My local store does hold beers for certain customers and I am glad they do. It is their way of rewarding a good customer which makes perfect sense to me.

These damned dinosaur references got me (to) thinking. I once not so long ago thought 35 was old. I've lived longer than my Dad did. He had contributing factors going back to his days in The Philippines. Anyway, our family usually lives long and stubbornly. So, if I'm going to be a dinosaur, I choose to be an Ichthyosaurus.

As steep as that sounds that was a real rarity, a bottle you could touch and buy. I'm not saying I would, I most definately would not, but there's thousands out there that would have gladly jumped on that. Secondary markets exist across many markets, not just beer and Bourbon. When demand exceeds availability ....

IMHO this is less and less part of the culture due to increased production and a bit of a dip in hype/ truck chasing. Three years ago I think me and like 8 other guys split up alll of the kbs my place got.. and it’s a big distributor. Now, I can’t think of a release where he needs to hold something for me. He might give me heads up that something is in.. but it’s not held for me. It’s there for the taking.

Live your life and all, but drinking to the point of belligerence before 10am is probably not a great idea.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Loving the drama here. My store holds some bottles for close friends/industry people but every single rare case we get, at least some of the bottles hit the shelf. Usually 4ish or so bottles of a 12 bottle case will be spoken for

Oh I understand. My sister was amazed when she found out the price of a shot of fancy bourbon at her new job ($75) I immediately asked "was it pappy van winkle?". It was indeed (not sure what year). I wouldn't pay that much for a shot of it either. Most people wouldn't taste the difference between it or a different bourbon for around 100 bucks a fifth. I suppose hype tastes delicious, but so would 10-15 bottles of still great bourbon instead.

I'd buy 30 bottles of Knob Creek Small batch, single barrel, at 122 proof, it's dynamite and so very smooth for the muscles it has. I'd love to try 23 Pappy, but unless I hit the lottery it's not happening.

I've honestly never seen anyone complain about so many different things in one thread as this guy, or anyone so belligerent on BA...ever. The funniest thing is the arguing against himself.

"They shouldn't hold beers for losers who post first in a store's social media and sit around and wait for updates all day!!! It should go to people who get to the store first!!!" (presumably by being losers and being the first to see that a beer is available by following the store's social media all day)

Is the answer not just to head straight to the store, check instagram comments right before going in, find the users who requested the hold, and then sidle up and say "hey I'm 69HazeMan420 from instagram - just here to grab the bottles you're holding for me"

My favorite shop posts all special releases and new beers on Facebook and Twitter. Everything is first come first serve (usually with limits), no holds. Some posts are more timely than others. Each store owner/manager can do whatever they want to do and it does not bother me. I am then able to choose which stores to shop.

Do any bottle shops that you all know of take holds but require the holdee to prepay for the bottle they want held?

No, sounds like a way to lose some money unless you know and trust the person behind the counter...
