It is the holiday season, and you know what that means: lots of Hallmark movies. My wife is addicted to them and she has several in the DVR, as well as who knows how many that are shown each day. In the interest of science I have viewed a few of them and have come up with the “formula” for a successful Hallmark Christmas movie.

To begin with, there is a woman living in the city (New York and Chicago seem to be favorites) with a high-powered executive job. She usually doesn’t celebrate Christmas, either because she doesn’t believe in it, or because she’s just so darn busy. She is single, with either a steady boyfriend or a fiancé. While our heroine might not know it yet, her boyfriend/fiancé is an asshole. Before Christmas arrives she is asked to go to some northern rural area where there is usually a lot of snow. The trip might be work-related, or she might be heading home to be with the family (usually because mom is laying a guilt trip on her: “Honey, it’s been x number of years since you came home for Christmas.”). When she gets to her destination she meets a guy. This guy could be a stranger, or he could be an old flame from high school and he is always more of a blue-collar worker (but he has a passion for what he does). Their initial scenes together are on the cool, if not frosty, side, but they soon warm to each other and it becomes apparent that these two are meant to be together forever. After ditching the boyfriend/fiancé and clearing up a minor misunderstanding with her intended, true love ensues.

That’s about a two hour movie, with commercials. In a quarter of that time, you could drink a new beer and tell us about it. Tell us how it looks, how it smells, how it tastes, and how it feels in your mouth. Then give your overall impression of that beer.

Happy Movie Watching and Happy Beer Drinking!

I'm sorry to say I love Hallmark Christmas movies. I believe there are five total plots, but you captured the idea perfectly. (You did forget about the girl who meets the prince in disguise and they fall in love.) It makes it impossible to tell if we've seen one by reading the description because they're all the same! We did watch the new one tonight. The girl was from New York in this one. I'm enjoying an FBS and a book right now, so no new beer. But I'll be back tomorrow with a big one. It's been a rough week. I could use some Hallmark joy.

My wife and her friend have a drinking game to go with those movies. For every predictable action (snow ball fight, drinking hot cocoa, etc. Theres a list.) You take a drink. Fun way to watch shitty movies.

I have herd about these guys for some time and finally decide to grab a 4-pack.

They seem to advertise New Age Hoppy American Ales, which for me translates to yet another brewery dedicating themselves to NIPA.

Now how well do they fair compare to the heaver hitters? Truth be told they missed the mark but with an outstanding effort. Back handed compliment, yea I guess it is.

But with so many breweries getting on board with the style, it's becoming hard to stand out, which is what I find I am feeling about this beer.

It's a fine beer don't get me wrong, but it's held back by an astringent peppery note/burn that detracts me from the over all experience, especially since I'm sensitive to it.

    Great beer otherwise!

    Happy NBS!

Interesting idea. Probably won’t be back with a new beer. (Taking a few pills these days that may not play well with alcohol. That’s alright with me though since it fits with habit of taking a few days off from beer every once in a while to give that liver a bit of a break from work. I need that myself, so I suspect does my liver.

    Cheers, all!

    Good morning NBS!

Christmas movies... I do love them until I get tired of them sometimes in January - right after Christmas actually. I’m still waiting for the TV here to air Home Alone which is no doubt a reference in the genre...

I bought an American IPA today, Elvis Juice from Brewdog:

I poured the 330ml bottle at 6,5% pretty aggressively only to get a thin, 1inch head.

    Look: Amber, opaque.

Smells: grapefruit, orange and peach. Lots of fruits in this brew. Taste should be just as interesting.

Taste: the label reads « a cocktail of fruits and flavors ». It’s true. It even pretend to have more fruits than the state of CA. Marketing marketing.

Overall: this is a very good offering and probably the best Brewdog beer I have ever had. Brewdog is a bit controversial in the UK. This American IPA hit the spot and no doubt should be on the shelves in North America too. Buy it safely!

    Cheers!

Good morning New BSers! Today's New Breakfast Beer:

Received from @Bum4ever in NBS BIF #8. Reviewed 12/9/18. Thanks Josh!
“Bottled 19 April 2017” on back label. Cork pulls with a faint “POP” and no overflow. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 54 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
    Appearance – 4.5.
    Body – Deep red, clear.
Head – Large (Maximum 6.2 cm, controlled enter pour), pink, medium density, fizzy, rapidly gone, leaving no ring, no cap, and no lacing.
    Lacing – None.
First pour – Dark pink, clear. Second pour is cloudy as the sediment rises.
Aroma – 4 – Weak cherry, no expected sourness. About half-way through the glass, an oakiness makes itself known.
Flavor – 4.5 - Begins lightly sour with some cherry flavor, a bit of oak tannins. no alcohol (6 % ABV), no diacetyl.
Palate – 3.5 – Thin, watery, soft carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 4.5 – Excellent! The best kriek, lambic, or kriek lambic I’ve had in years! Flavor, nose and appearance are near-perfection for this style of beer – the cherries can be detected as can the oak foeders. Is this the same Kriek Lambic I had in 2007? In those days the (marketing) qualifier “BIO” wasn’t attached to most Euro beers. Is this a “new” beer or merely a marketing relabeling of a previous product.
    Rating 4.28, rDev -1.8%.

Happy New Barrel-Aged Beer Sunday (Week 720)!

I can't contribute much to the Hallmark channel conversation as it is not something that I watch. Most shows that I watch are of the Mystery/Crime/Detective/Police Procedural ilk, those & sports.

