Was reading an article about happy hours in restaurants/bars and saw a few statistics tossed around that thought would be good for some debate/discussion here on the forum:

    1) 59% of millennials claim that cost outweighs any other factor in making up their minds about a drinking destination

    2) A 2018 Nielsen report found that on average, U.S. bars and restaurants generate 61.5% of their weekly alcohol sales during happy hour

I have some thoughts on these stats, but the one question I'm interested in discussing, is whether slightly cheaper prices offered at Happy Hour actually drive alot more people to stop for alcohol consumption at those timeframes after work/school etc, or people generally are going to stop at that timefame anyway even if costs were at the same price as later on at night or weekends (just because of when they get off work, and when they prefer to have a drink in public...price doesn't factor much).

Happy hours in Casper definitely drive business. Most places here..drinks are half priced.

This is obviously not true for craft beer drinkers, millennials or not.

Since "happy hour" does not have a consistent definition (some places have both an early and a late "happy hour", for example), I'm not sure what an aggregate percentage of this means.

Agreed. The only happy hour I care for is sonic. Half priced cranberry limeades and cheddar poppers work for me. I really don't care how much my beer costs.

I miss a good happy hour. North Carolina laws do not allow them. Alcohol prices must be the same from open to close. The benefit is that some local breweries do $3 pint days (typically Monday), or discounted growler days, and the prices are good for the entire day, so no rushing to the bar at 5 just to catch a deal. Some places do food happy hours though.

Why is there, in practically every state, a knee-jerk reaction to over-regulate alcohol sales?

I can hear the political arguments before this was passed on the evils of happy hours (encourages binge drinking, drunk driving, etc.).

So, since this law has passed, has there been a reduction in DUI in NC?

Weird, in my part of MD, nearly every restaurant/pub offers Happy Hour food and/or drinks of some sort, both chain and privately owned restaurants.

    Seems like ? maybe?

Happy Hour laws came about late 80s and the drinking age was raised to 21 across the country in 1986 (under Sec of Transportation, Liddy Dole of NC).

So in NC, anyway, a clear separation of the two is tough but this table shows less alcohol related fatalities has been a clear trend since the 80s.

none of the good beer bars by me do happy hours, most happy hours have specific happy hour cocktails, discounted well liquors, and discounts on their taps. These places usually have a handfull of the typical brews on tap. so no, happy hour doesn't go into my drinking calculus at all.

I'm starting to become a regular at the new bar in town, and price is the driving factor. Their beer selection is quality, with an occasional rarity popping up. Bonus - they have affordable Old Fashioneds during happy hour too.

Anymore, I find myself there more than my favorite craft beer bar (both are walkable, but in opposite directions). I may not be able to find KBS, Speedway, or some new one-off limited beer at this new bar, but I know I'll be choosing from a fairly large selection of solid, local offerings all for $3.

My favorite craft beer bar's happy hour stinks. It's a $1 off a very limited selection of beers, further putting this new bar's happy hour selection ahead. The craft beer bar does do a lunch special. A full pour of anything on the menu for $4 with a lunch purchase.

I believe Illinois banned "happy hour half price drinks" years ago. That was probably a good thing, kept me out of trouble as a young man.

Illinois hates happiness. They tax you to death and still can't pave the fucking streets. On the subject of happy hour I remember staying at an airbnb near Surly the day before St. Patricks day. Happy hour was more like happy 3 hours and Surly stuff was like $3. I'd be dead if I lived there

You hit the nail on the head. Fallout from DUI arrests and deaths, plus alcohol addiction, are strong deterrents working against anything that promotes binge drinking, particularly away from home (often inducing folks to DUI). Happy hour clearly promotes irresponsible drinking - I can attest to this personally from my college days. Luckily I was always on foot, at least if I could stand.

My colleagues and I do happy hour roughly once a month.

Happy hour prices do drive location selection. Non happy hour pricing pretty much rule a place out. We do spend a lot money, large crowd, ordering drinks, ordering food and often staying beyond happy hour., so this clearly works for the business.

This group covers many generations from mid 20 something to boomers like me, so its not a Millenniums only phenomenon.

And while I clearly like good beer, my snobbish meter is pretty dialed back. Missing a night out with colleagues because they don't choose a craft beer bar, doesn't compute for me. On a side note, most of these places pour something perfectly acceptable for a BA. Maybe its a Southern California thing, but I find most places have a tap or two of something local or a mid tier player, like Stone, Lagunitas, Sierra Nevada, etc.

Bottom line: Happy Hour pricing does drive traffic.

I ran a place that never had any type discount at all. Open at 4 and the place has its cycle of daily patrons that sometimes linger into the later crowd. The beautiful mix of everyone, every day, in this college neighborhood bar is still a wonder to me. The place was busy all on its own.

I remember happy hours in the late 70s where one could go to the ale house and buy $1 drafts from 4-7. Definatly a problem but I was on foot as well so no cop trouble ,,,,,, due to driving.

As far as today goes, I no longer frequent bars of any type.dui laws are strick and the police are looking for impaired driving. It's just not worth it, for me.

In college (70's and 80's), several bars had "double bubble" until one escalated to "triple bubble", and eventually one went with "quadruple bubble". That was essentially a 12-oz or 16-oz beer cup with ice and booze. With "mixed drinks" (mixed with ice) real cheap, few drank beer at happy hour. We could get 25 cent 16-oz taps at the student union happy hour on Friday afternoon/night, and we built pyramids out of the empty cups. No wonder I didn't finish my degree until 10 years later...
