Alright, so a friend of mine, who seems to frequent this site, recommended I join this site after I told him that I tried and enjoyed Bud Light Platinum. He told me to never drink AB again. He kept saying how bad it was and whatnot, however, he was drunk, and so passionate about hating AB, he wouldn't tell me why they were bad. Now I am curious to find out. (Again, everytime I asked why they were bad, he said "www.beeradvocate.com join".

The obvious answer is that AB beers taste bad. Venture out, and chances are you'll agree.

you can drink a lot of AB beers.

    to name a few:
    BCS
    BCBCS
    BCBBRS
    BCBVS
    GI Christmas Ale
    Green Line

That said, there is nothing wrong with going to a BBQ and having 15 bud lights

I dunno.. you'd have a hard time convincing me any year is a bad one when it comes to BCS variants...

Welcome to BA. If you like it, drink it. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about what beer you prefer. That being said, if you are interested in the vast world of beers and wasting alot of time laughing at grown men bicker about petty shit then this is the place to start.

He made one comment, that sounded more biased than informative. (again he was drunk) "srysly dude youd be lucky if piss was the only thing in ab beer..."

He did mention that I checkout Beer Wars too.

I wouldn't try to convince you which one is bad, I'd be trying to convince you which one what brewed under the all watchful eye of AB..

I like stouts, IPA, DIPA, BSDA, helles, American wheats, pils, dopplebocks, farmhouse saisons, and AAL's. Nothing wrong with Bud (but I like High Life better).

but in all seriousness in this thread, there is no reason to hate AB. They serve a purpose just like Barefoot wine and pop music serves a purpose. it's cheap, is totally palatable by the general public, and gets the job done.

That said, if you have some extra money laying around and have the time to get into a new hobby, beer is a pretty good one.

I don't think the point is that AB is bad, so much as there are many, MANY better choices out there. AB (also known as Anheuser-InBev these days) prizes quantity over quality, whereas many smaller, more passionate breweries are the exact opposite. Think of it like Burger King vs. a really good steakhouse. Both of them make hamburgers, and both of them will be edible, but only one of them takes the time and effort to make their burger a memorable experience.

There's no reason you can't keep drinking BLP, if that's what you like. But give some others a try too; I promise that you will be pleasantly surprised.

The common reaction from those who try some beer other than their usual AB/Coors/Miller/Pabst is "this doesn't taste like beer", when in fact the usual suspects are the ones that do not taste like beer. Many people have been tricked into thinking beer is suppose to taste like corny, bubbly cardboard. It's frustrating...

To take a shot at your initial question, beers such as Bud Light Platinum use a ton of adjuncts (read: corn syrup, corn, rice, etc.) to make the light, water-like, tasteless beer the big boys (AB among them) think most of America wants (it's not, most of America just doesn't know any better. Take a look at styles that Americans have made their own, such as the IPA and the Imperial Stout; Americans usually do them as big and flavorful as they possibly can, in contrast to Bud Light, Miller Lite, etc.). The end result is a beer that is not only just about as tame as soda, but as bad for you, too.

What I would suggest is going back to your friend (or someone you trust not to laugh/belittle you) and telling him that although you enjoy Bud Light Platinum, you would not be averse to trying some of the craft brews that everyone seems to be raving about. Usually this will garner you a few suggestions, which you can use to start finding your own way. Usually people have no problem finding a brew (or several) that will easily make them forget about macros such as Bud Light, even Platinum.

You're professing to like "beer" that was designed for people who don't like the taste of beer. I disagree with your friend. I don't think you'll like craft beer, so stay with what you like and be happy.

Oh I've had craft beer, I just never knew it was called craft beer. I rather enjoy lots of different types of beers. At the moment I am drinking Leinenkugels Creamy Dark. It's a very good beer. As well as some of the others I've had that I'd assume were "craft".
