Here's an odd one on several levels...

Brourewij de Molen 'Rasputin' / 'Disputin' from 2009

    4.11/5 rDev 0%
    look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

Deep space black; very little head, thin and fizzy, ultimately leaving a slight ring of foam around the rim of the beer. Rich, roasty, mildly boozy aroma; cocoa. Rich cocoa and mild booze flavor; bitter with some aromatic spiciness. Heavy body; slick and silky on the palate; mainly dry mouthfeel overall.

This beer has aged well. The appearance (head-wise) is a little lacking, but the taste and feel are awesome for an old beer. The original label states "The beer will be good for 25 years If kept Cool and dark". In addition, it reads "This batch 1030 Bottles from 75cl".

This bottle has conflicting labeling. The apparent original label has the name as "Rasputin', brewed on 13/14 February 2009 and a bottling date of 17n March 2009 with bottle number 510. The paste on label over the original name lists the name 'Disputin' with hand-written numbering of 208/1170. There was an apparent legal dispute between Brouerij de Molen and North Coast (the paste on label has the following verbiage: This stout used to be called 'Rasputin', but the people who make 'Old Rasputin' in California thought you were too dumb to tell the two products apart, and threatened to sue us for trademark infringement. Think about that when you're looking for a way to spend your hard-earned beer money."
    ---------------
Back in the day, Brouweriz de Molen and North Coast apparently had a dispute about the name "Rasputin". A legal question of trademark.

The apparent original label has this beer brewed 13/14 March 2009 and bottled 17 March 2009, and (supposedly) bottle 510 of 1030. The paste-on label has the name change plus hand-written 208/1170 (which I assume is the bottle number of x-number of bottles).

Well, regardless of circumstances, this beer has aged well and tastes fantastic.

I didn't see this variety of 'Rasputin' / 'Disputin' with the ABV of 10.7%, so I've added it to the BA beer database.

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

Another long weekend done at work, and getting ready for another long week at work. So looking forward to my next day off (well, the one I know of for sure), Easter. I'm probably crazy, but seriously considering heading out to visit my friend in North Carolina for that weekend. I'd have to get out of work, somehow, but it is really tempting. Only time will tell if I can pull it off.

    But it's time for beer.
And this beer is messing me up, so if I mess up here, please forgive me.

Mother's Brewing Company - MILF Rye Barrel Release. 11% ABV.

This is the final beer that the amazing @jdell15 so kindly sent to me in the NBS BIF #8.

I'm a fan of MILF, and not just the feminine kind. This is the third MILF beer I've had, and it also knocked my socks off. Just so beautiful pouring, and it tastes amazing, as my, semi sober, review will show.

    Review:

    4.47/5 rDev +4.9%
    look: 5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Pours like motor oil - thick and black. 1 finger brown head. The head retention is downright amazing, considering the higher ABV. As the head dissipates, it clings a bit to the side of the glass. Nice lacing.
The nose has notes of the barrel - I get some caramel, some chocolate. It smells great, but was expecting a bit stronger nose.
Taste - Woah! A bit smooth and mellow for a fraction of a second. It then just goes full flavor. I get caramel first. I do get a slight nutty flavor. On the backside I get a nice chocolate with caramel finish. The caramel sticks around the whole time.
There really isn't much of an alcohol burn at all. The body is thick as expected, which is a lot.
This is a solid stout. I am a fan of MILF, and Mother's Brewing created an amazing beer here.

Messed up badly after this beer, so I'm done. Enjoy NBS everyone.

    Final new beer for today...

    The review:
12oz canned 2/26/19 (26 days ago) poured into a Taxman snifter at just above fridge temp 8.5% ABV 20 IBU. The beer pours bright medium brown in color with fizzy light brown head. The head recedes to a thin island of bubbles and ring around the glass. The aroma is oak and vanilla first with bourbon following along with some dark fruit. The taste is dark fruit and soft malt followed by vanilla, coconut, oak and mild bourbon ending with gentle bitterness and lingering coconut & vanilla. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with just less than medium carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, very good to excellent. This is a really nice version of Deduction. The barrel really adds dimension that the base beer lacks without overwhelming the beer with bourbon.

