I've always loved history, particularly books about the Civil War and other military history, and historical fiction.

I missed the pun. But then again I have had just a few of the brews so it is not something that would ring a bell. From what I recall, it is a great beer.

I read all day for work, etc. When it comes to beer I am all about music and relaxing. :stuck_out_tongue:

Nothing like catchin' a buzz and philosophizing. Currently reading Alan Watt's "Psychotherapy East & West." Usually when I can't manage to understand the content, I've had to much, and it's time to switch to tv or games lol.

I used to read a lot of Alan Watts back in the 70s. I may have to re-read some of his books again.

When I was in grad school for history I often had a beer or few while I was reading, and whether it was dense cultural theory readings like Anderson and Spivak (I drank a lot during and after reading Spivak) or depressing, in-depth primary sources from the Holocaust, I found that beer usually goes well with reading

While drinking a few I am much more on the net looking at things I like.

    History of candy
    Cool vintage card
    Trolling EBay
    Reading about vintage toys
    Fishing history and lures

    When not drinking I like

Most types of History and biographies
    Cultural studies

I do much less reading now then I did years ago.

    Enjoy

Our reading interests are broad enough and overlap enough that we could probably have some good discussions over a beer or two. Just finished a run on Nelson Algren and picked up a book about "How the Gringos Stole Tequilla."

Back when we all wore onions on our belts, there used to be a magazine called Beer Advocate which would be delivered to your mailbox. I liked to read it while drinking.

Beer works better with audio books tbh, gotta have a free hand to do 12oz curls!

I read so much at work. I have no time for recreational reading anymore plus I have lost my interest in fiction. Two years ago, I found an old copy of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, re-read that for the 3rd-4th time but that's about it.

News & sports is about all I read and stuff about beer.

I've been reading Rick Atkinson's World War Two trilogy- An Army at Dawn, The Day of the Battle, and The Guns at Last Light. This set won a Pulitzer Prize. I've just finished An Army at Dawn, about the war in North Africa 1942-1943. A beer is often at hand. I also recommend anything by Ken Follett or Edward Rutherfurd. Great historical fiction. Beer mixes well with any of these selections...Also, Elmore Leonard, John Le Carre, Jean Giono, Blaise Cendrars. Well that's enough for now!

This thread makes me wonder how many college towns have a watering hole called Library Bar. I told my parents often during my freshman year that I was spending a lot of time at the library.

I read a modest amount, but I can't think the last time I had a beer while doing so. I read a lot of military history, travelogs, and recently a lot of books about hiking the AT, PCT, and the CDT. I also look forward to each new release by Dan Brown (Angels & Demons, The DaVinci Code).

It sounds like one of your favorite authors might be Jeff Shaara. If not, check out his website for some great military historical fiction.

Books are like old friends for me, so we hang out with a beer occasionally. I tend to re read books. The Camulod Chronicles, Game of Thrones, LOTR. I am currently reading the newest Stormlight Archive book (Brandon Sanderson). It came out a while ago, but didn't have time to read it.

Yes, I enjoyed Gods and Generals very much, though I think I preferred the Killer Angels.

Has anyone read "The Brewer's Tale: A History of the World According to Beer" by William Bostwick? Just picked it up from the local library.

Wonder if this thread will spark @LeperJim to "revive" his BeerAdvocate, Booknotes, and Beer (in some order) theme day?

On point, I guess I do usually read beer news when drinking (often those free magazines available at a local bar). At home, I don't usually read specific styles with beer. I do enjoy the two combined more in the summer, though, when one can sit outside and enjoy both while relaxing in warm weather.

Obviously it depends on the amount of drinking, but I like short stories - something I don't need top depend on remembering the next day. Raymond Carver and Thom Jones pair perfectly with beer.

Also satire. I remember drinking my way through Candide and thinking it was hilarious.
