Finished up packing a shoe box full of beer, and moving on to my first big beer of this New Beer Sunday: Heretic Incubus BBA imperial stout.

Despite being added to the BA database in 2014, this brew only has 38 combined ratings/reviews (prior to mine). This will be my second Heretic brew - a little surprising, given how much I love the name and the themes. My first Heretic brew was reviewed just 5 days ago, and I thought it was very good, if shy of excellence.

This one is not only very good, but truly excellent! I'll let my closing paragraph sum it up:

"This is, in a word, excellent! Big and bold, boozy and sweet, thick and flavorful. Tons of bourbon flavor shows they didn't cut the barrel treatment short; a massive malt body shows they didn't rely on the barrel aging to make a mediocre beer into a good beer. The huge booze presence is a nice reminder that this is a huge beer, not trying to sneak in as a cloying, adjunct-laced approachable mess - in a way, the alcohol heat is analogous to "throwback" IPAs with tons of bittering hops."

Without going into all of the flavors and scents, that summary really does cover it. I'm well above the average here (an average which includes two very questionable perfect 5.0 ratings, especially skewing in such a small sample size of ratings/reviews).

I discovered my love for the Rocky Mountains years ago and spent my free time exploring them from Canada to New Mexico, but Colorado always lured me back. I love seasonal change and it's much more tolerable here with the plentiful sunshine and dryer climate. I'm located in the northern part of Thornton. A half hour to Boulder/Denver, an hour to Rocky Mountain National Park. Everything I enjoy is within reasonable driving distance. Hit me up if you ever return.

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the middle of the holiday weekend. Took a week off reviewing as usual for the time of the year. Get a week off work, visit family etc. Drank down some of the overstock I had, but I am far from complete. Will hopefully get it sorted out in the next month or two. I was originally only having enough to fit in my walk in closet, but now there are stacks in my front room, so I just want to get it down to that level. Made a modest new beer haul this morning. Did not go crazy this time, I have some financial stuff to deal with this next year.

    Beer:

Very good pale lager. Solid head retention/minimal lacing. Aromas and flavors of lemon, cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit malts; with mild herbal, floral, grassy, peppery hops. A bit fruity/yeasty aromas, but not too overwhelming. Very mild herbal, floral, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, light-medium body, and fairly crisp/clean finishing. Bready/grainy malts, and slight sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Slightly increasing lingering bitter dryness, no cloying. Nicely clean on lager flavors, not too fruity/yeasty. Very flavorful/refreshing, 4.8%. Not watery at all. Nicely clean and rich pale malt showcase, with mild Saphir hop presence/balance. Very well made for the style. 3.75

I like that balance of not being too close to the city, but within a driving distance of all the comforts of civilization! Plus, like you said, distinct seasons, but also plenty of sunshine. Do you fish at all? I'd like to be fairly close to somewhere to fish as well - hiking, climbing, and camping are all an easy sell for me, too!

And I definitely will be in touch if I find myself in the area again - would be happy to meet you for a beer!

NBS #2. This is 10416, a DIPA released by Kane Brewing yesterday. This ale is hopped with Citra and "Experimental Hop 10416" grown in Yakima. Until yesterday I had never heard of it. The malt bill includes American Two Row, Oats and Rye. It has a delicate flavor without a lot of bitterness, and a plush, pillowy mouth feel. I enjoyed every sip more than the previous one. Here's my full review:

    4.29/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25

Canned on 12/27/2018; reviewed the day after the can release. Poured into a Kane snulip glass. It pours a hazy, honey-orange with a very large, fluffy, bright white cap and a creamy sheen of lacing inside the glass. The nose features lemon peel, freshly-cut pine, and citrusy floral hops. The taste is really unique. It opens with a dose of sweet malt and oats followed by lemon, grapefruit, tangerine, rye cracker, and pine. There are also subtle tropical fruit notes that I cannot identify specifically. I'm completely unfamiliar with "Experimental Hop 10416" but it is plush and flavorful and only mildly bitter. In fact, I would describe this ale as "delicate." It has a nice full mouth feel with a moderate and pleasant level of carbonation, and the 8% ABV provides substance without overwhelming the delicate flavors. Overall, this is a very good offering and I'm looking forward to learning more about this hop variety.

    Cheers, gang!

Greetings from Nashville, and thanks to @cjgiant for another great start to NBS! 2018 has been a good year for the Buck89 clan; I'm grateful that everyone is healthy and thriving. The year in beer was also outstanding - the three highlights that stand out are (1) surviving my first Dark Lord Day (just barely) and hanging with @mattflippin @Vidblain @FFFjunkie and @Dragginballs76; (2) enjoying a 2011 King Henry with @mattflippin - my highest rated beer ever; and (3) hanging with @cjgiant and his better half during a fun weekend at home. The year in beer also ended well with a holiday trip to SoCal which allowed the lad and me to sneak over to Bottle Logic to enjoy some great stouts. I picked up this nice English Barleywine at a local shop in CA, and it seemed appropriate to crack this one open as we reminisce about that King Henry today.

A nice looking beer with a slightly hazy copper-brown color with a small tan head. It looked viscous on the pour which was a harbinger of things to come. There was a beautifully smooth bourbon and brandy aroma. A second sniff brought sweet caramel, plum, and toffee. Thick and sweet were my instant impressions on the first sip. The barrel notes (brandy and bourbon blend, apparently) were present but they were nicely restrained, supporting the malty notes. Tons of caramel, some burnt toffee, and some faint cherries. The finish was big, warm, and decadent, kind of like sleeping under 3 heavy blankets in the winter. Bitterness was modest, in line with the English BW style. Overall, a bit sweet and heavy, but damn I enjoyed it. Cheers!

