    Morning glory espresso stout
    ...solid black appearance
..light carbonation with about a medium body. At times it felt a little thin and perhaps too much carbonation
...aroma is espresso, roasted malt, black coffee, dark and milk chocolate
...taste is fairly deep and rich, plenty of espresso followed by roasted malt. The mix of milk and dark chocolate really enhances the flavor and finish
..overall it's not world class but still a very flavorful espresso stout[IMG]anthropologist yearly salary

I’ve been lurking here for quite a while and decided to join in the fun today. I wanted to start with a new to me style as well.

    Wheinstephaner Vitus - Weizenbock.

L - Poured from a 500 ml bottle. Hazy golden straw colored with a frothy white head.

A - Sweet bready malt, banana and clove.

T - Follows the nose with wheat, fruit and yesst.

F - Creamy and full bodied. Smooth and easy drinking.

O - Outstanding beer. I was expecting a lot from this beer and Wheinstephaner delivered.

Thanks for today’s start Doc. I enjoy your musings!

Bearded Iris Brewing Co., Nashville, TN - “V. Fudge w/Strawberries” an Imperial Oatmeal Stout w/chocolate, lactose and vanilla:

A rocky tan and cola colored head sits atop an opaque, almost murky dark brown body poured at 56 degrees; quick cap; incomplete ring; tiny island of micro dot bubbles; no legs. 3.75

Barest hint of vanilla nose and nothing else. 3.5

Flavors of chocolate fudge and Coca Cola; something fruity sweet...possibly strawberry...not tasting the vanilla; cola-like finish. 3.5

Zippy carbonation; light body; somewhat silky feel. 3.5

Overall, everything about this beer screams “punt!”; butt ugly - hard to look at poopy brown color and drink; almost no aroma;kinda tastes like Coke with some cherry Tootsie Pops thrown in; over carbonated; and the lactose feels weird with all the carbonation. 3.5

Canned 12/11/18...maybe this beer was better before, but not so much now...

Enjoy your Sunday, and (for my little sister) “Go ‘Cats!”

Happy Sunday, NBS crew! Had a bunch of people over yesterday for some deck drinking on our first warm day of the year in these parts. Today I’m recovering from the crazy sunburn I acquired. My pasty winter skin was destroyed by this foreign object called sunlight.

Today’s first new beer was provided by @thisischuck01 . I’ve only ever had Monkish as part of a collab with Other Half, and this beer continues that pattern.

    Synopsis:
More bitter and less sweet than most OH DIPAs. Lots of tangerine and pineapple in this one, but those tastes only last briefly, being followed by a wave of earthy hops and alcohol. Great nose and body. Just wish the booze was a less prominent player. Thanks again Charles!

Good review. Golden Pheasant was a staple that I picked up on my way to South Dakota for our annual Pheasant hunt. Wish I could get it here but that will have to wait until I relocate to an area with a more developed beer culture.

Pale gold color with good white cap and lacing.

Slightly tart slightly sour scent with something like ripe yellow fruit in the background.

Taste is less sharp and sour than the scent. It's rounded, fuller and has a fruit like quality like very ripe Anjou pears, which is to say rich without being heavy. I also notice a citrus like quality that just hints of lemon but provides a brightness to offset the fruit. It has almost desert wine like qualities who's flavors are handed out with a light touch but the whole approaches lusciousness. Almost heady with an unnoticeable 9.0 % ABV.

    Full body with balancing carbonation.

Drinks like a wine, I kid you not. A Vin du Pays perhaps with more body and higher quality than Vin Ordinaire. Darned good stuff no matter how you want to describe it.

Happy Sunday NBS players. A pretty overcast and grey day here on the island with rain on the way and temps sitting in the 40's. Spent a nice Saturday in the city drinking way to many good ipa's, and after a little brewery haul, I have a ton of new beers on hand. A pretty lazy Sunday, on the way, with plenty of beer, food, and Mets baseball. Hopefully, they get the brooms out for the god damn nats.

My first new beer today is Light Work Ale, a hoppy pale ale, from Greenport Harbor. It features magnum, centennial, and citra hops- along with pilsner and wheat malts. The brew checks in at 4.8% abv and has a 3/19/19 canning date. I had to add it to the data base and I will try and get an official review posted as well.

