That's a true "Stubby" bottle? Never knew they were used in Ireland. Labatt-brewed Guinness Extra Stout for their domestic market once came in a Stubby when that was the standard Canadian returnable beer bottle:

but I'd have thought by that period most markets typically got the Guinness stouts bottled by Guinness in slight variations to the same basic "Select" shaped bottle, like the one above (Jack's #131 post) -which is "stubbier" than the "standard" US long neck, I guess - but not a Stubby .

You know, once something gets promoted to nick-nack status it tends to stay there .

and that one dates back to the year ... well, when
the nickel deposit = 1 candy bar.

And the F&M Schaefer Brewing Co. was the seventh largest in the US.

Nah - what do you think I drank on my 18th 19th 21st birthday?
(Wait, what was the legal age then?)

    Hah!

Wait, isn't that you with the jug at age 3, or so? And you held on to it for 15 years just to be your inaugural bottle? What did that taste like?

What did a decade and a half old Schaefer taste like? What else?
    Cardboard!

Wait...this was a Paulaner can thread? I picked up a four pack of the original lager with a January (2019:wink:) can date. I've never had the beer before because I never bother to check German bottles because they are always old here. Coming soon to NBS

Yeah, finding fresh German brewed beer is an 'event' and worthy of further discussion!

    Lucky you!!

    Cheers!

Just finished my review over on NBS. Let's just say I'm a fan...

As an added bonus, my pricing was $2 less for 4 x 500mL cans than the 6 x 330mL bottles for the same total volume.
    Happy hunting!

Not nearly as old, but I still have the champagne bottle I popped when the Red Sox won in 2004, and the black label Duvel 750 mL bottle from that same year when I first got into better beer.

Wish I had a Duvel glass then...trying to pour that thing into a regular water glass didn't work out too well...

Were you old enough to possess champagne in 2004? (joking)

Found some of the new Paulaner Original cans north of the border in Wisconsin. $6 a 4 pack, .5l cans.

Interesting coincidence that they were packaged in January, 2019 -- just like the last 12-pack of Spaten Premium I purchased. I only wish there was a date on the plastic wrap Paulaner is using -- makes for a gamble (but I knew these had to be fairly new by way of this thread).

Rather tinny, metallic taste drinking from the can... I'm joking! Can't you people take a joke?!

Great looking; clear, light gold with a soft white head that holds up well. Herbal hops and light DMS in the nose. Lightly bready malts with the herbal hops in balance with a touch of bitterness. Light body and soft mouthfeel.

Other than being a little thin in the malt richness, a textbook Helles. It even tastes cleaner than the last bottle of Paulaner I had -- I always get a heavy dryness from Paulaner's lagers, but this one has more of an herbal quality than an attenuation dryness. Canning? Freshness? Dunno, but good stuff.

I recall being able to see the dates on the bottom of the cans through the plastic, maybe I'm making this up?

I really liked the Helles a lot. The Hefeweizen was very "meh" for me, so far I've had two cans, one on a completely fresh palate. Flavors were quite muted, it was odd, as I recall really liking Paulaner's Hefeweizen in the past.

    Both were canned in January.
