It's a dirty, thankless job, but someone had to do it. We salute your sacrifice.

You shut your mouth when you talk about Spaten.

I know, right? But I wouldn't say it if there weren't already some creeping doubts . I'll have to make a point to check out their regular stuff soon, but last year's O'fest did seem like it lost a step from previous years.

I'll agree with you. I drank Opitmator all through high school and it's not what it used to be.

To be honest, I didn't like it that much 12 years ago.

The dopplebock selection in south louisiana was pretty slim pickens 15 years ago.

In Casper, it's STILL slim pickens. A campfire wouldn't help.

I thought it was still on point -- comparatively speaking. Same as 10 years ago? I'd have to open one of the collectors bottles I have in storage... then again...

FWIW -- Spaten Premium is still my basic house beer, as long as I can find it. And yeah, I definitely feel it's lost some luster since they stopped decoction mashing sometime back, but I still find it fresher and cheaper than HB Helles (which isn't decoction mashed anymore either).

If we was really smart peoples, we could of just read the initial press release:

The Paulaner Hefe-Weizen is the #1 selling wheat beer in Germany, and a favorite around the world. This traditional unfiltered Hefe-Weizen is naturally cloudy and silky gold under a really strong head of foam. At first mouthful, some will detect a hint of banana aroma. Fine palates perceive trace of mango and pineapple and the balance between sweet and bitter. Overall, beer connoisseurs appreciate the incomparable flavor of Paulaner Hefe-Weizen for its perfectly balanced mix of aromas and refreshing taste. It’s a superb biergarten or outdoor drinking bier.

Well, I drank Dinker-Acker Dark through high school, and I'm pretty sure that I did..

Well I drank Ballantine XXX occasionally on Sundays for the family meal. My palate loved the hops even way back then. N'uck n'uck.

Can't assume -- he could have downed one and passed out.

I remember when I first found EKU 28 as a college freshman... wasn't pretty.

Not really, we drank it because it was stronger than Coors/Miller/bud

I had a friend in high school who's dad served in Germany and had acquired a taste for German beer. We would sometimes steal his Dinkel-Acker Darks and marvel at how terrible they tasted and wonder why German beer was so well regarded

It was the complete opposite for me, love at first taste, and I couldn't get why nobody else thought so .

At least your friend's dad's stash was relatively safe. :sunglasses:

Jersey must'a been rife with imports. Only dark beer imports we ever saw was Heineken, Beck's, and St. Pauli Girl.

Of course, we had regionals like Huber and Rhinelander (they were once separate) making dark German styles, so maybe the importers didn't think our area was lucrative.

I sort of feel that way about Hofbrau Hefe. I don't buy into Weihestephaner being the apex of Hefeweizen. Plenty of competitors
