I had that as a very solid roasty, somewhat dry stout that I truly enjoyed and thought it hid its alcohol well. Seems like we had at least some of that in common in our reviews. And I, too, would be glad to have it again on our next trip to Portland.

I've been lurking on NBS all day while I was working and now it's time to finally join in! A local brewery, Southern Grist, celebrated their 3rd Anniversary last week with an incredible party that featured 72 guest taps and an unbelievable lineup from every corner of the country. To commemorate the occasion, SG released two beers, a pastry stout and a DIPA. I was able to enjoy the stout on tap and have a few bottles stored away, but I somehow missed out on their IPA. Good thing that I was able to pick up a few cans to go. SG describes this one as a "commemorative New England DIPA...triple dry hopped with Citra, Barbe Rouge, and Nelson Sauvin hops." I had to look up Barbe Rouge - it is a French hop with citrus fruit and red berry flavors.

I loved the look of this one, especially in the proper glassware. There was a very hazy bright yellow color with a thick white head that lingered before slowly settling into a firm cap. The aroma featured the best of Nelson in my opinion - a fruity, white wine element accompanied by a dank, herbal resin to keep it interesting. Pineapple, strawberry, and mango were also there. The taste followed nicely. I detected the tropical flavors at first, with the herbal and Nelson notes joining a bit later. Bitterness was "soft" and typical for a NEIPA. No astringency or chalkiness. The bready malt was there but in the background. The Nelson was there for me on the finish with a dank, white wine character. Feel was soft with a relatively dry finish. Overall an outstanding beer worthy of the great celebration last week. A great mix of tropical notes with earthy, resiny flavors to keep it interesting. Well-executed with no off-flavors and just a pleasure to enjoy.
Looks like @richj1970 and I had similar impressions. Cheers!

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Funk Teku glass canned on 2/26/19. Pours a very attractive clear orange with a two finger sticky white head that leaves thin lines of lace behind. 4.75

Smell papaya, tangerine, earthy herbal, and just a hint of grapefruit. 4.25

Taste follows really amazingly balanced nothing dominates and exactly like the nose, really tasty. 4.25

Mouthfeel is a big medium, plenty of life, maybe a tad dry, and drinks like a 6.5% should but crisp and clean, crazy crushable. 4.25

Overall this is just great and it is nice to drink something so clean and tasty these days. 4.25

I was at Holler in Houston...again this Sunday afternoon. Guess what, they have something new. The So Classic Saison. 6.6 ABV, I asked about the hops but forgot to right them down. I remember Mandarina Bavaria, and that is the main hop I get. Saison yeast and Belgian Pils malts.

Pours a hazy golden/orange color. A nice cap of white foam has good retention and plenty of lace. The aroma has a bit of sulfur, maybe DMS? Though very minor, and fades quickly. The peppery and slightly phenolic yeast comes into play next. Light banana esters and citrus, light pine, light grapefruit hops linger. Just a touch of bitterness. Medium body, and crisp effervescent carbonation. Very enjoyable to drink. I had two at the brewery. Full review below:

Tired Hands Technicolor Splendor. An 8% NEDIPA with Simcoe hops.

    Canned 17 days ago.

Pours hazy yellow-orange with a thin white head. 4.25

The nose is peach, bubblegum, and subtle pine. 4.5

The taste is orange, peach, and pineapple, with some balancing dank bitterness on the backend. 4.25

The mouthfeel is medium. Round mid-palate but lighter on the backend. 4.25

Overall, I really enjoy Tired Hands' single-hop (D)IPAs. This isn't my favorite one - Eviscerated Pathway of Beauty (with Citra hops) retains that title - but it's very good. Fruity and dank. 4.25 - 4.31 rDev +0.2%

I agree. On both fronts. My favorite American AALs are Schlitz, High Life, Narrganasett, Coors, and Hudepohl. This is one I grab as much as, or more than any of those. Especially on Taco night.

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks to @lordofthewiens for today's introduction. Continuing on my local brewery crawl for new beers this week. Finally made it up to my closest local brewery today(Parker's Hilltop) and bought a bunch of crowlers. They gave me a free 2L growler and a tour of the brew house, which was extremely impressive. Multiple 10-15 BBL fermenters and brite tanks with a glycol chilling system. Apparently a basement cellar for barrels, but I didn't head down there. Head brewer was not there today, but one of the employees was very knowledgeable about their processes. All high quality brews I sampled, so I just bought everything they had on tap.

