FWIW ... I won't be trying any Hazy IPAs on this trip. I get enough of it locally and sent to me for media samples. While I lot of it is good from no matter what part of the country it comes from, most of it does not impress me / all starts tasting the same. From the looks of it I don't think I'll have to worry about that though. ;-)

For a distinct style in MN grab a Hammerheart bottle to take home.

Well, alright. Maybe I'll retract my previous statement then.

I never check in my bag, always carry on. Will have to checkout a bottle shop for a hotel room beer.

In that case there are a couple breweries mentioned in this thread you probably will want to skip. I second the Waldmann recommendation. A unique MN establishment that brews really good German style beer.

Skip Indeed. Hit Dangerous Man instead. Go to Surly for the shear scale of it more than anything.

Among the breweries mentioned in this thread, Modist, Barrel Theory, and BlackStack rely on NEIPAs as the primary source of their appeal to users of this site.

Um, don’t forget their fruity sours, and candy stouts!

Modist was showing some different lagers & a German IPA ... that is the draw for me.

Those styles aren't a strength for Modist, even if they have a few on right now. I don't know any fans of German-influenced beers (myself included) who rank Modist particularly high in that realm. "Lagers for people who like NEIPAs" doesn't strike me as a strong selling point. I don't mean to pick excessively on Modist, which probably overall is a slightly above average brewery by Minnesota's all-too-low standards, but I don't think it's a good fit for your tastes or worthy of prioritization on a short visit.

Better options for lagers and German-influenced beers in Minneapolis proper, and not too far from your base of operations, are Utepils (hues traditional) and Bauhaus (hues modern). Both have much better taproom venues to my tastes as well.

Understandable, what's great is that there are several breweries within a stone's throw from Modist ... I don't have a problem doing a one and done anywhere I go if I'm not feeling it.

    Recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Waldmann really is quite unique, especially for the Twin Cities. The history major in me can’t recommend it enough. Good beer, and food, in a legitimate 1850’s St Paul lager house. As an added bonus, Bad Weather Brewing is literal steps from Waldmann, and is a great local taproom. They don’t open until 3 though.

They could schedule it here in time for SurlyFest and Zombie Pub crawl weekend. Wouldn’t that be a treat?