I'm glad I didn't sit on this one. Not much bourbon which is fine by me. Love the range of Belgians from Taxman and their willingness to experiment. Cheers all!

After trying this year's version of one of my local favorites (Barrel Aged Lucubrator), I went with the newest of the aged family from one of my favorite local breweries:

    Occidental
    Barrel Aged Dunkel Lager

Deep garnet red with wonderful clarity. The smoothed lightly tanned froth above indicates barrel influence. This beer looks warm, unpretentious and inviting.

Caramel and oak compete for supremacy, although that supremacy is lazy and docile. Herbal and floral tradition is expressed in the finish.

An unexpected surprise in the flavor. Apples both tart green and red sweet are blended and coated in that caramel with just a touch of spice, dried oak, and an ever so soured red grape. All of this is encapsulated by an even keeled bready base.

Light and crisp with a smooth and ever so slightly tart finish. This beer is increasingly easy to drink as it warms.

Somehow, this beer transports me to a perceived historic past. I can see this being the origin of the Dunkel Lager. Oak influence, slightly tart, easy to drink. The epitome of a night time session beer in the frigid old country nights.

I gave Barrel Aged Dunkel a rating of 3.99.

    Prost.

Amazing dessert stout. Insane lasting creamy head retention/thick soapy lacing the whole glass. Aromas and flavors of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, vanilla, cream, toffee, brown sugar, roasted nuts, fudge, toasted biscuit, spicy rye, and dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, raisin, prune, fig, date, smoke, charcoal, leather, tobacco, wood, herbal, grass, pepper, pine, and yeast earthiness. Slight booze in the aromas as it warms, but not overwhelming. Light pine, herbal, grassy, woody, peppery hop; and roast/charcoal bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and full body; very creamy, silky, velvety, bready malts; some sticky hops and chalky char/roast in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering hop/char bitter dryness; no cloying, acrid, astringency. Mild increasing warmth of 12%, no lingering booze. Insanely rich rye/oats/malt complexity, with cocoa/vanilla flavors; great earthy hop presence/balance against sweetness, and restrained fruity yeast notes. Can't wait to try the Coffee version, probably this week. 4.41

    Threes Logical Conclusion

@cavedave , I’m transitioning from the Industrial Arts lager to this Industrial Arts ale. Oops, I mean Threes ale. This beer is contract brewed at Industrial Arts. In a previous NBS thread, I was talking about having Threes Vliet (Industrial Arts brews this too these days) at the Threes brewery taproom and wondering where that particular glass of kegged beer was brewed. The answer is at Industrial Arts. Threes actually has to go through distribution to get their beer to serve it at their brewery. Vliet feels inconsistent to me, but at times it feels like a great lager.

This beer was a serious downgrade for me after Spring Landscape, but it isn’t necessarily the beer’s fault - I just wanted more Spring Landscape rather than a NEIPA... and this is a NEIPA. Nevermind that it’s classified as an “American IPA” here... these things are just waaay messier than folks want to believe.

This beer is opaque, yellow/white/golden/whatever-it’s-really-called grapefruit juice-ish in appearance. Smell is strongly grapefruit too. Putting the beer to one’s lips is a letdown like many other NEIPAs. The fruity qualities in the aroma get dulled way down in the taste by a chalky flavor that surfaces. Underripe peach and a hint of papaya join the party though along with some soft bitterness. Not a future repeat purchase.

Yeah, I loved me some Emerald Rye!

To my mind and memory, this one is similar to that one only in that both are highly hopped and feature a fair amount of rye malt.

I would add that the Stag Series Rye IPA is a bit easier drinking than Emerald Rye, also having a lighter body and a much more traditional (inasmuch as the Micro Craft Beer Era can be said to have more modern and/or contemporary traditions) American IPA character.

If you’re into rye beers, give this one. try!

That is a really great beer, I don't know why everyone hates it. I thought Punishment was similarly impressive. I had 2015 batches for both, which were apparently not as aggressive on the peppers as the first batch, but was still pretty intense. I have a high tolerance for heavy heat anyways lol. Age probably helped mellow and integrate a lot of flavors as well. Would like to try one fresh with the full Double Bastard hop intensity going on. Bitterness was hiding behind the pepper spice.

