    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

Yeah, I know this is my second post, but I'm now able to gear up for a new beer, unlike earlier today.

It feels good to be back. I had to skip last week due to a very nasty cold. Feeling so much better now.

Also - re Resilience - Haven't seen it yet, but will be getting some once it shows up.

Now on to the new beer, and, on this one I'm flying blind. This beer comes thanks to @smanson56 . Was planning on doing this last week, but I was in no condition for beer. At least I'm almost fully back, and can enjoy this beer.

Look - Pours pitch black. 1 finger tan head. The retention is ok, but dissipates fairly quickly, and I wonder if this is a higher ABV beer. There was a slight bit of lacing as the head dissipated. I'd wager this is some kind of stout. 4.25

Nose - I'm not getting too much. I think I'm getting some barrel aging notes in the aroma. Maybe some smoke? Malty. 3.75

Taste - Oh, yeah, I'm pretty sure this is a BA beer. I get a lot of those types of notes in the flavor. I get the caramel, vanilla, chocolate. I also think I'm getting a hint of coffee. I'm not getting any smoke, so I think I was wrong about that part of the aroma. 4.25

Feel - Thick, boozy, slight warming, but I can tell this is a higher ABV beer. 4.5

Overall - This is a heavy hitting beer. Thick. Rich. Boozy. I'd assume a BA beer. Enjoying it a lot. 4.25.

I'll be sipping on this for a while, and in a bit, reveal the beer. Based on what I'm tasting so for, I may be one and done. I'll decide after the reveal. All I know is I'm liking this.

My last new beer of the day (my 6th, 5th with a full review shared here - and I promise, yes, it's my last!) is a big one: Evil Twin's Bourbon Maple Barrel-Aged Even More Jesus.

As far as Evil Twin's core stouts go, I lean toward IBB vice Even More Jesus. The Jesus series (sounds like a documentary) leans far closer to bitter and smokey tones, whereas the Breaks are sweeter and thicker.

This one is .... well, in a word, exceptional. On a day/night filled with some fantastic beer, this one is the star.

The nose carries more bourbon than any BBA stout I've reviewed in recent memory. The palate is a blend of bourbon and maple on top of a thick roasted malt base. The second half sees a smoky, salty bacon-like note that carries through to the finish - really, more of a bacon note than many so-called maple bacon stouts.

Remarkably smooth, big and bold; simply, everything you could want in an imperial stout, and with a fairly simple but absolutely delectable profile featuring the bourbon and maple exactly as advertised.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/24300/247786/?ba=Roguer#review
    4.52 / +3.4% (ahhh, the rare +rDev - it does exist!)

It's been a while since I've had a new-to-me BBA imperial stout that doesn't shy away from the bourbon on its sleeve so plainly. It's a wonderful change of pace. Jeppe clearly didn't shy away from maximizing the bourbon presence, and it's a wonderful change of pace. I am loving this!

Cheers NBS friends and family, and good night!

Hopefully you get your power back really soon, man.

Spaten's Franziskaner is another example of how this large-scale brewery - absolutely a macro - can put out quality brews. I love it.

Excellent sour. Great head retention/soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big tart/sour lemon, lime, orange, ginger, citrus peel/zest, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white grape/wine, oak, hay, straw, and grass; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bready malts; lighter notes of peppercorn, leathery/musty/lacto funk, white wine vinegar, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, wine tang, herbal/grassy/zesty bitterness, and peppery yeast/ginger spiciness on the finish. Medium-plus carbonation, medium body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced bready/grainy malt, lactic acid, sticky spice, and wine tang/tannins in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing bitter/spicy/tangy dryness; no pucker/astringency. Very smooth, not overly lactic, minimal warming 7%. Great balance of oranges, ginger, and Brett/Bacteria complexity; great wine barrel presence, and pale/wheat malt backbone against acidity. No complaints. 4

Today we have First To The Top a milk stout with a hint of orange flavor. Unusual but good.

Cool and gray this Sunday, but none of the white stuff in other posts. Brew kettle fired up today for my first outdoor brewing during a winter month. It went pretty well. The kettle heated quickly and the mash maintained conversion temperature on a 34 degree day on the back porch. In the pot was a Bier de Mars for spring. Can't wait!

    Until next time,

    Happy Trails!

