Going to STL next week. What breweries are missing from my list? Narrow Gauge Perennial Side Project Brewing 4 Hands 2nd Shift Rockwell (Out of town a bit) White Rooster Farmhouse Brewery Main & Mill Thanks!
White Rooster is a bit of a hike, but a great spot. If you like lagers I'd highly recommend one of Urban Chestnut Brewing Co.'s locations. Also, love Civil Life for traditional English/German styles.
Definitely add heavy riff and wellspent. I’d consider alpha and modern as well, they don’t get a ton of hype due to some past drama but their beers are great. Schlafly Tap room and square 1 are cool too. I’d skip 4 hands if I were you
If you go to White Rooster, also go to Scratch. It adds about an hour total of drive time r/t. But it's one of the best brewery settings anywhere.
Hey guys! I’m going to be in STL for a few days for work, looks like I will be staying a bit outside the city (Clayton I believe?) if you could hit only one spot in the area which would you choose? For context I’m coming from Boston where I am pretty spoiled (Treehouse, Trillium, Jack’s Abby etc). Take away would be cool but I would be happy with just a few pours. Who do you think is on top right now? Thanks!!
Depends on what kind of beer you like. That being said, there is a Craft Beer Cellar in Clayton as well as the Wine and Cheese Place - both are excellent bottle shops. (Total Wine isn't too far either).
Side Project, Schlafly Bottleworks, and Heavy Riff are all very close to Clayton and good choices brewery wise
Thanks for the initial feedback! I looked into Side Project but looks like they are only open weekends which is disappointing (I’ll be there mid-week). There is a Schlafly in the airport right? How do you guys feel about Perennial or Narrow Gauge these days?
Side Project has another spot called Side Project Cellar. Open Tuesday-Saturday. Perennial and Narrow Gauge are both great. Don't sleep on 2nd Shift. It's honestly pretty easy to do a couple of spots in an evening from Clayton.
If you are flying through terminal 2, the Pasta House has a bunch of Schlafly beers on tap and the restaurant at the other end (name escapes me) has an okay selection of 4-6 local craft beers on tap. Never been to perennial - Im also usually there during the (early) week and they aren't open then. Narrow Gauge is in Cuginos - their food is solid - Always enjoy it but it won't blow you away. They also have an extensive tap list of local options so you can try that as well as Narrow Gauge stuff. Narrow Gauge's stuff is great. If you are into lagers, Id recommend UCBC as another option to consider. And @Ericstl6 is right - you could easily hit a few places in one evening.
Just visited from CA: Our rank-ordering was Side Project > Narrow Gauge > 2nd Shift > Main and Mill (southern suburb). We walked to and from Side Project from Clayton, where we were staying both times.
2nd of 4 nights in STL area completed...Narrow Gauge is always good, 2nd Shift is super, loved Heavy Riff and made many friends at Side Project Cellar! (wanted on-site bottles but did not want to solodome them, so made "friends" and the bartender poured and split the cost...thanks @stevegoz for the tip!)
