Next up is quite the wild beast: Curtisimo, described by Sweetwater (not the Sweetwater where I was born, for the record) as: "Oud Bruin ale aged with cherries in bourbon barrels and sangiovese puncheons."

According to the brewer, this is fermented with: Acetobacter, Lactobacillus, Pediococcus, Saccharomyces, and Brettanomyces. For the record, that's three souring agents and one funky yeast strain.

Well! Just .... wow! That sounds right up my alley .... I think?

The full description takes a lot of words, and will of course be linked below. The short version, then, is that this is a very solid take on an Oud Bruin. The adjuncts and barrel aging all play a part in the overall profile, but if you came here for them, you're likely to be disappointed. This is all about a deeply complex and rewarding Oud Bruin with an American twist on the souring agents.

The sour level - pucker factor, if you will - is not over the top for experienced sour drinkers, but I would imagine it's far too sour for a sour novice.

I'm really, really impressed with this one. Full review below:

I’ve only had the base beer, and I thought it was incredibly dry and bitter, but I liked it a lot. Similar imo to Hop Hands.

True, but someone needs to let a lot more folks than just the brewer at a single brewery know. :sunglasses:

A - beautiful golden color with a great frothy white head that lasts
A -candied grapefruit peel, Pine, citrus, and caramel malt
T - taste follows the nose to with candied grapefruit peel up front, followed by citrus and Pine, and then with lingering bitterness at the end
O - typical big Stone IPA (a good thing) with an emphasis on grapefruit. this beer is very refreshing and would would be great during the summer.

Schilling Modernism Dark Lager. Pours a chestnut brown with tan head that quickly recedes. Smell is of dark malts. Taste is of dark malt sweetness, some roast, ends fairly dry. Feel is light and seems undercarbonated. Not a bad dark lager in a style that doesn’t have a lot of domestic examples. Still, I felt there was something lacking.

#2, also from Heretic, this is a perfect counter to a triple IPA, IMHO.

Pour is a charcoal/mahogany color with a tan head that fades to mahogany on the edges. The nose is filled with chocolate and hazelnut aromas, and there’s some stone fruit, too.

The chocolate and hazelnut flavors dominate the taste, but the stone fruit is the anchor, IMHO. This is the definition of an easy drinking dessert beer with loads of flavor.

Hi everyone, hope you’re all having a good end to your weekend.

Drinking this tonight, and it’s a fine brew.
Pours a tick and syrupy deep brown with a huge, bubbly, creamy head. The brewery description says the head is mousse-like, and they are not wrong.

Aroma is rich and sweet coffee with dark maple. The rich amber syrup comes through nicely.

Flavor is fresh coffee, bitter and sweet chocolate and a big underlying push of sweet and full-flavored maple.

Body is thick and syrupy, full, sticky, creamy with suitable carbonation.

This is a tasty brew for dessert. Very full flavored and excellent feel. The sweetness is high but balanced nicely with cocoa and roasty coffee.

Been a while since I've shared. Kinda have a sour taste after one of the photos I posted here was taken and used by an online beer retailer. They removed the photo when I asked, but it still made me question what I want to share. I have a pretty big tasting going on today that I wanted to share.

Today's tasting: Aslin's Starfish series, single vs. double vs. triple.

    Aslin's Starfish.

Pours an opaque orange with a finger of white foam that retains well (half pour from can). Head retention is good. Aroma is orange marmalade, papaya, grapefruit and peanuty malts. Aroma is sweet, with a lot of tropical fruit residual sugar ringing out in each whiff. The orange marmalade cools down a little and settles into more of a fleshy, ripe orange aroma as the beer warms. Flavor profile is orange, tangerine, papaya and grapefruit with thin peanuty malts behind it. There is a kiss of yeast, but it doesn't make much of an impression. Hop notes are light and compact. Mouth feel is fuzzy and fizzily that edges up to a pillowy-soft texture, but breaks apart just prior. Consistency is medium. Overall, a very light IPA that puts citrus and tropical fruits first with a controlled approach.

