With the elections a week in the rearview now, I was thinking that a number of beer issues seem to come up again and again. If a beer election was being held today, what issues would you want to see at the top of the ballot?

    Mandatory bottle dating
    Green/clear bottle ban
    More cans, fewer bottles
    More bottles, fewer cans
    More knowledgeable bar staff
    Mandatory clean tap lines

    You get the picture.

Personally, I'd like to see all beers packaged in 12oz or 500mL format, always available as singles at the same price as 1/6 a 6-pack or 1/4 a 4-pack. Not that I always want to drink only one of a given beer, but I'd certainly like to have that option wherever I shop.

    Cheers!

How could you not include a poll on this one? (there's still time!)

    I vote mandatory bottle dating.

I thought about a poll, but then decided to leave it out because I knew I would inadvertently omit some very obvious issues. The list in the OP are just a few suggestions.

More session beers at lower prices. I remember getting charged $8 a pint for Victory Milltown mild once (price wasn't listed for the firkin tapping), and being really pissed, seeing as I can make two cases of mild for less than $20. I also can't bring myself to buy a sixer of levitation that costs the same as a sixer of almost any other IPA on the shelves. I love session beers, but can't justify spending the money on them.

I'd vote for complete and utter deregulation in the brewing industry

Depends on how you look at it, I guess. If I were to but something low gravity like Day Time or Levitation, the deciding factor would actually be the low alcohol, and it would be the most suitable beer for the given situation. If the price is the same as any other sixer, so be it- at at that point any other sixer wouldn't do.

There are other factors keeping that price point where it is; ingredient cost is pretty minor. There is still the same amount of labor, capital depreciation, label design, cooperage, taxes, registration fees, etc. that must be accounted for. And I bet that lower production volume also does have some impact. Maybe if these kinds of beers do take off and become more popular there will be some drop off in price, but I don't think it'll be where you want it.
Me too- in terms of importance/doable, it's the most up there.

No Green bottles and simple bottled on dates would be top of list for me. Clean draft lines is a must as well. Currently I vote all these things with my wallet so no need for actual legislation.

I'm with the mandatory bottle dating with the caveat that when they put a bottling date on the bottle it is decipherable to the human mind without having to google anything. Just make it standard throughout the industry, for exaample, everyone just use a 'born on' date so it takes the guess work out of making a decision.

I want to make it mandatory that more brewers try brewing more styles out of the IPA/DIPA/Imperial stout quagmire that the industry seems to be stuck in.

More scotch ales, more munich dunkels for starters.

I want to get beer pricing in check, it's getting wild in the industry. $10+ priced bombers of beers, most of them I am not interested in trying. the trend of going from 6 packs down to 4 packs and then charging the same price you used to charge for 6 packs is also a trend I'm not down with.

I'd probably go for less regulation on the brewers, as theres probably an enormous amount of stupid laws brewers have to subject themselves to.

But yeah, the 'bottled on' date would be cool.

Day-Month-Year bottling dates in a light-colored ink (no smudgy block letters and numerals), and more 12oz and 500ml bottle options. Jack's Abby Hoponius Union 4-packs for $12 felt like a damn revelation.

My regulation would be de-regulation. More legislation is pretty much never a solution. Elimination of the three tier system would be a start.

All lager is thin, yellow, fizzy, flavorless and worthless.

And I think clean tap lines is mandatory. Enforcing it is the problem.

    1. I would want breweries to be allowed to ship directly to customers anywhere in the US.
    2. Fewer bombers/750s, more 12oz bottles/cans
    3. Mandatory bottle/can dating in standard format DD/MM/YY

I dream of one day sitting in my favorite beer bar, drinking a glass of DIPA, when a guy comes in and bellies up to the bar next to me, asking the bartender if he's ever heard of this "old time" beer someone told him about. The conversation would go like this:

Bartender: "Yeah, well, we have a pretty large selection of beer here... what's the beer you're asking about?"

Customer: "Ummm... not sure about the pronunciation, but I think it's called 'budwiser."

Bartendre: "Hmmm... doesn't sound familiar. Do you know what kind of beer it is? Is it like a pale ale or a porter maybe?

Customer: "Sorry, I don't know anything else about it."

Bartender: "huh.... well, I've never heard of it either. However, we've got 60 different beers on tap here, and over 200 cans and bottles. Maybe I could interest you in this new pils we just got in from a local brewery... or how about one of the two new lagers we just got in from 'Brewery X?'

Customer: "Hmmmm... they all sound pretty good. Maybe I'll go with one of the lagers you recommended. Thanks man!"

Sigh.... probably a hopeless dream, given my currernt age... but maybe someday not too far off, this scenario will be something more than just a dream. Cheers!

    1. Bottled On Dates.
    2. 12oz 6 Packs or 16oz 4 packs available for everything.
    3. Posted Calorie Counts.
    4. No Pumpkin Ales/Marzens released before September 1st.

That or I would just take less regulation in general as that would help lower prices.

More fresh (sorry brewers, I don't consider 4-6 months as fresh), unique, drinkable pale ales and ipa's on store shelves and less SNPA knock offs and underhopped IPA's. More all malt blonde lagers/bocks made with noble hops. More 12 packs and less large format bottles and 4 packs.
