Ok same story different day right? I shipped a bottle and 4 cans via usps. The package arrived in a plastic bag with all contents secured, nothing broken. However the bottle had leaked, over half of it. I had used zip lock bags for everything however it still leaked outside which is why it arrived with a plastic bag , covering the whole box. Nothing else had leaked and the cans were ok (I did insure the package however) So I have dealt with slight leakaged but never half a bottle. What's the right thing to do? Send him another bottle, which I have , send back traders bottle , or send back money? This was done outside of BA btw, but not that it should make a difference. The bottle wasn't broken or have any cracks and the box looked in decent condition despite the leak.
Any of those would be good options, on you to make it right. Work with your trading partner and see what they prefer.
They would prefer I either send another bottle, send back the original bottle I traded for or try to work something out in the future.
It was not, but I used to do it before. I know there's a post discussing this and there's a special tape for this but who really knows. I mean half the bottle leaked but the cap was still secured tightly. Strangest thing ever. I wonder if it had been secured with tape would it have created more pressure thus causing it brake instead.
That thread has some strong opinions on both sides. Personally I've never experienced a leaky bottle that was taped. Either way, good on you for working with your trade partner to make it right
My two cents....... since you have one, send him another bottle on your next trade (looks like it was trending that way anyway). When you trade often enough things can happen. I agree that it sounds like you have a pretty good trade partner there. Keep the solid relationship and your trade partner will take care of you.
Where were you sending? East coast has been hit with insane frigid cold that could impact beers. Same thing with extreme heat on certain types of beer like lambics.
I'm starting to think this is what might have happened. I've been responding to another post about being to cold to ship. I sent from San Francisco to Grand junction Co. and this happened to take 3 days instead of the usual 2 days from usps.
Certainly possible, but doesn't look like the weather in that area has been cold enough to seriously threaten a bottle. However, the few USPS shipments I've received over the years have been extremely tightly packed into boxes that are barely larger than the bottles/cans I receive. While normally this is fine, if the box did encounter sub-freezing temps, there's much less insulation around the bottle to protect it from the elements. Just something to consider. Oh, & I've sent thousands of bottles over the years without tape. One leaker in total. And it was a stupid twist off...which I won't send again.
Anything is possible and all situations are different. I'm in NY so we get bad weather unlike you on the west coast, but I normally still will ship with weather in the 20s and up. Time in transit can impact things as well. I pack boxes very well, but that time saw the box not deliver on Friday, so it was held up over the weekend (I use UPS and no weekend delivery) and the west coast had a major heat wave. There was a small amount of leakage due to that. I also have someone who will do random trades with me for Jreams. We did one this summer and he used USPS. They somehow lost and routed his box to me from MD down to NC, around NC for 2 days, then finally on its way to me. By the time it got to me both Jreams had popped out the bottom of the can, but didn't burst. Every other time he sent to me it took two days and never had an issue.