    Score: 4.25 | 4.25 | 4 | 4 | 4 | BA Score: 4.08 | rDev: -8.3%

    Aslin's Double Starfish.

Pours an opaque ripe-orange with a hint of light turning the edges an opaque white. Head is a finger in height (half pour from can) with good retention. Aroma is orange, grapefruit, resiny hops and biscuity, yeasty malts. Orange is jam like, but smooth and a little less residual sugar. Aroma has a little green bite to it at the finish along with a little alcohol when swirled. Flavor profile is orange, papaya, tangerine and raw grain, peanut and biscuity malts and yeast at the finish. Hop notes are solid, but not in the face, setting up a very controlled presence. Alcohol is absent from the flavor profile. Mouth feel is medium in thickness with a smooth - almost still - consistency that opens up to a lightly silty grain at the finish. In other words, texture is akin to a lightly rindy orange juice. Overall, hops are solid and mingle well with the malts, although the hops steal the show. It's getting a little higher in ABV, but the alcohol still remains absent in the flavor profile despite making a brief appearance in the aroma.

    Score: 4.25 | 4.25 | 4.25 | 4 | 4.25 | BA Score: 4.23 | rDev: -6%

    Aslin's Triple Starfish.

Pours a foggy and hazy dark orange with a finger of head (half pour from can). Head retention is good. Aroma is orange, tangerine, papaya, herbal and sticky resin hop notes. Booze seeps through a little, adding a touch of heat to the back. Flavor profile is orange, tangerine, papaya, resiny, herbal hops with a subtle kiss of heat. Heat is a little more apparent in the aroma than the flavor profile. Caramely, nutty, bready malts add a little base, with the hop:malt ratio sitting at 70/30 - a little more malt than the base Starfish and Double Starfish options. Mouth feel is a touch fuzzy and stills out on the tongue as it warms. Effervescence is minimal. It has a medium thickness. Overall, big hop notes pair up with strong malts for a boozy IPA. Nice balance when considering the ABV level, landing it in 'dangerous' territory, since it slips down so easy.

    Score: 4 | 4.25 | 4.25 | 4 | 4.25 | BA Score: 4.21 | rDev: -4.1%

I wasn't able to fit the bottle from @Roguer in today, as I continue to focus on cleaning the hoppy beers out of my fridge.

Having my first ever bcbs. 2018, regular, poured at cellar temp.
The look ended up being the least impressive aspect of this brew, head was super active and dissipated quickly without much lacing. The smell is big and complex with dark fruit, chocolate, light booziness, and a generally pleasing rich roasty quality that perfectly counterbalances this dreary rain I'm living in.
Taste is remarkably chocolate heavy, bitter cacao with subtle bourbon and barrel notes and very faint dark fruit notes. The coherence of the flavor is what most impresses me. So many big beers these days are a bit of a clunky ride through their flavor profile, this one (and in my opinion any really well made beer) is one clean complex flavor that has the characteristics I mentioned. Really enjoyable.
Mouthfeel is just as impressive, obviously large and in charge but not a thick syrupy tongue coater.
I am duly impressed, always a little iffy approaching these highly reputed brews but glad to see that this is one that deserves (imho) it's praise.
Also noted that I got the bottle for 12$, at the time didn't pay close attention and assumed it was 12 oz, looking at it it's 16.9 oz making this a pretty decent deal.

Greetings from middle TN, where we enjoyed a mercifully sunny and mild day after what seemed like endless rain - we set the record for most rain in a month yesterday (the 23rd day of the month). Thankfully the flooding was minimal and the frozen stuff stayed away. A bit of a late NBS start for me as I enjoyed Southern Grist's 3rd Anniversary party yesterday here in Nashville. There were 1000+ attendees and 72 guest taps; the lineup was phenomenal with amazing breweries from every corner of the country. By far the best beer fest I have attended.

