The first New Beer Sunday of the New Year! Has everyone made their New Year’s resolutions? For myself, I don’t make them. I can somewhat see the rationale behind them: it’s a new year and I’m going to make a new me. But, really, does a resolution made on January 1st carry more weight than a resolution made, say, on March 22nd? I don’t think I’d be more likely to quit smoking (disclaimer: I don’t smoke) just because I made that my New Year’s resolution. The other thing I would consider is the success rate of these vows of the New Year. My guess is the resolutions made for the New Year fail more often than resolutions made at other times in the year. People tend to get caught up in the hype, the spur of the moment feeling, of the New Year and resolve to do things that they are not equipped to do. They are not really prepared to cut back/quit smoking/drinking, or exercising more, but, hey, it’s New Year’s and they’ve got to come up with something. Better to have a little more of a plan how to make your resolution, whatever it is, work.

There is one New Year’s resolution that might be a little more achievable, and that is to resolve to drink more new to you beers this year. I want you to resolve to write down how the beer looks, what is the aroma, how does it taste, how does it feel in your mouth, and, finally, what is your overall impression. All this in 150 words or more. And don’t forget a picture. Seems like an easy resolution to keep.

“And now we welcome the new year. Full of things that have never been.”

No resolutions for me this year, got a few things on my want to do list just not sure I want to yet.
In from work and just so happens I'm having a new beer courtesy of @akatz821. It was an ESB that was one of my gateway beers but I don't have them very often anymore. Looking forward to trying this one from Treehouse.

Pours a cloudy dark amber with a finger of off white head.
Smells of caramel malts, bready, a little fruity. I know it sounds odd but I'm definitely getting hints of green apple.
Taste follows with the caramel, bready notes, and getting a bit of toffee as well.
Medium to full body, smooth, and well carbed.
    Overall a quite enjoyable ESB!

    New Beer Sunday: Belgian Saison

Morning’ NBSers with a suggestion for fans of Brett fermented beers and a thinks to @lordofthewiens for his resolute start today. I too am one of those who makes (and breaks) resolutions through out the year. But I do manage to keep some of them (e.g., a bit of ongoing weight loss and strength training).

Today’s weather is expected to be better than yesterday since all we saw around here yesterday was clouds with occasional light rain and drizzle. The temp is again expected to be upper 40s and it will be breezy but we’re also supposed to see the sun again sometime this afternoon.

While waiting for this morning’s version of a hash brown casserole to bake (chorizo, lots of diced green and red peppers, diced onions and lots of colby cheese) there’s time for a new beer.

This morning’s new beer is the St. Bretta Citrus Saison from Crooked Stave. While this beer is listed as a Belgian Saison, seems like the use of Brett fermentation would also qualify it for listing as an American Wild Ale.

As usual my review, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/25191/302836/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors on this beer show some coriander, lemongrass and what seems to bit of clove. There’s also just a hint of funk from the Brett and way in the background there seems to be some grassy/earthy bitterness. Definitely drinkable and enjoyable. I think I’ll go buy another.

    Cheers, all!

Or "American Brett" with the style list change. Shouldn't that be American Brett Beer? The current name sounds more like a yeast type than a beer category.

Happy CAN A New Singlecut Be All The Beer That It Takes To Make Me Happy On A Sunday (Week 724)?!?

I made another recycling run yesterday & my basement is now totally clear of non-craft beer aluminum CANs. Jeff Lebo of York Haven is scheduled to make another of his pick-ups ~ early-April to coincide with his Spring Thaw CANvention in Camp Hill. Aluminum has crept up to $0.30/lb from a low of $0.14/lb a few years ago. My two trips netted me ~ $20.00 which all came from gutter & sidewalk collecting! I encourage everyone to recycle their CANs or to send them to Lebo for his CANlection, but STOP throwing money away!

My uncle dropped me off at the Friendly Greek Bottle Shop (FGBS) afterwards & while browsing, it dawned on me that I have a LOT of CANs from SingleCut Beersmiths in abeyance, to the point that I have lost track as to which ones I have & which ones I should pick up. They are not overly spendy, but I hate duplicating the effort unnecessarily & so I gathered all of them for today's festivities, beginning with:

& with that, I am often running! I am to visit a childhood friend in hospital today as well as calling my Mom-Za in Chico, CA but the bulk of the day will be spent in quiet CANtemplation of what Astoria, Queens and Clifton Park have to offer.

Slightly hazy yellow orange color with very good white cap and lacing.

Aroma of tropical fruits, pineapple and something a bit herbal.

Taste is hop forward with a bent towards the fruit. Again pineapple along with some grapefruit all resting atop a malty base. Malt plays second fiddle here yet maintains a baseline all the way through. Hops build slightly from mid palate to the finish ending on a slightly firm note. I don't really taste herbal but there is something that keeps the hop fruit in check.

Medium full texture with balancing carbonation.

