I watch my New England forums pretty regularly for latest info on my favorite breweries and new places -- same w/a few in midwest and pacific. Most threads are made of 90%+ fans of the brewery and an occasional detractor/troll or two who have soured on brewery/product/hype -- which is fine - and often entertaining. Nothing I've seen, however, is as bad as the Trillium thread is right now -- current posters have essentially scared off most fans -- and now the posts are mostly folks deriding the beer prices, business practices, changes in brewing process affecting flavors for the bad, overpriced food at the breweries restaurant, etc etc etc. This is for a brewery that continues to sell all or most of its beer direct from the brewery and is generally packed Friday/weekends. Anybody experience any other brewery threads w/a bad vibe now or in the past? Anything near as bad as Trillium is now?

Maybe bot as bad as the current Trillium thread and sorry to throw this out there without a link (maybe someone can help) but I seem to recall a 3 Floyds thread where they were the topic of some pretty heavy criticism regarding the treatment of patrons.

Scott, what is your personal opinion here? Do you think that Trillium has 'degraded' with changes in the brewing process? Can you please educate me on exactly what changes were made and the brewers motivations for making those changes?
I am not intimately experienced in what is going on in the Trillium discussions in the New England forum but based upon the summary of topics you listed I am not aware of any other breweries that have (or are) experiencing this sort of BA 'backlash". Do you have an opinion on why Trillium is doing so well from a business perspective given this negativity?

    Cheers!

3 chiefs brewing thread over in pacific appears largely to have been started by haters for haters. It's pretty entertaining

Jack - they changed the yeast of their core pales/IPAs for some reason -- apparently from Conan to London 3 or vice versa -- not really clear why. This happened sometime last year before the November wage/trub/tequila handle fiasco. Folks surmise there must be a business/profit reason for the change. I've had a few like FPPA that I thought weren't quite what they used to be -- but in general I'm still liking most of there IPAs...and their pastry stouts continue to be generally stellar save a few disasters that the detractors have pounced on (Chocolate Goodness...initial tap pints looked like poop -- or worse). Perhaps the wage issue and rumors of a financial backer and continuing growth plans (a farmhouse set up in CT) have idealists (best word I can think of) thinking they've sold out. Only in it for the money. Their primary location in the hottest growth area of the city still has them as the darling of the under 35 young professionals that are continuing to flock to the brewery. Most of those folks are unaware of the BA backlash.

Hoof Hearted was the 'darling' brewery in central Ohio going back 2-5 years ago, but I recently discovered in their Great Lakes thread after not reading it for awhile that a level of disparagement has shown up that surprised me. It sounds like it may be caused by a relative few expressing their negative opinions about the brewery, but I don't see this brewery being recommended for visits by inquiring travelers nearly as much as it used to be. It had always been a 'must-visit' in those threads. Unfortunately I can't impart any personal experience to know what is the truth.

    Have you been lately?

I was in Boston on business in late January and stayed literally a block away.

The placed was comfortably full on Thursday pm (late-preclosing) when I strolled by and there was a line out the door on a Friday at 6.

Someone invited me to go there for a bite and will have to say the food was quite good and not overpriced for what is the most vibrant/up and coming district in Boston.

The practices described in the article seem a mix of truth and hater diatribe. Having never been, I wanted to see the new brewery/pub/restaurant in the Seaport district. Still not sure where I stand on it all--initially was very disappointed in what I read regarding employee treatment but the folks working there seem very happy, upbeat.

I meant fans have been scared away from the thread....not the breweries or restaurant.

    I see.

I went back and peaked at it for the first in a bit and --sigh....

Well that thread was/is getting just a bit overdone. People getting mean. I would have not revisited other than your post to see just where it had gone and have no plans to return.

Yeah, I recently did a tour of OH a few weeks ago, and OH forum posters were bashing Hoof Hearted. I've had 2-3 of their brews over last 2 years and found them very good/excellent. Not sure what its all about.

I find it amusing when someone who hates something so bad that they spend so much time complaining about it or telling people how bad it is. If it’s so bad then the product will speak for itself.

If there is something or brewery I don’t like for whatever reason I don’t waste my time complaining about it, I just move on.

The Mikerphone and More threads in the Great Lakes forums aren't complete shit-shows...but naysayers abound.

Mikerphone has become a bit of an in-joke among Chicago folks, as we blame them for everything "wrong" with craft beer (tongues firmly in cheeks).

So much so that the Mikerphone "blame" is occasionally referenced in other breweries' threads.

But seriously, Mikerphone is THE source of anything bad related to flavorings, styles, formats, pricing, availability, release strategy, and events in close proximity to other beer fests.

This type of posting is pretty much absent from the NW forum, save the occasional chunk of snark for Grape Lotion.

I just think it’s a bummer that trillium beers don’t taste the same as they used to; they are so thick and saccharine sweet it’s a struggle to get through a can of even something so iconic as DDH congress street . I don’t know why they would make a change in their flagship beers like this and think it’s better

One of the old Toppling Goliath Appreciation threads had a lot of mischief occurrences; however, it was heavily moderated, and most of it is no longer present. In recollection, there wasn’t much discussion about the “Appreciation” towards the tail end or in subsequent threads that were possibly nuked

I've made this point on the thread itself, but people aren't angry at Trillium because they don't like them, they're angry at Trillium because they do like them. I mean I don't want to speak for everyone, but it's certainly the case for me, and it's also just the way the world works. Think about how much cultural infamy that bad endings to good TV shows carry. Lost ended like ten years ago and people are still complaining about that shit.

The Trillium thread vibes are bad, but it's not because some outside group of Trillium haters decided to take up residence there or something. It's the same group of Trillium-liking people it's always been, it's just that a lot of them are bummed about the current state of the brewery.

Great point.. I’d also like to remind folks that the whole purpose of a discussion forum like this is to share opinions of all sorts- we don’t all need to agree and everyone doesn’t need to worship and praise every brewery in the name of “good vibez”... Just because someone has a different (and maybe negative) opinion doesn’t equate to bad vibes