Other Half was there with All Citra Everything and their 4th Anniversary IPA, both of which were exceptional. The 4th Anny was a highlight of the day for me.

Thanks for the extremely generous @JBowenGeorgia, I have another OH beer to enjoy today, and this one is a collab with Creature Comforts:

Look: Beautiful. A very hazy golden-yellow color with a thick and rocky white head. The foam persisted for the entire drink.
Aroma: loads of tropical fruit, oranges, tangerines, berries, and resin.
Taste: my palate was first hit with a sweet citrus blast, which melted into more tropical notes. The mid and late palate featured berries and resin. The sweetness was likely from the high ABV and played well with the hops. A dry bready malt presence.
Feel: pillowy and as soft as any big NE DIPA I've tasted. There was a warming on the finish reminding me of the double-digits ABV but this was not boozy.
Overall: outstanding as expected. A great example of a world class big NEDIPA.

Thanks again to John for this one!

Dry hopped Gose from Prairie. This was fantastic. Great head retention/soapy lacing for a sour. Aromas and flavors of big sour/tart/tangy lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, citrus peel/zest, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berries, red/green apple, white grape/wine, sea salt, hay, straw, and grass; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough malts; lighter notes of coriander, peppercorn, pine, leathery/musty/lacto funk, white wine vinegar, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate lactic tang/tartness; light herbal/grassy bitterness, and yeast spiciness on the finish. medium carbonation, light-medium body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced bready/grainy malts, lactic acidic, and light sticky spice/salinity in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing acidic/tangy dryness, no puckering. Very flavorful/refreshing, not overly lactic/salty, minimal warming 5.9%. They know what the hell they are doing with these dry hopped sours. Amazing balanced of juicy, vibrant, lightly dank Falconers/Cascade hops and Brett/Lacto complexity; with a nice pale/wheat malt backbone against acidity. Minimal residual sweetness from crisp dryness. Worthy of a 4 pack buy as with the other canned sours. 4.25

[IMG] Notch Brewing Voll Projekt Helles Spezial. This is a second label from Notch for higher ABV beers, as their standards are all sub-5%.

Pours a pale gold with nice white head. Decent retention and a bit of lacing. Smell is of bready malts and some citrusy hops. Taste starts with some nice bready malts and sweetness, then a lemon bite, ends crisp with maybe a hint of almond paste. Feel is medium with good carbonation.

This is a great Helles. Large flavor on both the malt and hops end, hits all the right notes along with some tasty surprises and a great crisp snap. A couple liters of this in a beer garden and I would be very happy.

    Seriously a weird beer.

A chardonnay barrel-aged scotch ale, yes, please. I enjoy trying unique combinations brewers come up with, some are good, some are not. The beer is 50 degrees and served in a tulip glass. The beer produced a two finger frothy and airy tan head with fair retention. The head dissipated rather quickly leaving some lacing on the glass. The beer is a murky dark ruby brown color about SRM 26. The clarity of the beer is hazy, but the light does penetrate the beer. Overall not a bad looking beer.

The aromas in the beer are tropical, sour grapes, peat, salt air, medium roasted malts, caramel, wood, must, earthiness, a touch of smokiness, malty sweetness, and bready. The aromas in the beer for me, are muted. It was tough to pull out what I did. The chardonnay barrel age has masked most of the scotch ale aromas.

The flavors in the beer are musty, sour grapes, peat, char, salt, medium roasted malts, caramel, toffee, earthiness, bready, tropical, butter, wood, vanilla, molasses, and dank basement.

The mouthfeel of the beer is dry and round.

The body of the beer is full, medium carbonation, and a full finish.

This is one weird beer. The chardonnay barrel completely took over the scotch ale flavors. I got funky off flavors that I have not experienced in a beer. Sour grapes flavors, but not vinegary. The beer took on this musty grape flavor that I would get from drinking Ice Wines. I am not sure what to think of this beer. The beer is intriguing for sure.