    Beer:

Very nice hefeweizen from Elk Brewing. Lasting fluffy head retention/thick foamy lacing the whole glass. Aromas and flavors of lemon, orange, banana, bubblegum, clove, peppercorn, peach, pear, red apple, and citrus peel/zest; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit malts; herbal, floral, grassy hops; and yeast earthiness. A bit bit too fruity/yeasty, muted aromas. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy bitterness; and pepper/clove yeast spiciness on the finish. High carbonation and medium body; creamy, silky, bready, grainy wheat; and some sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing bitter/carbonated dryness; no hop astringency. Very flavorful, pretty refreshing, no warmth of 6%. A little too bitter/hoppy that expected, but not overwhelming. Great balance of nicely rich pale/wheat malts, German yeast, and citrus/earthy hops. Very enjoyable. 3.84

Coop Ale Works Cask-It Series Rum Barrel Aged DNR. 3.52 overall

Cork opens with an incredibly weak pop. Pours a turbid brown with minimal cream colored head. Zero lacing & head retention

S: Plummyness, a touch of vinegar, boozey notes once warm

T: Figs, raisins, a little vanilla & a touch of dark rum up front. Barrel dryness/oakyness as this warms, a a little cola, a little booze warmth, just a little fig & other jammy flavors as well, plus some leafy hops. Finishes dry, figgy with a little sweetness/bite

MF: Fairly firm carbonation medium body, warming, carbonation smooths out once warm

Had high hopes for this one, not worth the money paid & not up to snuff for this brewery or this series

    Bourbon county orange midnight stout
    ...solid black color
... medium light carbonation with an above average body. It's not oily or creamy but has a thick pleasant feel
..aroma is orange liqueur and orange cream candy, roasted malt, espresso, black coffee
..taste is definitely orange ligiour followed by a a very smooth base beer that's mostly roasted malt and coffee
..overall it was candy like a bit but not in a bad way,not sweet nor very bitter. Best word I can come up with is smooth. Finishing up bottle from earlier as it does have a very high abv but well hidden[IMG]

    Evening NBS.
Waiting for what looks to be the first and hopefully last, big snow of the season. Luckily I'm off today and I possibly will open the brewery restaurant late tomorrow depending on the weather. Need to get a new beer in today because the next few Sundays will be booked with a reggae brunch and than St Pats.
Having always liked Hi Res naturally DDH Hi-Res was an easy choice.
Pours a golden copper color with a beige head about 1/2 " that fades relatively quickly to a thin ring. Lacing is minimal.
Aroma is classic West Coast amped up: Lots of ripe orange, grapefruit and pine. Alcohol comes through in the scent as well. Not a lot I'm getting from the smell here.
Taste comes through with tons of bitter grapefruit and damp pine again. There are some tropical notes of pineapple and maybe passionfruit? There seems to be a touch of crystal malts peeking through but damn this is a bitter beer with almost no sweetness which is perfectly fine but there seems to be a "middle" missing.
Feel is medium/full, decent carb, very dry and bitter piney tongue coating finish.
Overall I'm not going to get into this too much because I'm finding it quite one dimensional. I love the West Coast IPAs so that's not influencing my feelings here. Its decent, tastes clean but is just over the top hop ( which for me is really hard to accomplish) which lives up to its billing 111 IBUs. I like plain old Hi-Res over this one. Won't purchase again.
And since there's so many food pics today here's a couple of specials I ran this weekend at the brewery. Cheers!
    [IMG] [IMG]
Beer Hall Brawl"- Our house made spaetzle poached in our What Cheer? Pils, battling with Kielbasa, baked gratin style with melty Swiss and a touch of butter. A bit of the Alps that goes great with beer. This weekend!
Starting tomorrow: "Pierogi Summit" House made with russets and Farmers Cheese - One with Gochuchang (Korean chili paste) touched w/ Ponzu, the other with Roasted Garlic, touched w/ Creme Fraiche and Chives. Both sitting atop a puree of roasted beets, pears and ginger. We know you'll want to seal this deal!

Good afternoon NBS, starting my evening with my first Stickman Brew thanks to @thebeers! Eat Your Landlord, seems like the prefect statement for a beer that has Gritty on it.

    Thank you thebeers for this
16 oz can poured into a teku

A- A hazy light golden straw with two finger white head

S- Strawberries, melons, some tropical fruits, citrus, a little grassy/earthy.

T- Melons, some citrus, tropical fruits, some strawberries, some wet grass, no bitterness to help balance the beer.

    M- Smooth, medium body.

O- A nice NEIPA, I know they are saying this is a 0 IBU beer and NEIPA tend to down play the bitterness of an IPA, but a bitter finish to this beer could really help balance it.

    Cheers!

    Bell’s Original

This feels like a lawsuit in the making with Bell’s whisky. This NEIPA will probably be received like it’s a bit too late to the party. It’s very hazy, full bodied, but rather subdued. I would think that lovers of bigger beers will find this too restrained. Tastes of apricot and goes down easy. More of a crowd pleaser than something for the geeks.

Hello, NBS friends. I have a couple of beers from one of my favorite breweries tonight, first up is a beer in the “style du jour” category in the beer nerd universe.

    3.99/5 rDev +3.9%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

An aggressive pour yields a beautiful, crystalline golden beer with a soapy off-white head. Very fruity nose, with lemongrass and passion fruit most prominent.

The taste has the white grape flavors referenced on Revolution’s website, and a generous lemongrass flavor as well. The mouthfeel, while very nice, isn’t as dry as found in the brut style.

I love the Hero series, and this is a really drinkable, but it’s a step below the others in the series. And that’s okay.