I had a remarkably crappy day yesterday as BOTH Pitt basketball teams (Men & Women) lost to WVU in their Backyard Brawl; Wisconsin lost to Marquette, despite being a ranked team; the Penguins fell to Ottawa in OT & I finally gave up. Likewise, I have given up on the NFL since Week 3 of last season & so today is laser-focused on beer!

Last week did not go as swimmingly as I had planned/hoped for. It turned out that many of the beers that I had set aside for the day were not new, just different vintages. :confounded: I then went out and procured some other beers specifically for today, beginning with:

Oh my! What a start to NBS (Week 720)! It was tough to rate, but I kept to Style & not to personal Taste, except for the Overall catch-all score. This is definitely one for sharesies as a full 12 ounces was a bit much. I'll be back later with more … stuff!

Great opening! Hallmark is headquartered here. I'm still trying to get a part as that blue collar worker.

I'm working on some projects right now, but I got review #1500 coming up. The bottle is chilling as I type.

Good Morning NBS....visited Lawson’s new tap room in Waitsfield Friday and brought back a few beers. Have wanted to try this Maple RIS for years; was never in position to buy one when they used to do the very limited bottle releases.

Canned 12/4 and brewed with 2 gallons of maple syrup per barrel...the beer clocks in at 10.1%.

Color is jet black and the beer pours with a small/tight head.

Aroma is nice/pronounced - chocolate/coffee and maybe a hint of maple syrup.

Flavor follows the aroma...but the maple syrup is more noticeable...the beer is sweet and teeters on the edge of cloying but became more enjoyable as it warmed over the hour or so that I drank it.

Overall an excellent RIS and an affordable treat at $18 a four pack compared to bottle releases of similarly sought after big stouts. Doubt this is one that will age well so plan to share over the holidays. Cheers all...

    Hmmm, good.

Any chance you could also put that review into the database? Being selfish, here. I find it easier to look at reviews in the database, than trying to remember 6 mos from now where I saw your thoughts. Thanks!

New Coffee Stout Sunday (Week 720)
Goood Morning from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY to all you flagrantly, fragrantly displaying and relaying deployers and enjoyers of new beers. Chilly, yet dry morning here, but I see that some of y'all are getting what my part of NY is famous for, deep snow mixed with ice. Stay home, stay safe, drink beer is my best advice from experience.

Thanks for the great start Doc. Not particularly fond of Christmas movies, though both my ex-wives and all my children love them. Greatly enjoyed your guide to situations to include in Christmas movies, though.

Recently tried Narragansett's Autocrat coffee stout which I def. enjoyed. For the price I don't think there is a beer out there that satisfies me as well. Really dig the style. Today's new beer is the Coffee Stout from the SN Snowpack variety pack, Bottled 10/26/18

    Live review as I'm sipping.

Light/med. aroma that is coffee and cream meets semi sweet chocolate covered caramel.

Even the taste has the illusion of cream to it, though beer has no lactose or oats noted on label. Pretty simple taste that is clean and a faithful recreation of the flavors in the aroma. Label says roasty notes and fruit. There is chocolate from the roast, no other flavors from it, and fruit flavors are MIA.

Creamy, soft on palate, med. bodied, med. viscosity, lively carbonation, decent finish.

Decent enough beer, but not really doing it for me, though I can't say why since all the flavors are ones I enjoy, and they are presented cleanly. YMMV Will have to revisit before posting a review.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

Well I'm back this week after not contributing last week. (Due to a short beer break that I like taking every now and then)

But I can definitely say that after chiming in for the first time just a few weeks ago, I am thoroughly addicted to NBS and was participating by watching the action last week.

Speaking of Christmas movies my wife and I just took our boys (5 and 3) on a Polar Express themed train ride last week. They loved it.

But today is more of a Charlie Brown type of day and we will be going later to help the in laws cut down their Christmas tree. Not too much snow here right now but it's a blossoming 15 degrees.
(their elf "walking" on the ceiling)

Anyway, I'm going to start the day with a beer called "New Westy" by Bare Hands Brewery out of Granger, Indiana. They took their house IPA (Westy) and added American wheat malt and American oats and then double dry hopped it. It ended up at 7% ABV.
Pouring this beer from a 16 oz. can into a Willi Becher glass this beer pours out like juice being a completely hazed shade of orange and forms a rocky and large two finger width crown. Leaves lacing behind in the glass the whole way through. (4.25)

The smell comes in with grapefruit and orange peel. A rather unique smell, even for a NEipa, because I've never experienced this much "peel" element come through. (3.75)

The taste has a prominent grassy/piney presence once again mixing with orange peel. (3.5)

The mouthfeel is not as soft as most of the style and noticeably more dry. Almost too dry for my liking. It has a bit of an alcohol warmness in there as well and could do down smoother. (3.5)

Overall, this wasn't too bad but it's not something I would call great either. I like some unique elements I found in it but think it could use more balance and less sharpness. (3.5)

I might be back later with another to warm me up after being in the cold! It just depends on how long it takes and if it's not too late.

Cheers my fellow BAs and NBSers! Have a great day.

    Synopsis:
As good as I imagined it would be. The barrel is so well integrated with the other flavors. Tons of dark fruit, and I get a smokiness too that I don’t recall being so prominent in the base beer. Thanks for making this happen Henry!
