I'll be traveling to Sheffield for work in a few weeks. I would greatly appreciate your recommendations for pubs and restaurants that I should be sure to visit. I'll be there during weekdays only. I would prefer places that are within walking distance of the City Center. I am staying near the Sheffield Town Hall.

    Thanks in advance.

Ooh, lucky you, classic pub town.

Obvious shouts would include the Sheffield Tap (at the station), the Fat Cat, the Devonshire Cat, the Rutland Arms and the Kelham Island Tavern. It's also worth downloading CAMRA's Good Beer Guide app - that should point you to a good selection of places with decent (and, importantly, well kept) ales.

Have fun, let us know how you get on.

yep, definitely the tap at the train station. Near where youre staying (st pauls mercure im guessing?) there's a decent little sam smiths pub the brown bear, a short walk away are the rutland, the bath hotel and the red deer. definitely consider hopping on a tram for the 10 min ride down to shalesmoor (kelham island) where you'll find the fat cat, kelham island tavern, shakespeare, harlequin etc. I live in sheffield so drop me a message if you need any further advice

City Hall is only about a ten minute walk to Kelham Island. If you want a really good range of modern craft, you will find what you are after at both Shakespeare's and The Bar Stewards (bottle shop/micro pub), which is just across the road. Kelham's other pubs like the Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern are a little more traditional, but you are bound to find something tasty to drink. A short stroll towards the Neepsend area, and you can check out community-owned Gardener's Rest, and the newly opened Cutlery Works (massive foodhall) next door. They've got a good craft beer bar upstairs there. Oh, and don't forget the Wellington next to the Shalesmoor/Kelham tram stop. Lots of excellent Neepsend Brewery offerings on cask and keg. We are truly spoiled for choice in this city! Enjoy.

Hi mate. There is now a Tram-Train system connecting backwater Sheffield to super-metropolis Rotherham. You can catch it from outside Sheffield 'Cathedral' and it only costs £2.50. From Rotherham Central station, there is a wealth of 'real ale' pubs including The Bridge, The Rhinoceros, The Cutlers Arms, The New York Tavern (both of which serve Rotherham's Chantry Brewery's superlative range of ales) and The Bluecoat. The cultural dialogue in these establishments during working weekdays is unmatched, but if you fancy a more debonair 'party pub' theme, may I recommend The Plough, The Angel and The New County. Tell them Malt Man sent you, and you won't look back. Naturally, such quality refreshment requires sustenance of equal measure. In this respect, may I recommend Ellies' Special Garlic Bread, still only £2.80. Then a short Fast Fours (01709 444444) taxi ride back to peasantville Sheffield.

A new brewery and taproom is opening in Sheffield very soon by Dann and Martha Holley Paquette, formerly of Pretty Things in Massachusetts. Their new brewery is called St. Mars of the Desert:

Pretty Things was my absolute favorite brewery. I wouldn’t miss it if they have opened when you are there.
