I need some help. The description of Brut IPA appeals to me, but I have not cared for the half dozen I’ve tried. I love dry, crisp IPAs, so I thought this style would work for me. Any suggestions of good ones that may change my mind? Any thoughts on the longevity of the style? Fad or here to stay?

Well, you are much more experienced here than I am. I have had a handful of Brut IPAs and I was not a fan of any of those beers.

“Any suggestions of good ones that may change my mind?”

Needless to say but I am ‘empty’ here.

    Cheers!

Had a Stone: Enjoy By Brut tonight on tap. Not sure if that's a good representation of the style but I definitely won't be going out of my way to try more.

I basically liked 'em. Would have liked them to be more clear, and use a champagne yeast, but, in general, I hope they stick around.

    Yes.

But a poorly done one is really bad.

Had my first tonight actually, didn't like it at all. (Revolution Brut Hero). I'll try more of course, but so far not so good.

Of the 8 I've reviewed at this point, my top 4 rate - 4 Hand's Brut IPA (4.24), Boulevard's Test Brut IPA (4.19), and Maplewood's Mega Dry III: Apricot (4.16), and Stockyard + Cinderblock's Gucci Brut (4.15). Stone's rendition is actually second to last for me (4) with Stillwater's Extra Extra Double Brut IPA being my lowest (3.73).

Maplewood's isn't a strict Brut IPA. It has additional juiceness coming from the apricot, which lingers more than a proper dry brut IPA would, but I still really enjoyed it.

From the one I had (Pipeworks Brutal Doodz), an emphatic no. It had galaxy, simcoe & ekuanot hops. Beautiful hops which were effectively neutered flavor-wise imo. If this is indicative of the style, Brut IPAs are a waste of hops imo.

Full disclosure, most were samples or part of a flight, none of which interested me to order a full pint. I did pick up a single of Pipeworks Brutal Doodz, which I did enjoy, but wouldn’t buy a full 4 pack.

Industrial Arts made one for their second anniversary, called Week 104:

I thought it was excellent, as well as being a textbook example of what I'd expect of the substyle, refined and cleanly defined flavors. I went through a few 4-packs, while giving away a few here and there.

Other versions seem to be all over the map, so I guess this thing is still sorting itself out. I did also enjoy Fair State's Brut Squad, but that was more on its own terms and not really as a Brut IPA- it's a pretty damn aggressive beer overall, with dryness being the only commonality.

Honestly, if you really like a dry, crisp, hop forward beer, you should seek out a good IPL.

Had a few some better than others. Two I acquired from @Harrison8 and I also found Boulevard Test Brut IPA & 4Hands Brut IPA really good compared to others I've had in the style. Both were different in tastes but shared the same style idea. I on the other hand found Stillwater's very tasty.
Won't knock the style so soon but seems to be on the fence with alot of people.

I just had my first Brut ipa courtesy of fair state brewery here in Minneapolis and liked it! It's dry with a ton of hop aromatics. The only part I didn't like is that the finish is almost too clean, like I didn't even drink an IPA. Other than that it's a great contrast to the hazy IPAs everyone and their grandmamas are churning out.

That being said I can see how it can be made poorly just like the hazy or NE IPAs.

It's still spotty but there will be a solid substyle that shakes out at the end of the day. I think the best one I've had might have been from barebottle or 'gimme the brut' from hi wire. I see potential but i don't think it's really been dialed in yet

The one I had, Surly Brut IPA, was OK given that I'm not a fan of IPAs or dry beers.

Im drinking the 2nd anniversary from mile wide in louisville and it's nice. Super clean and dry while having a big fruity aroma and a nice fruity/floral taste

Thanks for the input. Not ready to give up on them yet. It seems the jury is still out as it’s a relatively new style.

No. Not at all. But given the option between it and the current NE stlye, yes. Like choosing being stabbed over poisoned.

I've only had two so far. The first was from Upstate Brewing, (a local-only brewery) and the second is Stone Enjoy 1.01.19 Brut IPA which I'm drinking now.
Thus far I do like them, but not as much as West Coast or New England styles. If you want a beer that's extremely dry they do hit the spot, but I've come to realize that I actually do like a touch of malt sweetness most of the time.
