Was just looking up Dark Lord bottles for sale on the second hand market out of curiosity, and what I saw was nuts. People actually listing variants like Marshmallow handjee for $500 a bottle. Part of me still refuses to believe people will actually drop that much cash on one beer. Is this a side effect of hype around certain beers getting out if control, or does highly restricted distribution of sought after beers play more of a part?

First, asking price is not the same thing as selling price.

Second, IMO, both of the factors you mention are part of it; in fact, they are interrelated. Rarity contributes to the hype.

would you rather pay some neckbeard who stands in line and passively reaps these bounties from other's hard work, or pass your money in an equitable transaction directly to those who made the product you are enjoying? I'd hope these kinds of matters would be settled upon principal.

What one would rather do doesn't cover it. Beers such as KBBS are so limited and tightly controlled by the brewery that getting it from the brewery is impossible for most folks. The second-hand market is the only option for some rare beers. Not defending the second-hand market, just saying that's what drives buyers. I'd much rather TG produce enough KBBS that it could be more easily acquired. Or they could just ship me a bottle or two.

This discussion linked below probably contains every opinion or thought on the issues of reselling beer.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/commun...-stance-on-reselling-and-trading-beer.557261/

What if this discussion was not about beer? Do you feel the same way about all products that are resold or just certain ones? If it's the latter you probably have an emotional attachment/bias to beer that non-beer geeks would find strange. Would you like to spend ~$50 on a virtual school skirt to wear on your Player Unknown Battlegrounds game character? Because many people think that's worth while.

#1 There are very few people who are dishing out $500-1000 for these limited release beers.

#2 if you factor in the potential costs of going to these brewrery only releases it might be worth it if you really want the beer. For any TG release flights to MSP/O'Hare+rental car+hotel could easily surpass $500. Versus just paying$300 for assassin... Doesn't seem that bad.

Went to my first DLD last year and got a Marshmallow Handjee as soon as i came out of the receiving area there are people waiting to buy your bottles. A guy saw I had one and offered me $400 for it. I kept it since I am going back this year and we will open it as a group with some other BAs. If you are looking for a bottle of regular let me know I can hook you up with a bottle.

I’ve seen a guy offer $6k for Vanilla Bean Assassin. That was nuts.

My stock answer for these situations is that there’s way too much good beer available these days. Nobody should have to resort to buying anything from a neckbeard!

Wait. That's actual, real-life money, for a fictional skirt, on a video game?

Brains have been replaced by money. But I think that's a very old story.

Yes. It's pretty common now for significant portion of a video game's revenue to come from paid cosmetic items. Heck, Epic Games' Fortnite made $3B profit in 2018 selling virtual cosmetic items. Think about that over your next pint of beer.

Dude, you weren't supposed to tell what I offered you for that bottle.

    :sunglasses:

My buddy and I were in Group E, we got a Cavaleiro Of Varnov and Turtledogg, then met in Minneapolis in October and shared them with our families. The Cavaleiro was more ..... accessible than the Turtledogg, which was REALLY smoky (as in "I can smell the smoke 5 feet away from the bottle" smoky).

And I'd bet you we wouldn't get a $400 offer for those bottles combined - and that's okay, because we wouldn't have sold them anyway, because I'm a beer drinker, not a beer seller.

Unless I somehow came into possession of a 6er of KBBS. The aftermarket for that particular beer is silly, IMHO (if your definition of a 12 oz beer going for $1,000 is silly).

The same holds true: if the money is directly going to the game developers, then it's each individual's decision if it's worth it. But inserting a third party opportunist in the middle with a huge markup is where I draw the line. As was stated later in this thread, there's way too much awesome beer available nearby that'll get my money before an opportunist would.

Leaving aside the larger issues, it does seem especially goofy to covet and spend exorbitant amounts of money on something as silly and low rent as damn marshmallows.

Even the virtual skirt seems high minded in comparison

I felt the same way, my wife got the Cavaleiro when she found out I turned down $400 she was a little mad at first. We still have both bottles we are taking back up this year and will open them at a share with some friends.