New Beer Sunday: American Brut IPA

Evenin’ NBSers with an alert for fans of Sixpoint beers.

Well, given the outcome of the Eagles-Saints game it’s time to take a deep breath, relax and have another new beer and look forward to next year's football season.

This evening’s new beer is the Sixpoint Mimosa Sparkler Bruit IPA. This is both a new beer and a new style for me so I confess my ratings here probably will probably be based as much on enjoyment as on keeping style in mind.

As usual my review, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/10607/380939/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors are full of citric zest and tropical fruits such as pineapple, grapefruit and mango. While the citric bitterness is noticeable it is neither strong nor tongue rasping and so the finish is long, crisp, and dry with only light citric bitterness showing. Nicely drinkable and enjoyable. Time to look for some other examples of a Bruit IPA.

Note: I should say that I did feel sort of obligated to ding the beer on appearance since it is my understanding that most, if not all, Brut IPAs are supposed to be clear and this one looks more like a NEIPA.

Time for some music. On the player tonight is the Bach Brandenburg Concerto No 3.

    Cheers, all

Ok, for the reveal. My original post was #121 in this thread. The beer is:
River Roost Brewery - Rhythm Of The Night.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/44112/382652/

The page doesn't reveal the ABV, but it's got to be up there. As you all can see, I've almost finished it off.

    Ok, a review said it's 11%.

So, yeah, I did correctly guess it is a barrel aged beer. I was thinking rum barrels, but it is rye barrels.

Damn tasty, to say the least, and thanks again @smanson56 for sending this to me. I think this bottle will be going in my bottle collection.

I'll see if I've got another in me in a while.

    Good evening NBS
Worked all day and now settling in for a couple new beers. First up is an English Dark Mild
    [IMG]
    The review:
12oz minicrowler? hand dated 12/12 & 3.8% ABV on label poured into a nonic pint glass at fridge temp. The beer pours bright medium brown in color with ruby and chestnut highlights. The head is a milky tan and recedes to a film and thin ring. Minimal lacing. The aroma is appropriately mild revealing pale and toasted malt and cocoa. The taste is more cocoa with subtle smokey undertones and earthy hops. The bitterness is low, but complementary of the malt. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with just less than medium carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, very good. Thanks to @Harrison8 for the chance to try this.

Thanks for the opening @cjgiant. I checked the SN beerfinder tonight and still no Resilience within driving distance. I suspect it will show up eventually in fine drinking condition. I'm going to grab a bite and then something a little stronger for my closer. Cheers all!

Next up, growler fill from the halfway point of the day:

    Thunder Island
    Easy Climb Golden Ale

As advertised, a clear golden ale. Damn near perfectly clear, but not in fact, perfectly clear. A smooth foamy white head gets comfortable on the surface and likes to leave some remnants on the glass.

Lovely smell to it. Simple and inviting. Crushed grain, cooked rice, freshly baked corn bread. Biscuity in fact, with an easy an unpretentious grassy and peppery hop finish.

This is a beers beer. One you and your dad can agree on. Familiar, yet bold. Sweet corn meal, gritty, and grainy. Hops just to balance with a touch of herbaceousness. Pepper, honey, and a light huckleberry-like taste in the finish.

A touch on the heavier side for the style. Creamy almost, but still very easy to guzzle. A soft carbonation and lack of bitterness only adds to the richness.

Beer. This here is a modern classic of "beer". As I mentioned before, one that'll make dad, hell even grandpa proud to share. Easy, simple, raw. Pull up a chair and bust out the Domino's. Gonna be a good night.

A solid 3.89. No rDev as this was the first review.

Ah what the hell. Couple more gratuitous pics from this weekend:

    Gun Hill Side Squeeze

This is a local collaboration with Monday Night Brewing (a brewery I never heard of). It's a 5.1% ABV "grisette" aged in sauvignon blanc barrels. Color is fresh apricot. Oh boy, this has some serious wood action going on. It teeters back and forth between giving the impression that the brewer doesn't have the experience to rein in the oak to an appropriate level... and that they imparted a nice, interesting (although aggressive) character. Ultimately, I’m going to fall on the side of thumbs up since the brewer is walking a fine line here and ultimately pulls it off. It really helps that the beer is very dry. There’s also a strong lime character and the combination of everything suggests a cocktail inspired beer more than grissette or wine.

