Rookie BIF Round 3 Sign-Up Thread

There are cool things about BA (bifs included) but checking in beers here is too much of a pita for me too

 

But, if I post a beer on UT, it may have been a couple ounces at a share, so I don't count that as having "had" the beer. My reviews here are the only ones I count for personal record keeping.

I do have about 400 "hads" here, but that's when I tried to pair my lists from the two sites. Too much hassle.

 

Yep every so often I get ambitious and try to cross check in but it's too much. Wonder what the ba app will do in that regard

 

Perfect. Thank you all for answering my question. I've done my fair share of BIFs in the locals group I just wanted to make sure of the rules so I dont steps on toes here. Considering entering, if I do @Mikexw can vouch for me or I can ship as a newbie doesnt matter to me

 

@MCMASTERSANCHEZ what everyone else said -- it's probably not as much "super local" as our other group got, but I think that was partly because we always wanted new ticks and everyone in there has tried a bazillion beers. I will basically hit my target's wants if I can, otherwise prioritize good local/relatively local stuff (so if I was sending to California, I wouldn't hesitate to include a Pennsylvania beer that doesn't get distro there).

Totally off topic -- I just noticed 18th Street is going to be at Extreme Beer Fest -- definitely one of the booths I'll be visiting.

 

So I realize I'm an extreme case, but...

1 - I check in everything on both here and untappd. And they are pretty close -- I have 2,997 beers on here and 3,469 on untappd, but virtually all of the difference is due to either vintages (so I could have a beer checked in as 5 different vintages on untappd but as only 1 beer on BA), or could be Homebrews or otherwise not listed on BA.

2 - when I get my target, the first thing I do is check wants, and try to come up with a list of prospective beers I might be sending (good stuff I have on hand or can easily get that fit his or her style preferences, for example).

3 - then I try to narrow it down. Which involves seeing if they have ticked each beer yet. On untappd, I usually pull up their uniques and filter by brewery. On BA, if you go to someone's profile, and click on the NUMBER of beers they've rated, you get a full list of everything they've had on here. I typically sort that by brewery (by clicking on "Brewery" where it says "Beer Name | Brewery | Style"), and then just scroll through the list.

4 - If they haven't had that beer yet, it stays on my short list for stuff to send. If they HAVE had the beer, and it's listed as a want, I usually check and see which came first -- if my target drank something last January, and added it as a want 2 days later, I assume he (or she) really liked and wants it again. If they added it as a want last January, then drank it in April, I assume he (or she) doesn't want it anymore but neglected to update their wants. If it's the latter case, and they rated it ridiculously high, I might consider sending it again.

Hopefully that all made sense...

 

As far as Untappd goes - it also plays heavily in to a lot of people's hints and throwing confusing in to a BIF.

Remember that half of the fun of BIFing is guessing who your sender is! If you want to confuse people a bit, add friends to Untappd over the course of the BIF... it almost always makes people wonder whether you're their sender.

Or if you don't care about that, just add everyone before we get started.

Yea @JodiB either ask or usually once it gets rolling someone throws it out there and most people post theirs and everyone requests the people they don't have yet

I just accepted a request from @Snrubnivek , and just requested you. I've found that the easiest way to get everyone is to find somebody who seems active in here and has a moderately sized friend list -- go down the list of names and look for ones that match or are at least close. I think most (but definitely not all) of us have usernames on both sites that are similar.

 

Since I won @Yabey's LIF yesterday, I will put one out as well. This will be open to anyone who signs up for the BIF and I will allow for submissions through when I receive my target. Seeing as how my win was based around an engagement, I'll keep things along the same vein.

Whoever guesses closest to how long my wife and I have been married, in months, as of the start of 2019 will win a box. This will not be Price is Right Rules, so in case of a tie, tell me what city we visited on our honeymoon.
