There’s a lot of talk and growing usage of CBD in food and beverages these days. Are there any brewers starting to use CBD’s at scale? If so, are there any making particularly flavorful brews?

It seems Coalition Brewing out of Oregon has made a CBD beer called Two Flowers IPA (India Pale Ale) but that's the only one i can find in the USA (United States of America). However, it seems Green Times Brewing has made High Flyer IPA in the UK (United Kingdom). This is all of course just FYI (For Your Information).

Just had this chat with one of my beer reps earlier. He says Heineken and Corona will be making one and throwing a huge amount of money towards it.

And to answer this regarding the breweries I mentioned above, it'll be standard Corona/Heineken with CBD and zero alcohol.

I was the GM at a small local brewery in Portland, OR and many breweries make them including where I worked. We used local CBD producers who had them tested three times to make sure there is zero THC. There are also quite a few terpene beers out there that also don't have THC but just the aromatics and flavor of the hemp flower. Packaging those types of beers is where it gets tricky. Coalition ran into that problem for a bit from what I've heard. Most breweries like to keep them in house until major breweries start putting them on shelves so that they don't have to worry about the legal issues. One major OR brewery has made a few but they have kept them on a secret tap until it gets sorted out. It seems like it's working itself out. I'm sure we will see a lot of them very soon.

Thanks for this information. Have you tasted many of these beers? If so, what are your thoughts?

Any specific thoughts on this trend? I dig fruity beers and ales but the medicinal benefits seem a weak selling point for brewers.

You know it's funny, when I woke up this morning my first thought was "hey you know what craft beer needs? Another gimmick."

Last I heard CBD and THC are two different compounds found in Cannabis. The first is reputed to have physical health benefits while the later is more psychoactive.
I don't think many people drink beer for the physical benefits, but what do I know?

Someone is going to drink one of these by mistake and sue when they get banned from a profession for life for failing a drug test.

Very true. You can legalize, but it’s still against most company policies. If your a nurse or a doc or most who work for a living your screwed if you fail a drug test. The only ones who can safely partake are those who don’t work are who are unemployed.

The CBD being used in food products nationally comes from the hemp plant.
There is no THC. It is not psychoactive.
Not sure what the purpose is of infusing it in beer other than it being a delivery vehicle. But it’s also in sodas, sauces, honeys etc...
There are many awesome things being discovered about cannabis.
I hope the current novelty of it doesn’t impede the progress being made. Aside from being both stimulating and relaxing recreationally, it’s helped many people including kids medically.

Do these beers have a cannabis/hemp flavor/aroma profile or are they simply delivery systems for the CBD?

I recently had New Belgium's The Hemporer when a friend bought a pitcher of it for our table. Here's what the brewery says about it:

"we found a unique way to recreate hemp terpene flavors in a beer, which complement the inclusion of hop flavors and hemp hearts (seeds) in a brand new, delicious way"

For someone who likes the aroma of cannabis, perahps this is a beer worth seeking out. I personally hated the aroma and flavor of this beer.

Will CBD make someone fail a drug test? Or is THC what is being tested for? I know laws and company policies are different, but here in Kentucky where marijuana is illegal, CBD isn't and can be purchased at health stores.

Many and most drug tests don’t scan for CBD. Rather they scan for THC and compounds that the liver produces after metabolizing it. You’d have to ingest an absurd amount of CBD concentrate to even make a blip on a drug test, assuming there are still trace amounts of THC in the product.

I’ve been using sublingual CBD oil for about a year now. It seems strange to add it to a beer, since it really wouldn’t add much flavor without terpenes, and really doesn’t have a super potent sedative effect unless used in really high doses.

As much of a backer I am for CBD, this does seem a bit gimmicky.

Yup, I messed with some CBD oil a while ago. I bet you have less aches and pains. Sleep better and have less anxiety. Which leads to a more positive demeanor. All this without getting impaired in the slightest.

until the DEA reschedules MJ, no beverages regulated by the TTB may contain it. The TTB has released a circular further stating that TTB-licensed premises (ie breweries and wineries) may not even have it consumed on-site. Folks, if you want both, you gotta cross fade at home.
