I've recently started alternating between IPAs and stouts as I imbibe. This seems too bring out the most of the beers. IPAs are hoppier and stouts have more chocolate, coffee, etc. Anyone else do this?

Same, just alternating between anything hoppy and anything not driven by hops helps. Sours, stouts, lager, etc. Been doing that for a while now and it does help. Cheers!

Even more so :sunglasses:. I'll tend to make so many beer 180s in a "session" it'd give you whiplash. But the reason it works is because it doesn't take long for your palate to get acclimated and desensitized to certain stimuli- so just throw the opposite thing at it next to get the most out of it.

Another great reason to keep a good variety of styles on hand.

I've noticed when I order a flight that has multiple IPAs that I get hop fatigue most times, thus I don't get to appreciate the end sips of those beers. Other than those occasional repetitious IPA flights, I rarely drink the same beer/style one after another in a bar/restaurant. I also keep a variety of styles at home so that I can vary my styles. This whole process gives credence to the old saying that 'Variety is the spice of life'.

Variety is indeed the spice of life. I am just finishing a lovely run of Toast from Moonlight (a malt heavy lager ) followed by Good Clean Fun (wcipa from Fieldwork) and now Sump from Perennial (big coffee stout). The combination of rising strength and increasingly intense flavors works well for me

Alternating with glasses of water (sparkling or still) not only helps the palate but the overall experience in the long-run

Yes, I do this. I have an IPA then about 500 stouts/porters/quads - mostly BA, then another IPA.

Can't say I have any real pattern to it other than when the glass is empty reach for another.

I have recently been alternating between abv levels, less than 5%, right around 4.5 most drinking days, then a few bigger beers here and there. The taste of the bigger beers seem enhanced now compared to drinking them all the time.

If I start with an IPA, I stay on that specific one for the session. I find beers heavy on hops like citra completely annihilate my palate, making other ipas with different hop combinations taste off. I usually don't session much, maybe two moderate gravity beers (5-6%abv) if I do. Most malt forward beers come in higher, and in larger format, so it's one and done.

Imperial Stouts and 2X IPA's are my goto brews. Nothing else seems to come close in flavor.
