Oh, I played that truckstops back when. I always was the the very dapper cougar/leopard/wildcat who was dressed very nicely with a suit and tie.

In the 90's, I was a mid-late 30s guy, driving heavy trucks hither and yon. Sometimes (often), truckstops were just far enough outside of town, that there were no other reasonably available options, when one had to kill a day.

Man, if I had all those quarters back now......

Had a can of Block 15's Cosmic Cold Brew and wasn't too blown away, unfortunately. I had it on tap a few years ago, and I recall it being far more coffee dominant up front. This time it felt a little thin, especially for the 7%+ Abv. May need to try another can.

Also had a bottle of the Black Butte XXX which I loved. Dutched cocoa came through supremely balanced; sweet, chocolate driven, bit of boozy and malt. Great batch.

Had a fun blind tasting over the holiday weekend:

Only I knew the beers (but not the serving glasses), served totally blind to two friends. One of my buddies picked out the KDS almost immediately. Rankings for a friend and I were KDS, MS, Medianoche, and MS, Medianoche, KDS for the third. Nice to see PNW holding its own against at least one uber hyped stout.

I'm just finishing up a Lights Out Stout by Worthy. Solid and enjoyable brew.

I am checking out Wander's Vanilla Emissary BBA Imperial Stout, which is on tap at Orenco.

Key takeaways: Not too sweet. Nice barrel character. Vanilla emerges as the beer warms. I don't like it as much as BA Earlybird, but that's more because I prefer the ingredients in Earlybird, and not because of any problems with Emissary.

TL, DR: Another fine barrel-aged stout from Wander. If you like BA vanilla stouts, vurt sez get you some.

Well, I was borrowing a line from my buddy James. Whenever he finds some music he thinks more people need to know about, he pings me on Facebook and says "Git you sum." And more often than not, I go get me some.

But your point is well taken.

Does anyone remember Urquell Diplomat which was probably a porter at18%. I much enjoyed 1968 to 1970 when in Europe.

No. No, I do not. Pretty sure I've never even heard of it. Would try if available.

What are some regular (not hard to find) 4/6-pack stouts in the PDX area I should pick up? Now that Anchor Christmas Ale is becoming hard to find, I need to stock my fridge with something else. For example, I picked up a 6er of the Bale Breaker Dormancy over the holidays and very much enjoyed that.

18% is kind of abnormal for beer in general. That's Black Tuesday and SA Triple Bock territory.

I do remember a dark lager called Crystal Diplomat, but it was nowhere close to 18%.. More like 4-5%.

I was wondering if @PaulBj might have misremembered the name? I ran a google search of Urquell Diplomat, Diplomat beer, Diplomat porter, Urquell Dark, Urquell strong and Urquell porter and got nothing. The Crystal Diplomat comes up (it's even listed on BA), but as Vurt mentioned, the abv. is listed at 4-5%.

Even if the beer was discontinued some 40 or 50 years ago, you'd think there would still be mention of it in some beer treatise. Yet I can find nothing.

Also, as others have mentioned, 18% abv. is unusually high, especially in a lager. Samichlaus and Urbock 23 (both from Schloss Eggenberg) were always touted as two of the strongest lagers ever made, and the abv. for those two beers is 14% and 8.9% respectively.

Tried that stroopwafel stout from Ruse/Moksa and holy crap... it's a diabeetus bomb. Tasty, but definitely don't need any more than 4oz of that.

I was hoping to get more of a stroopwafel flavor but it's mostly just sweet, though not quite as bad as some of GN's stouts.