Awesome rye IPA. Fantastic head retention/soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berries, citrus peel/zest, wood, light peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate caramel, brown sugar, spicy rye, toasted biscuit, and light nutty/toffee/roasted malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness; and rye spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; balanced creamy/bready malts and sticky hops; some resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing bitter/spicy dryness; no hop astringency. Super smooth, not aggressive, minimal warming 7.4%. Awesome Citra/Chinook profile. Very juicy and fairly dank/earthy hops; great dark/rye/bready malt backbone. Mild residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. Would buy a 6 pack. 4.13

    500 ml. bottle.
Moderate pour yields an almost two inch tan head over a nearly black body with some lacing. Nose of chocolate, caramel, vanilla, and of course, bourbon. Taste mirrors nose wonderfully with a nice feel. The 11.5 % booze is there but not off-putting in any way. Overall, find this! Really, everyone needs to seek this out. Cheers!

Do you think a new entry is appropriate?

It may seem an obvious "yes," but recall that Hoptimum was originally continued under the same entry. I'm not sure what the right answer is (it's obvious on Untapp'd, as they add every single year as a brand new beer for every entry......*sigh*).

With the change in ABV, though, it probably is worth a new entry.

Hi everybody, it's a late one for me today. My son was watching the games at his friend's house and I had to pick him up afterward, so this is my earliest opportunity to get in a beer for today.

Just a couple of days ago I received an incredible box from @FlintB for our Secret Santa BIF. Within it was a large selection of wrapped mystery beers, and even some whiskys. I'll surely be able to have quite a bit of fun with it in the next week or two, but I at least wanted to get to one for today. Yesterday was also a no go, because I was away at my parents' celebrating my dad's birthday, so I think I've been patient enough and deserve a treat .

Here's my random choice for this evening:
I wanted something low-ish in alcohol, and whadaya know, the perfect thing jumped to the head of the line.

First off, it's a beautiful looking beer, with its deep saturated hue just on the chestnut brown side of amber. As to the aroma, it starts off announcing right away that it will be on the sweet side of things. I get a delightful blend of caramel, baked apples, brown sugar, toffee and a touch of spice reminiscent of a fruitcake.

The palate is even better, however, rich and malty; not quite decadent, but it makes up for that with surprising drinkability. Like many great lagers it starts sweet but finishes dry. How am I pegging this as a lager at this point? Well, the dark Munich malt quality dominates the flavor profile- some toffee, some dried figs, but mostly toasted bread with a rounded overall flavor. There's that touch of spice again, with just enough bitterness to keep things in check, and some gentle warming alcohol presence.

This definitely tastes like a doppelbock, a very good doppelbock, made with skill and confidence. A true pleasure to drink; I'm in the A- to A range (4.35) with that assumption in mind.

And here's the reveal, post note-taking and, well, most of the glass:

    Kuhnhenn Winter Wonder Lager

This is actually my first beer from this brewer whom I've heard so many great things about- I'd say we're off to a great start . Thanks again, Brian, this was so up my alley it's not funny, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

    Cheers, all!

Pours a very dark brown. The head is quite thick - 4 finger. It is brownish, and fairly long lasting. Nice lacing on the glass as the head dissipates.
The nose has some chocolate, and a hint of lactose. Not too strong.
Taste - There's some chocolate and lactose in this beer. The chocolate seems reminds me of chocolate syrup that I used as a kid on my ice cream. As a kid I liked it. I'm not too sure as an adult. Some lactose in this beer.
The body is decent. Slight creamy feel from the lactose.
It's an ok beer. It's good, but I think it could be better.

For sure I'm done after this. See you all next Sunday for a lot of new beers consumed.

    The review:
16oz undated can poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 8.1% ABV. The beer pours turbid, but not murky, in a pastel yellow orange tinted color. The head is off white and recedes to a film and fat ring. The aroma is a fruit salad of grapefruit, peach and melon. The taste is juicy, as advertised. Semisweet grapefruit and melon come to mind again with an slight finishing bitterness to cut the sugar. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with adequate carbonation and a bit of a prickly feel. The finish is undry, but not cloying. Overall, very good. Literally tastes like a juice cocktail with just enough bitterness to keep me on board. Thanks for this one @Harrison8.

I've got plenty of new beers but no more energy and a 4am alarm looming. Cheers all & enjoy those new beers.
