Didn't read much of this thread... but there's about 15 or so that I chose not to add because of laziness and I wish yall would try them and add them so I can tick :-)

NO! FOR FUCKS SAKE NO! One looks up a brewery, and then sees the beers, made by that brewer, listed in alphabetical order.

I'm a wee bit sad that you haz no grasp. Not much sads, but enough to make me hope you don't have access to the nuclear launch codes.

Its not detrimental, its just unnecessary. If you type in Boqueron Blonde, even without the Boqueron in the listed name, its going to take you to that exact page. The search function can include the name of the brewery.

    Department of the redundancy department

There are definitely some exceptions where the names of the beer are similar to/the same as the name of the brewery but that is few and far between in the grand scheme of things... At least it did not get named FitBeer Ltd. Fitbeer as the beer name

For example, take a look at the beer list for New Holland Brewing Company which has not yet been cleaned up to remove the unnecessary "New Holland" at the beginning of all beers. For example, if you were looking for Black Hatter and you just scanned the list alphabetically (looking at the Bs) you would think it had not yet been created but if you thought to look for New Holland Black Hatter on that page you would find it (located in the Ns area of the list).

There really are not all that many of those - there are the beers whose name is just the style or breweries that make only one beer and it is the same as the brewery name. Overall, there are not that many of either case when considering how many beers there are in the Beer Advocate database.

Not exactly - all beers are [Brewery] [Beer Name] or [Brewery] [Beer Style] so in the majority of cases that should not be a part of the name of the beer, as all beers are already listed under a brewery making it redundant. All of the incorrectly named beers eventually end up being work for the Site Editors to clean up in the database.

I was referring to brewers naming beers "no name"

When I entered this site I had greater difficulties to comprehend this. The brewery name often is the biggest text on the bottle, kind of counterintuitive not to add it. What's more, the instruction is to add the beer name "as the brewery names it". And in that name often the brewery name is included, also on their web page. But I have got to understand that redundancy thing better now, will avoid it.

When adding a beer you will have to look at the brewery list anyway, in those alphabetical ways, and there it's obvious you don't need the brewery name in the beer name, if it's exactly the same (except of course there may be some additional words/letters in the brewery name, should be easy to spot)

They call their Blonde Ale "Boquerón Blonde Ale". But their "La Piragua" Belgian Blonde is not called "Boquerón La Piragua Belgian Blonde Ale", just "La Piragua".

But I get it, if this is the naming scheme we want to blanket over the site that's OK and I will report beers with brewery names where I see them. That said, keep in mind people adding beer are not digging into some 3 page thread on the forums for correct instructions on how to add beer. One helpful tip would be to add a note under the name box on the Add Beer page, instructing not to add the brewery name period. Or Todd's 2014 post could also be updated to reflect this discussion.

If you search for just "IPA", 2 of the 3 IPAs that show on the 1st page with no names (Lagunitas' and Goose Island's) have the brewery names on there. And these are some of the biggest names around. So it's understandable why users adding beer would think that's OK. Hell, I've been here 6+ years and thought it was fine since Weihenstephan, Sam Adams and other "famous" breweries have their names like that here and everywhere else.

    Another question that I have.

    Which is better:

Entering a beer as, say, Jones or Jones Imperial Stout. I see a lot of one word beer entries that don't give you any hint of what style they are.

From what's been discussed here, I'd say it would just be "Jones". Since it's already listed under that style anyway and having the style on there is redundant. But the amount of beers with the "[Beer][Style]" title is even more common than the "[Brewery][Beer]" one, so I would understand the confusion when people try to add new beers.

So Melvin's Your IPA would be fine as Your?

That's different since the "Your" in there is a possessive pronoun and not an actual noun. It needs the IPA to work. So just the pronoun wouldn't be right, I would say. It just so happens the object is also the style name.

To user your earlier example, "Jones IPA", would just be "Jones" but "Jones' IPA" (since it's possessive) would be correct as "Jones' IPA".

If Imperial Stout is in the beer name as defined by the brewer I vote for Jones Imperial Stout. If not then not.

Only brewery names included in the beer names as defined by the brewer are FORBIDDEN... There may well be a Jones Pale Ale. Just Jones doesn't make the cut.

Not all breweries have those crazy unique easily recognizable names.

At the top of the Add a Beer page, you see the following:
    Add Beer
Read How-To: Add Beers on BeerAdvocate before adding a beer.

This is a link to the instructions on adding a beer which is Todd's post from 2014 (these things do not change all that frequently).

As for beer names that do not meet the current site naming standards, I'm sure there are many out there that need to be corrected (the do not include the brewery name instruction was a clarification at some point between 2007 and 2014 but I cannot remember when and some of those beers pre-date it). Please feel free to report an update and I'm sure myself and the other Site Editors will work on cleaning them up as we get to them - just so you are aware the Site Editor team is not all that large and are all volunteers.
