    Happy New Chip Sunday

The IPAs in need of a strainer inspired me to go with something even more solid - Guinness flavored potato chips from Burts. The package claims these are seasoned with a “rich blend of Guinness flavors.”

What kind of seasoning creates Guinness flavor? Let’s find out. Comparing the ingredients of these chips to their regular sea salt variety, they’ve added:

yeast extract powder, sugar, buttermilk powder, rice flour, cocoa powder, barley malt extract powder, cream powder, and misc “natural flavors”

Interesting mix of genuine beer ingredients with ingredients associated with beer flavors. I hear that Burts left out the isinglass for the vegans.

These chips have a dirty and burnt appearance. No lacing. Aroma is oil. Tastes like burnt steak ends. Overall: Burts didn't hold back here. Interesting at first but they wear out their welcome pretty quickly.

Have a peculiar one up next - this is the essence of eccentricity, and I'm kind of a fan.

Plan Bee's Pickleback - a wild ale with pickle!

First, my inherent bias - I love pickles. I love picklebacks. I drink pickle juice from the jar. I was, to say the least, prepared for this beer.

On cracking the wax, my kitchen was permeated by the smell of fresh cucumber and light brine - the nose smells quite a lot more savory and sour than the actual taste, which is likely for the best. The beer is surprisingly light, given my expectations based on the nose - it's more of a clean, light, salty pickle gose than anything. I'd expected wild yeast, funk, and lots of sour notes - but that's not exactly so.

Strangely, I think this might actually make a decent palate cleanser between dishes, or even between different cocktails or hard liquors.

I'm a fan. This is quite good. Thank you for this bottle, @akatz821 - cheers, my friend!

Even that is pretty much exclusively due to the fact it is available in the US. There are some killer beers up here that have one or two reviews.:sob:

I am pretty sure there are/were some brewed on the east coast as well.

All their beers have different labels, by which I mean the same beer (even staples) will have different labels. The art is cool as hell usually, but it seems like the marketing equivalent of Russian Roulette to me. I've re-bought a beer I'd already had before (not the end of the world, cause it's a nice beer) on two separate occasions because it looked "new".

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks to @lordoftheweins for today’s introduction. I went to the doctor for the first time in 4 years last week, and I wish I would have done that sooner. I got an SSRI and holy shit do I feel like a different person. I am way calmer and less irritable, and don’t think about suicide every day now so it must be working. As a side result, I also cut down my alcohol consumption by 25% this week; which doesn’t sound like a lot, but it is for me. At times I was just drinking and not actually slowing down and enjoying them, so I am stopping the 2 per post now, and only doing singles. I had 33 bottle returns today, instead of my usual 45-50. Won’t be buying too much other than new beers so I can get some of this back stock sorted out. At least most of it is age-able.

    Also, #7700 was on Friday.

    Beer:

New NEIPA. Very nice. Great head retention/soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big tangerine, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, melon, berries, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation.body; balanced creamy/bready malts and sticky/resinous/rindy hops in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing resin dryness, no hop astringency. Very smooth, not overly aggressive, minimal warming 7.5%. Feels like Simcoe/Amarillo mostly. Very juicy, dank, and earthy balanced hop complexity; nice wheat/oat/malt backbone, minimal residual sweetness from lingering resin dryness. Well made style. 3.9

    Synopsis:
This delivers on the promised tropical flavors/smell, but everything is rather muted. Strikes me as a watered-down ipa served in a college bar. It tastes decent, but not something I’d pay good money for. Thankfully this is quite affordable ($1.50/can).

    Freetail Rye Wit

The concept seems like it could work very well here. Actually, the very first roggenbier I ever tried (it was so long ago that the name escapes me, unfortunately) had a sort of spicy/hefeweizen yeasty quality to it, so you have to figure that the rye will play quite nicely in that kind of environment.

And right off the bat it's smelling like a very tasty wit- sweet spiciness (clove, coriander, allspice) and dried orange peel lead off, but there's also a doughy rustic bread quality underneath it. Maybe there's a little touch of sharp peppercorn in there, too, but just enough to keep it lively. I really like this blend of aromas, because it's both well rounded and tightly knit together.

The palate is a bit more coarse, and dominated by spiciness. Rye announces itself here quite plainly, rather than just the suggestion of it. Still, the 'feel' of the beer is firmly in the witbier camp. Actually, this is what I was initially expecting- a rustic take on the wit; the aroma just happens to exceed it in that regard . The feel is satiny and dry, but could use a touch more oomph, and the finish is long with citrus and gentle spice. What a truly nice brew- thanks again for including it in the trade, Ozzy! A- (4.15).

