It seems to be a given that many of us beer hounds enjoy our tuneage when drinking.

    What about reading?

Is there any particular type of reading one enjoys while nursing a cold one?

Some old standbys for me would be any Charles Bukowski literature, but also history and religion and philosophy printed matter will do (e.g., WWII History, Adventure Cycling, and Free Inquiry for magazines). And along the same lines for books...on my nightstand I currently (and literally) have the following books: 'The Portable Thomas Jefferson', 'Black Rednecks and White Liberals' by Thomas Sowell, 'Tropic of Cancer' by Henry Miller, 'The Jungle Grows Back' by Robert Kagan, 'Songs of the Doomed' by Hunter S. Thompson and an anthology titled 'Pure Pulp' (featuring "hardboiled crime writing").

So, just wondering what other BA's may read when imbibing...

Currently I'm reading "The Source: How Rivers made America and America Remade Its Rivers" by Martin Doyle (W.W. Norton, 2017). Good, expansive, clearly written book. Plus... I'm told there's a lot of water in beer, so you know... we should read this.

My recent reads while drinking include :
    Elmer Gantry by Sinclair Lewis
    Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey
Pretty much everything John Steinbeck has written. Working through Undaunted Courage by Stephen E Ambrose right now. I want to finish it to get on to Washington's Spies by Alexander Rose. Those who enjoyed the series TURN, will enjoy reading that.

My bad. My only reading is WBAYDN. I agree. Very sad.

But at the risk of getting my ass kicked, I keep up with politics and the world situation. So Mike what do you you think? am not taking the bait.

    I like this thread.

I’m about half way through a second read of one of my favourites: Anthony Powell’s “A Dance to the Music of Time.” I’ve also been re- reading Leo Strauss’ “The City and Man,” a real classic.

For lighter fare, I subscribe to Shindig! Magazine as well as Ugly Things and enjoy perusing those, especially when sleepiness begins setting in.

I really enjoy picking up some e. e. cummings while a couple deep. Also really enjoy In Such Hard Times by Wei Ying-Wu. Especially since he writes fondly about sharing his own rice wines with good company

I had a phase when I'd ride my road bike to a local brewery, sit on the patio, and read World War 2 (Pacific war) books. Guadal Canal, Midway - the small islands had intense amphibious landing invasions, while I contend Midway was the ballsiest, and most consequential wartime gamble in world history.

Reading requires thought . . . internet only requires beer.

I tend to read about beer when having one, on the internet mainly. Yesterday checked out what I was drinking, for example . Learned what a Hell beer is :astonished:

I can't read non-fiction, or fiction with intricate plots, when drinking. I read history when sober, but with a buzz the Spenser, Reacher, and Quinn Colson series' are my favorites.

For me it's reading BA forums, news sites, and whatever else comes to mind while I'm having a near-room-temperature beer. Should get back into the mysteries I used to read avidly, now that my vision has been "fixed".

    "Beer and Reading" huh?

Reading was one of my favorite "cheap beers" when I was a kid. Think I was in town (Reading, PA) around the time the brewery closed (after which C. Schmidt & Sons of Phila. then bought the brand) and had some of the last draught beer from the company.

I read a lot of Literary Fiction with some Fantasy thrown in. I finished Marlon James' new fantasy Black Leopard, Red Wolf which took me a little longer than usual cause of the style it was written in. Though it was excellent. I can usually get through about two books a week, but I wanted to take my time with this. He came to give a talk in Houston a couple of weeks ago, and it was a blast listening to and meeting him.

Tonight, I'm going to see Valeria Luiselli (her new book is Lost Children Archive) and Tommy Orange (his debut novel is There There and has gotten a lot of press, I read it when it was released last year). They are speaking at Rice University. I'm currently in the middle of Lost Children Archive, and will stop by the Gingerman to have a few cask pints and continue on with the book before walking over to the talk.

A don't really belong to any "book club" but this is a good resource I use. With lots of discussion on all things literature. The moderators have an algorithm they use to predict the Pulitzer. Its actually pretty interesting how the Pulitzer processes works, as there are no short lists, just the announcement all at once in April. The predictor here is more fun, to follow than anything, and there are a lot of good books being talked about.
