understand about what he means on "the booze cutting right through it"
While I've not had either of these beers, the problem he is describing is one that I have with Black Tuesday beers & the variants. It does almost seem to make them thinner if it's too much.