Good Evening and thanks to @lordofthewiens for the late night start up. I know its been a little controversial but I had my first beer at like 11:45 last night after I got home from Dinner service. Thinking I might give LNNBS a shot some day soon.
I hate to say Im not much of a Christmas guy, especially movies. I was when my kids were younger and when I didnt have to work during the Holidays. That being said I will chain watch A Christmas Story. Love that movie. And Turkey.
Giants had biggest beat down in years - and against the Skins. Party time.
Jacks Abby Eis Maker BBA Lager Wine
Pours a murky brown color with a short lived off white head with no evidence of lacing. Damn ugly.
Aroma is huge. Starts with raisins, plums, fig, black cherry smoke, oak vanillin, and a hint of alcohol from barrel.
Taste follows with lots of dried dark fruits, plums, fermented black cherry, nuttiness, sweet medium roasted malts, booze and caramelized brown sugar and maple syrup.Theres is plenty of barrel booze towards the finish but its not offensive. Make no mistake though this is a BIG beer. Pretty much same characteristics as a barleywine with maybe a tad lighter in body- what youd expect.
Finish is sticky on the lips and very sweet. Body is medium heavy. The sweetness coats the tongue. Carb is low.
Boy does this creep up on you. A few sips in and Im diggin Christmas again. A sipper that will bring any barleywine lover an hour of sheer delight! Might cap this so I can have a few more. Great brew from JAs BBA series again.[IMG]

All in all, a good Vienna lager, hitting the styles notes for maltiness and warmth on the palate. It's not a stunner, but certainly well-made and drinks well.

The looks are probably the real highlight with a rich, copper-hued body and topped with a thick, sticky head. The aroma exudes notes of caramel and crystal malt sweetness with the taste mirroring these qualities. There is a nice bit of bitterness adding to the flavor. Mouthfeel is straightforward, medium-heavy; some residual sugar notes that also add some gentle warmth to the palate.

@zid New Chip Sunday has me rolling :rofl:... excellent stuff. I've had some Guinness-branded frozen apps before (mac'n'cheese bites were way worse than the "Irish nachos," by the way). Next time they come out with a new variety, I'll save it for NBS and post in your honor... :joy:

Alright, here's my actual last NBS entry. I have many more new beers from an extensive haul I picked up in the middle of last week, but they'll have to wait. Over-drinking on Sunday has been an issue for me in the past... might review some this upcoming Friday, split a few with friends on Saturday and maybe have some left over for next Sunday. More likely I'll pick up some more shit during this week, though. So it goes.

ANYWAY, here it is! A new entry into the Kill Your Idles series by Idle Hands... a sour with cranberry and blood orange. Exciting!

Nice color. A deep pinkish-red, almost rose-like hue with a light, pale pink head that settles down quickly to a thin quarter-finger ring in my glass. Each small pour unleashes a rush of carbonation that rebuilds this foam for about a half-second before it fades once again. Seems that the initial pour was the only one that had longish-lasting bubbles. Oh well. Some spotty, indeterminate lace comes up here and there, but I didn't expect much given my experience with previous beers in this series. Indeed, my first KYI was one featuring only blood orange during the summer of 2017. I liked it a lot and felt it set a decent standard for MA-brewed fruited sours, but it still wasn't a great looker... since then, IH has put out versions with tropical fruit, pluot, and more, and I've had the pleasure of enjoying most of them!

The nose is like a fruit smoothie complete with lactose (hence the "made with dairy products" disclaimer on the front of the can)... strong tart cranberry, cherry and raspberry-like notes with bright, bold citrus backing elements. The cranberry definitely seems to overshadow the blood orange here, but that's okay because I find cranberry to be much more seasonally apropos for Winter. Lots of acidity and a slight funk punctuating my first impressions with this one.

Tart and puckering upfront with that interesting rustic cranberry flavor playing heavily on the palate... super dry and surprisingly less lactose-heavy than I assumed. I think KYI: Tropical was the most lactose-forward one, but the fruits present in that one are ones I most associate with sweetness, anyway, so that kinda makes sense. Cranberry juice (especially concentrate) is super tart and dry, almost desiccating on the tongue, so I like that that element kinda translates here. I assume the blood orange was added to provide a bit of balance, therefore. Blood orange is a sweeter, juicier citrus fruit, and that aspect plays big time on the tongue here. The mid palate is very, very juicy, and really has a nice, open and playful drinkability to it. I think without that addition, this would be an uber-tart and hard-to-drink beer. Gotta applaud IH on that decision! Feel is rather coating and medium-bodied... I like the way this one hits the tongue. It has a front-forward carbonation like the Red Berry (which was strawberry/raspberry) version, but it's not as focused on pure sweet fruit... the sourness and acidity is well-placed, in other words. As I mentioned, doesn't hurt that cranberry is already a tart berry, of course. Very good stuff! This series is still too expensive for regular purchasing (I think this ran me close to $6 for a single, but if I had bought it as a 4-pack, it would've been like $18 or so), but it's also very enjoyable and, as I said, kind of sets the standard for innovative fruited sours from MA breweries in a good format.
