So I was out walking today and I was thinking how great it would be to have a really shitty, skunky macro brew after I got home! I couldn't believe I had that thought! And as I pondered, it made sense. With all of the quality I do drink, it just may be nice to go old school and have something AWFUL - yet made me smile.

I want to make a really bad joke about Mr. Kraft and a crazy irony, but will refrain....

Hey, sometimes a shitty beer makes you appreciate all of the good ones.

Every once in a while, I find myself at a wedding reception or some other gathering where only macro is available - and someone hands me one. If I can't avoid it without being rude, I'll drink it. But craving it when so much good to outstanding craft is readily available? Nah. If I'm out with friends or family and can't find good craft, I'll drink diet coke over macro, then have an outstanding cellar beer when I get home.

Huh, interesting thought, but the first thing that popped into my head is that you'd be hard pressed to go to the store and find a down right nasty shitty beer. You might have to dig deep into the cheap crappy Malt Liquors to find one I suppose. You could easily make one just leave a Corona in a window exposed to the sun for a few days and have a go.

Never fear, seekers of shitty light beer. Pearl Street (La Crosse, WI) has your back.

If the TTB is looking for truth-in-advertising, Pearl Street probably nailed it

Either last year or the year before I picked up an Olde English on a whim because I had been talking about how it was based on an old school Scottish recipe, and the Olde English was not half bad. It's probably something I may never buy again, but don't count out all macros for being bad, especially after you have had a chance to develop your palate

Yep. Sometimes I’ll order a macro AAL even at a place with decent craft options, no shame. At my favorite local pizza place, you’ll probably see me drinking either Bell’s or Old Style. There is truly a time and place for every beer style, and a few of the macro brews are better than any of the craft AALs I have had.

I bought a "fancy" bottle (looked sort of like a champagne bottle) of Miller High Life (champagne of beers) for my wife for xmas as a joke. Things warmed up in KY and I did a little yard work and decided that the "champagne of beers" sounded pretty good and it was, I was kind of shocked at how easy it went down and how much I like it, since it had been about 15 years since I last had a High Life.

TL;DR The OP should indulge his desire for a macro beer, but avoid the skunk

Considering that I've only had one beer from them (Pearl Street) that was good, I'd say so.

Also, All the talk about Hamm's, makes me want to run, and get a 6 pack. As a child of the 70's and 80's, the damn beer bear weighs on me.

Speaking of Hamm's, I think my mom stil has a vintage Hamm's beer tray at her house. I'll check the next time I'm there.

I think we need to get off the Macro is a shit beer thing. Yes, there’s better beers out there, but getting real big beer is where we all started. And it’s ok to admit that’s you might like one every now and then.

OP mentions skunky...as a matter of fact, I sometimes find skunk really refreshing. For the longest time I assumed that the skunked flavor in Heineken was intended, and I enjoyed it.

High Life is one of my favorites. I actually wanted to pick up one of those bottles for New Year’s, but I didn’t see them around.