This is a fairly complex IPA that personifies hops while keeping them in check. Well crafted, balanced and tasty.

Good Morning NBS and thanks @lordofthewiens for today's start up, As for resolutions, I am in complete agreement. Any time is a good time to address improvements, or make adjustments. We have for many years on New Years day, written out what the prior years highlights were, then a few goals in a bunch of areas, for the coming year, nothing so serious, but it is fun to look back over the decades.
Todays offering is from Mystic Brewing, Hygge, is this years winter warmer, quite enjoyable, sweet while avoiding all the traps.
    Cheers all

    Hygge

    Mystic Brewery
    Winter Warmer / 8.20% ABV

    3.99/5 rDev +2.3% | Score: 3.9
    look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Poured form a can dated 12/21/2018 into the test glass.
A - Murky red cedar colored, modestly carbonated, with a detailed pour, there is a loose off white froth. Perimeter ring lasts the entire experience.
S - A touch of spice, pepper, nutmeg, Tettnang hops? Toasted grain, earthy. Wet autumn leaves. With an increase in temperature, some raisin and fig, a move toward Abbey style.
T - Complex, earthy grains, touch of booze, cinnamon, fire ball, Black pepper corn, tucked in your cheek.
M - Sweet start, then nice spicy middle with an alcohol release, palate is fully coated, with light dried fruit, A sweep of bitter tries to move things along, to no avail, long sweet linger. with a palate warming kiss of booziness.
O - A very nice warmer, the feel is luxurious and avoids cloying, aromatics are set for winter, the offering certainly delivers on the "Warmer" aspect at 8.2% it delivers in that aspect. I wonder if there is some Abbey Ale baseline in the model. Maybe some candied sugar? Either way very nice.

Good morning NBS & thanks for getting us started @lordofthewiens. My resolution is to buy more 4/6/12 packs and less singles. We'll see how that turns out. Today is the feast of the Epiphany, so I'm having cake for breakfast...

    The review:
12oz canned 12/4/18 (1 month ago) poured into a snifter at fridge temp 8% ABV 26 IBU per label. The beer pours dense medium to dark brown with quickly fading light brown head. The head recedes to a few bubbles and leaves no lacing. The aroma is dark baker's chocolate and vanilla. The flavor is more dark chocolate with the roasty malts, Belgian yeast, coconut and vanilla coming out in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, adequately carbonated and semi dry in the finish. There is enough bitterness to keep this one balanced. There is something in the taste that mimics strong alcohol, but I think it's the combination of Belgian yeast and vanilla. Overall, good. Interesting take on the desert style ale with limited sweetness, but limited input from some of the ingredients.

Cheers all and enjoy the new beer in your glass today!

    The Dude Abides!

You fans of the movie The Big Lebowski will understand today’s lead-in. I am a BIG fan of this movie and I have watched it many times.

Today’s beer is a collaboratively brewed beer – produced at Cape May Brewing but with the help of the folks of Left Hand brewing. The beer is branded as Ties the Room Together which is reference to one of the themes of the movie. On the can this beer is detailed as being a White Cream Stout. You might say: What!?! Yeah, I am not certain what a White Cream Stout is either.

Below is how the Cape May folks describe this beer on their website:

    “Ties the Room Together

    Cream Ale

    ABV8.5%

    IBU18

    SRM4.0

If Gary the bartender had accidentally mixed The Dude’s Caucasian with his oat sodas, this would be the result: a White Russian-inspired cream ale with coffee beans, cocoa nibs, lactose, and vanilla. Like The Dude, Ties the Room Together abides, but that’s just, like, our opinion, man.”

    https://www.capemaybrewery.com/beers/ties-the-room-together/

This beer reads as being a very ‘different’ which is consistent with the themes of the movie since The Big Lebowski is also a ‘different’ sort of film.

Well, as the Dude (who likes to bowl) would say “Strikes and gutters, ups and downs.”

Served in my Nonic Pint glass:

    Appearance:

Golden colored with a slight haze. A white head.

    Aroma:

The nose is vanilla but there is also a dairy sweetness aspect as well.

    Taste:

The predominant flavor is vanilla but there is some cocoa/chocolate in the background. There is also the same dairy sweetness aspect as exists on the nose.

    Mouthfeel:

A creaminess to the mouthfeel with a medium body.

    Overall:

This beer ‘style’ is not exactly in my palate’s sweet spot (pun intended) but I am of the opinion that this beer is well brewed in that it meets the breweries goals with this beer (as I understand it).

Cheers to the folks of Cape May and Left Hand Brewing for this ‘interesting’ beer!

    Wells banana bread beer
    ..orange gold color
..light body and plenty of carbonation
...aroma is banana candy, ripe banana, grain and malt
Taste is definitely banana and mostly tastes real and not artificial. I think the base beer is a sour, bitter mouthful that isn't completely pleasing
..overall it went well with homemade banana bread but probably wont try it again[IMG]