A golden and straw yellow color, on the pour, with semi-clarity and a nice white cap of foam. The nose is all citrus. Tangy and hoppy upfront, on the initial few sips, with a smooth flow and slightly bitter finish. Crisp, clean, and light bodied. I get decent citrus notes of lemon, orange, and grapefruit. The malt hides in the back and it seems to really showcase the hop profile. Despite the light feel it stays far away from being watery.

Overall, not bad/not great. Its very easy drinking and falls right in line with the session ipa style of a founders all day etc. I'm in the 3.5/3.8 range here,

    a) pours a hazed honey body with bright white head that last and laces.
    s) As usual, on a caramel base with cracker malt, float lemon, grapfruit with some pine and floral hops.
    t) Tart grapefruit and lemon upfront. Bitey / bitter astringent IBU of 80. SWEETER, calmer as it warms.
    f) Always nice mid-level mouth feel.

Thrilled to be the 1st review of one of the best of ODub: Jarrylo (pronounced Jar-ril-low) is named after Jarilo, the Slavic god of fertility and springtime. The site writes: "banana, pear, spice aroma translates perfectly to Pale Ales, Saisons and Belgians."=
More florals in DIPAs, this ode to Connecticut Yankees from Jersey Shore, hits the mark.
The hero here is Jarrylo hybrid hops.
The trend is toward florals and softer fruit notes in DIPAs we see from Ballast Point, Dogshead, Carton, etc.
As brewer notes: "tiny, leafy punches of orange, pear and tart berry notes"
These temper and dont overwhelm the solid dank, resiny core of 077xx.
Another god nectar. Fresh on tap at the tasting room in 07716 on 2-3-18.
a_ Mostly clear but for wisp of chill haze, o-dub gold, with fervent head that laces well. 4.2
BACK at BREWER this beer does not disappoint!

Amazing bouquet on this PB stout, more grass, flowershop, barn than Peanut butter. Still tasting carefully to follow the aroma trail.
    A) All one expects of a stout, beige head, lace, last, stickage.
    S) Still trying to figure out - gotta love an aroma that stumps us after so many beer tastes. Bravo.
    T) Chocolate, Peanut butter oil, crunchy, toasted, crushed nuts. Weird vanilla, flower and spice cabinet additions. While the flowers are lain on deeply charred driftwood, seaweed and hops.
    f) Chalky, never cloying despite the power.
    o) A bursting flavor that needs to be tasted blind vs other strong stouts and PB stouts.

Never disappointed by sixpoint. Better than its cousin Hi-res. Powerful. Alcoholic.
Liquor-like and one of most original Imperial IPAs I have I enjoyed.
A: Like all six point a looker. Dense head, lacing, retention, clear amber body. Nearly perfect.
    S. sharp, w bit of tropical sunshine, behind the hop orange rind, marmalade front, Juicy like the taste.
    T. Hip caramel candy. Hop candy. Heads up the sunny Cliff where hops twine the fence around the citrus grove and pines bow in the salty, briny breeze. Oily, dense, flavor packed.
    F. Sweet clean liquor. How could a nectar be so bitter and sweet at once? Paradox. Love the brewer. This may be their best. A new fave. A new best 3IPA?
The 11% sneaks up on you. Paradoxically good, but only if you go slow.

Lots of good discussion points there to unpack.

Let’s address geography first. Bavaria borders the Czech Republic and Slovakia is further east – south of Poland and north of Hungary.

“What’s the practical difference between the styles?” I think you are asking what is the difference between a German Pilsner and a Bohemian (Czech) Pilsner?

Big disclaimer! The below are my opinions on this style difference topic:

A German Pilsner is typically lighter in color (e.g., straw colored), has a drier finish (i.e., a lower final gravity) and will feature a variety of noble hops (e.g., Tettnang, Hallertauer Mittelfruh, Spalt, Saaz).

A Bohemian Pilsner can be light in color (e.g., straw) but could also be darker (e.g., deep golden color). They typically have more body and an off-dry finish (i.e., a higher final gravity in comparison to a German Pilsner) and will solely feature Saaz hops.

