IMO - BeerAdvocates is where the true craft aficionados show up. Lots of old school opinions around here while still embracing new brewing techniques and styles.

Untappd reviews are not as reliable as beer advocate. Reviews are skewed by hype and heavily in favor of NE IPAs and pastry stouts. People rush to be first to check into particular beers and will rate a 4.5 or higher after just a couple sips. Many classic beers on Untappd (such as SN Pale Ale) are disrespected because they are no longer hip.

I use UNTAPPD only as a way to quickly find places on my mobile phone when out of town (and occasionally in town when looking for a specific something on tap). I turn off/ ignore every single other thing on that app.

BA all the way. Like many others, I use UT to track my friends and see what's going on around town. I check in beers randomly about once a week, maybe 1 out of every 9 or 10 beers, as it amuses me.

NBS is a gem in and by itself. Because they're new beers they're leaning to local fresh, perhaps even seasonal beers.

The other thing about Untappd is that every Joe on the street uses it. I've had some REALLY crappy beers and they get a lot of 5's on Untappd and there really is no way in hell they should get those high ratings.

Wasn't going to say anything in this thread since I kept ''liking" what I agreed with what others have already said but one thing I'd like to add is why Beer Advocate is better than Untappd is that though beers aren't usually added right away to this site compared to Untappd is because I often feel Beer Advocates tend to sometimes "wait for it." We're waiting for the brewer to refine his/her recipe to the exact measures that true lovers of beer will thoroughly enjoy. I'd like to think - most of us rate to style and will rate the beer for it's true worth and not rate because we think others are looking - that whole "hey look at me" syndrome (I'm a baller!). Not sure if anyone else is annoyed with the ludicrous amount of friends some people have compared to the lack of check ins, could be just me.

But if anything well, what's that Ovid once said?

Oh yeah, "Patience is a virtue."

I just read the forums here to see what people are bitching about on any given day of the week. I don't use this site for reviews because I don't waste 5 minutes typing it out, when I can accomplish the same thing in half the time (or less) on Untappd. Also, I don't care what anyone else rates a beer because I'm the one drinking it and that is all that matters to me. I feel a problem with both sites is that confirmation bias is very real. People see what others have rated a beer, or what exorbitant amount they paid for it, and will rate it as high or higher to justify themselves.

The Top 250 is so pointless now. Anyone telling me DB Huna is still a top 5 beer in the world? The list is just not relevant at this point. They need to just reset the whole thing at this point. Top 50 has like 8 or more TH IPAs, 3 in the top ten. All do respect to TH, bc I do like me some TH, since their move to Charlton those beers aren't even close to top ten. The last batch of KJ from Charlton was pedestrian. Just seems like the list is very outdated.

I would be embarrassed for writing something like this if I were you. Let me guess, if everyone under the sun used BA you'd have the same argument?

No, because not everybody uses BA and never will. Untappd is a social media platform that my sister's best friend uses to rate her cider and AALs that she gives all 5's too because it looks pretty. Most people on this site are knowledgeable or are trying to get more info on beer. Feel embarassed for me...I sure don't.

I’ve never heard of Untappd. It doesn’t sound too good. However, I do wish it was much, much easier to had photos to beers here.

Well if your here long enough you'll realize there are more than a few impartial reviewers who are really terriffic. But that takes time, to know who's who and what's what, there's more than a few BA guys here I'd trust to the end. There's no instant gratification.

Gonna put my useless 2 cents in.

I use the two for very specific things:

Untappd is GREAT for checking out regularly updated draft lists of verified bars/breweries.

BA is for messing around on forums and checking out the news in the beer world.

Other than that, using Untappd as it’s intended seems like an obsessive, mastubatory instant gratification, dopamine-boost-fueled system of “badges” and stats that takes away from (what should be) the most simple experience that is JUST ENJOYING A BEER AND THE PRESENT MOMENT AROUND YOU. I could rant more, but that’s the crux of it.

I enjoy BA reviews much more since they contain much more content and insight by and large (and I doubt anyone would disagree).

In short, I admire the core of what BA is vs the core of what Untappd is.

What difficulties are you having uploading pics? Getting the right dimensions and byte size take a small effort, but there are sites that can do it for you. I can't speak about uploading from a phone though. Maybe someone else can comment on that, or check out the Help procedures for the site.

I use untappd to check beer menus and restaurants and bars, i have never tagged a beer there and don't really plan to. I will use it to find beers every now and then that haven't been reviewed here. I find the ratings over there really skewed. Granted it gets that way here some times, but I was looking up a brewery in my hometown (just opened, psyched about going next weekend, it is their first) and someone had rated their IPA a 2 and their APA a 2 also, in checking their reviews they had rated Bud and Miller products a 5 across the board. I tend to see more of that over there than over here.

While I love the sweet crispness of apples, the tart juiciness of oranges is quite delicious as well.

I'm not on RateBeer, 'cause it's not objective since the sell-out.
I'm not on UnTappd, 'cause I don't have a smartphone.
I'm on BeerAdvocate, 'cause it gives me almost all info I want/need. On the other hand, I would love to see some more European input here.