Brother Jon, a Belgian blonde ale from Seventh Son Brewing out of Columbus. Poured from fridge temp. Pours a nice clear orange with tan head. Nose if fairly subtle, but picking up nice notes of pine, citrus peel, leather, plum, wheat, bread, and a touch of candy. Taste is really smooth. Slightly bitter upfront, but not overpowering at all. Pine, lemon and grapefruit peel, hops, honey, herbs, and a bit of vanilla. A touch of bread and malts as well. Mouthfeel is medium and a bit dry. Overall, a really nice and refreshing beer. Cheers!

Lost my fantasy football title game last week. Obligatory F you to Aaron Rodgers. Still won a few hundred bucks for second but still... And my girlfriend is so happy fantasy football is over so I'm only kinda halfway following the games today.

Really enjoying this beer, it reminds me a whole lot of Black Note. Lots of marshmallow cream going on. Sweet with loads of bourbon and barrel and surprisingly not too boozy even at its insane 14.8 ABV. Mouthfeel is a touch on the lighter side and I'm loving it today. Went into it hoping it wasn't too motor oil viscous. Damn fine beer.

    Cheers guys!

NBS x2. I decided to bust out some big guns, this being the last NBS of the year and all. As I mentioned before, Hair of the Dog is at the top of the mountain for personal favorite breweries. As I stumbled across this bottle at one of my local watering hole/ delicious food establishment/ bottleshops from 6+ years ago, my heart skipped a beat or ten.

    Hair of the Dog
    Michael (2012)
    - Flanders Red style ale

Clearly a special beer, brewed for the rememberence of a steward of beer appreciation, Michael Jackson:

"Michael is a Flanders Red, made in memory of Michael Jackson. The Beer was Brewed in January of 2007, and aged in American oak and Sherry barrels since then. It is just over 6% alcohol, made with Organic Pilsner, Vienna and Munich malts and fermented with a variety of yeast and bacteria."

Michael is a gorgeous beer. Somewhat still, like many of the knockouts from Hair of the Dog, he is burnt orange in color with perfect clarity. The auburn and maple syrup highlights are stunning and proud, and Michael knows this. The thinnest ring of white foam acts as a gasket around just the perimeter of the glass.

The smell is devine, simple, inviting. Tart yet sweet Rainier Cherries come to mind, along with a slap of aged oak and a smooth touch of caramel.

Cherries once again are front and center. More fruit comes into play with fig and plum. Plenty of oak, even drabs of leather and vanilla like many of the pounds offerings.

The only knock comes right here. This is a bit watery. Flat, as expected, but manages a slick feel in the end. Surprisingly not oxidized, and still very well balanced with an elevated perception of alcohol warmth that soothes the chest.

Beautiful. Intoxicating. Delicious. This lacks some tartness and soft but lively bubbly character, but I believe this would please the late Beer Hunter quite well. And even if that weren't the case, it sure pleases the shit out if me.

After my official review, I gave Michael a rating of 4.07 with an rDev of +8.2%.

    Cheers!

Excellent witbier. Fantastic head retention/thick lacing. Aromas and flavors of lemon, lime, orange, citrus peel/zest, peach, pear, melon, red apple, coriander, peppercorn, clove, mint, and light banana/bubblegum yeast; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough malts; herbal, floral, grassy hop and yeasty eartiness. A bit too fruity/yeasty aromas. Light-moderate herbal, floral, grassy, citrus peel bitterness; peppery yeast spiciness; and slight citrus/wheat tang/tartness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, light-medium body, and moderately crisp/clean finishing. Creamy/bready/grainy wheat, some hop/spice stickiness, and light acid/tang in mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing bitter/spicy/carbonated dryness. No astringency. Very flavorful/refreshing, 5.5%. Was expected more citrus initially; but it is basically perfectly balanced between fruit, spices, Wit yeast, pale/wheat malts, and earthy hops. Very impressive for the style. 4.01

Good evening, NBS friends. This year began with Mrs O, Ranger, and I driving to South Bend from Dallas to begin our second move in a year, and it ends with Little O’s 3rd visit to South Bend for the holidays.

We had a magnificent time with our boy, and made a stop at an Indianapolis brewery to pick up some beers to mule home for our enjoyment. This is Juicy Caboosey from Deviate Brewing, a juicy DIPA.

Hazy mango color with a soapy light tan head, the nose on this is incredible - as soon as I opened the growler, bright citrus aromas literally erupt from the bottle, with heaping helpings of mango and pineapple most prominent.

The mango and pineapple flavors pull the dank blanket up to their ears, snuggling in for a nice, flavorful ride on this flavor bomb. Based on the couple of data points I have, Deviate is doing some cool stuff.

Totally lost track that today is Sunday. I have plenty of new stuff I could dive into, but I've opted for this.

    Carton's 077XX.

Pours a translucent orange that looks fiery and sharp like a DragonBall. Translucency drops to a light fog when the final ounces are poured into the glass. Head is two fingers of pillowy off-white foam that retains well, leaving behind a few strings of lacing. Aroma is orange, tangerine, and papaya with dry nutty, biscuity malts. Flavor profile is papaya, tangerine, mango, and orange with a light zest from lemon and orange. Nutty malts are abundant, with a dry taste, almost like a big scoop of peanut butter with no glass of water. Biscuity, toasty malts add a little extra firmness for the zesty citrus. Mouth feel is medium in thickness with a lightly grainy, silty texture. Overall, a lovely double IPA. Malts are pronounced, balancing out the zesty, sweet hops well. There is a little hop stickiness that resides on the tongue, with the malts drying out underneath. Lovely beer.

    Score: 4.25 | 4.5 | 4.25 | 4.25 | 4.5 | BA Score: 4.36 | rDev: +2.3%

    Cheers to @TheGent for this.