“Would something along the lines of Trauger be close to a Bohemian beer?” Below is a description of Trauger Pilsner from the brewery’s website:

“Our Pilsner is assertively hopped with Hallertau and Tettnanger noble hops and has a cracker-like malt backbone that finishes crisp and dry coming in at 4.8% ABV.”

Given the choice of hops and "dry" aspect detailed above I personally would categorize Trauger Pilsner as a German Pilsner.

    Cheers!

My new beer for today is Andrea Doria from Dubco...
A 9% abv imperial porter aged in whiskey barrels... Very stout-ish porter - full-bodied and richly flavored with roasty chocolaty malts - the whiskey barrel adds lighter wood tones and a light alcoholic vapor... Sweet up front but dries on the finish... Suggestions of espresso coffee beans and wood char keep it nicely bittered... Really good stuff...

    Cheers...

Starting my lazy Sunday with this one from @kemoarps. [IMG]
32 ounce crowler of North Potion Berliner sent from Kemoarps in a LIF. Arrived cold, immediately put in my fridge. Split with Mrs Strohme2 into two nonic pints.
2 different colored pours. First is crystal clear, second is slightly hazy. The one on the left appears brighter as it was closer to the window. Both are golden yellow. Just a quick burst of head that left as soon as it appeared. I won’t knock the appearance too much as it was a crowler and went a little longer than was best.
Aromas of lemon zest, lime zest, my wife says it smells “sweet and fruity”. Some light barnyard noted too and lemon curd.
Taste is lemon, sweet citrus, unsweetened yogurt smoothie, cookie crumbs (that’s right!). It’s not quite grainy, definitely not doughy, but somewhere in the middle. A Sweet lemon cookie. SweeTart level tartness for the finish. Just fine for me.
Crisp and light body. Carbonation may be lacking but that’s probably due to the age on the crowler.
This would be a nice summer crusher on the deck, by the pool, after mowing the lawn. Today, I’m enjoying it in the kitchen, looking out on the fresh snow covered deck wishing it was summer. Thanks Kestrel!

    Happy NBS everybody!
It is gray and dreary here in Montreal and I am taking advantage of my last totally free Sunday for a few months. I will be out of town next weekend hanging at a cabin up north and the week after that I start doing Sunday tours of the city and its fine beer establishments for the summer. I can't really complain, though, as the job involves beer, beer education and history, three things I love. It is also tons of fun and only takes up part of my day. Still, there is something about not having to do anything on a Sunday that I really appreciate. Maybe it is centuries of religious society laying dormant in my brain, maybe I'm just lazy. Who knows?
With that in mind I am making the most of this Sunday off. I'm brewing a beer, cooking a bit and hopefully having a couple with you folks; the first of which is a new local one. The Cherry Péché Mortel variant from this year's release.
I have had some of their fruited PM's that were really duds (peach, seriously?!?!). Additionally, I kind of hate the general idea of it as a dyed-in-the-wool curmudgeon. fruit flavors and stouts can go either way for me, and I have yet to have a good one that was better than it would be without the fruit edition (if that makes sense). That said, I recently had a cellared bottle of the raspberry variant and was pleasantly surprised. It was actually a pretty nice combo. The one downside was that raspberry flavor is a little delicate and tart next to coffee. I have a feeling cherry might be bold and rich enough to pull it off. Let's see....
It pours pitch black with a respectable head. Maybe not quite as luscious- looking as some of the other Péchés, but nice nonetheless with very impressive lacing. The aroma is chocolatey with some coffee and a pleasant a nutty sweetness. The flavor is more coffee-like with sweet and tart cherry flavors and milk chocolate malt flavor. Like a dark chocolate covered cherry. It is fairly drinkable with a slightly astringent feel from the combination of all of it. It is a good beer but I think it could jump to being a very good beer if the coffee were left out. Yes, I know it would no longer be a PM, but the coffee seems to out-compete the cherries.

    Here is my official scorecard.

See you all again in a bit, hopefully.
    Santé!

    Synopsis:
Unusual. The look and smell screams traditional ipa, with caramel malt and citrus/grassy hops. The taste, though, is a strange hodgepodge of sweet citrus, caramel, and grass, smothered in mild queso dip. Getting lots of cheese on this one, especially as it warms. Why do Southeast ipas often taste savory to me? Maybe it’s the water. In any case, this is enjoyable despite its weirdness. Thanks again John!