Getting in one quick one on here tonight. Had a pretty heavy weekend on a guys fishing trip so giving my liver a bit of a break. I was able to introduce some friends that are primarily into hops to BA sours and stouts. Most enjoyed them all although a couple realized they weren't into the tooth enamel stripping sours. I made it almost to where we were camping(2 1/2 hours away) and realized I had forgotten to load one of the boxes of beer I was taking as well as my tent. This one from @jhavs was in that box.so I'm enjoying it now.

Pours a darker golden orange with a finger of head that went away fairly quicky.
Smells of citrus, tropical fruits, a bit floral and maybe a hint of pine.
Taste follows with lots of mango and citrus.
Medium body with good carb levels. Smooth with a touch of alcohol present in the end.
Overall another tasty one from River Roost!

Sticky Hands from Block 15. A new beer and brewery tick for me. The look is in the picture and that huge head hung around for awhile. Aroma is Pine resin, and hops like a big west coast dipa. Hold your horses hops cuz there’s some malt back there too. Taste is more of the same, but not overly aggressive on the hops. Mouthfeel was kinda unexpected as it was soft but sticky. Like a perfect blend of west and east coast style. Overall this is an awesome beer and I’d buy a bunch if they were near me.

Pretty good basic porter, without any adjuncts . At least none mentioned.
Almost black, with a decent head, though it doesn't last long.
Smells like cola , nutty roasted malt & cocoa. Some bitterness on the finish.
Taste is similar to aroma, plus some old/charred wood.
Feel is light-medium, with some creamy feel punctuated by some prickly carbonation.
Overall , a good basic porter. Enjoyable , but probably won't revisit as I can get similar, & maybe slightly better, for 60% of the price.

Thanks to @cjgiant for kicking things off! My New Big Ass Beer Sunday beer is a Barrel-Aged stout from Blindman Brewing from Lacombe, Alberta.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours a super dark brown with nice light brown head that sticks around for a while. Nose is incredibly inviting and aromatic! Super huge notes of figs, toffee, candy, vanilla. Taste is one of the best I have head. Wow! Blown away big time. To me, this tastes a bit more like a barrel-aged English barleywine. Candy, cherries, raisins, figs, nuts, charred wood, and big notes of caramel. The bourbon comes through really nicely. There is a bit of alcohol bite, and the mouthfeel is nice and robust. Chewy and viscous. Man, this is a winner all around. I never would have guessed a beer like this would come out of Lacombe.

Next new beer is a breakfast stout from Outcast, out of Calgary. It's an all-Alberta day!

Poured from fridge temp from a can (canned a couple of weeks ago). This one is brewed with maple syrup and coffee from North Carolina. Pours motor oil black with very little head. The nose is FULL of coffee (extremely nice) and maple. Not a ton of other notes coming through. Taste is slightly bitter, due to the coffee ground notes. Not overly complex, but really straightforward and tasty. The maple comes through, and bit of roasted malts. Mouthfeel is pretty creamy, but a tad lighter due to the lower ABV. Overall, an easy drinking breakfast stout.

Hola fellow late night new beer bullshitters, and thanks to @vabeerguy for this gem. No date on can but I believe it’s about a month old. Nose is fresh bright melon. Taste is more of the same and fresh pineapple, candied orange, grapefruit, mango and lemon zest with a full creamy mouthfeel and smooth finish. Overall a 4.5 range or better. My first Triple Crossing and hope there are more to come. Paired with Fringe on Blu-ray. Highly recommend all three.

Excellent review. I did wonder how much of the honey bread impression was suggested by the given style on the can, but it was full of those strangely wonderful undernotes that make honey more than a sweet taste. The bright flavor you mention is what sealed the deal, that rich clean grain flavor was just so tasty. Second can I tasted a bit more herbal bitter in the finish than the first, probably due to my having a cheese sandwich beforehand. Such a surprise to be as blown away by a beer like this, but perhaps it is a factor of my expectations not being high for a bock. Will be looking for that Einbecker! You made it sound amazing.
