It looks like your pic indicates that that beer is two years old. Not exactly "fresh," but it's all relative given the "best by.":slight_smile:

I too found that beer to have quite a nice hop presence. I appreciate you highlighting this. While it might be very different than previous versions of that beer made at other breweries, the notion that it wouldn't comfortably be called an English barley wine illuminates that we put too much stock in the line between the two.

The tricky part is also not getting lightstruck bottles. Buying by the case helps, but it would take a law to make me buy it by the case.

..appearance is solid black. Very light carbonation with at least an average body.has a slight oily creamy feel
..aroma is fresh brewed low bitterness espresso and roasted malt with some earthy wood . There's also black coffee and sugar
...taste follows aroma with espresso being forward. Earthy, wood, roasted malt all come together to make a very flavorful stout
.. overall it's a much better than average stout with an excellent smooth silky feel[IMG]e85 fuel near me

If I read the bottle correctly, this one is under a year old - I'll double check for my next entry and confirm/deny.

    New Beer Sunday: Belgian Saison

Afternoon NBSers with a heads up for fans of lightly funky Saisons.

This afternoon’s new beer is the Goose Island Gillian with a bit more than 2 years of bottle age.

My review, subject to revision until I finish the 2nd bottle, can be found here.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/user/beers/?ba=drtth

The aromas/flavors have some tartness, some strawberry, and some light floral character. In the background there’s a bit of barnyard funk, a touch of sweetness and a bit of peppery spice, but no bitterness. This is an enjoyable and complex beer in which everything gets to play since none of the flavors dominate any of the others and each shows in it’s own way. I look forward to be having another and may even go buy a few more bottles to cellar.

    Cheers, all!

    Lawson's Chinooker'd

This is a familiar brewery around NBS these days. I really enjoy the Lawson's beers that come out of Two Roads even though it's currently hip to say the opposite. Out of these currently more available Vermont brews, I featured Maple Nipple here one week and I thought that beer was unpleasant and ham-fisted. Despite that, I wanted to try this offering. Glad I did. It's wonderful.

It's a teensy-touch hazy (in the genuine sense... not in the "let's call opaque NEIPAs hazy" sense). I'm probably a big outlier here, because I don't get citrus and pine as much as herbal. For me, this is confidently herbal and it's really enjoyable to have an IPA like this in the current climate. It teeters on the edge of being unpleasantly vegetal but manages to avoid it admirably thanks to its sharp brightness of flavor. The bitter finish is quite nice. I haven't enjoyed an IPA this much since Sierra's Resilience (which I thought was terrific even though the conversation around it didn't go there). Cheers.

That is indeed a consideration as well. The 6-pack I purchased was just sitting on a shelf in a BIG warehouse type building which is (fortunately in this instance) poorly illuminated by fluorescent lights 20+ feet above. Luckily for me these beers were not lightstruck. Perhaps in a differing retail outlet they would?

If I could be assured that a case of Golden Pheasant was fresh (e.g., I owned a 'decoder ring') I would be willing to buy it (after my homebrewed stash of BoPils was fully consumed:wink:).

    Cheers!

I’m always leery of words like decent and solid. Like some code for mediocre or dull average.

    Synopsis:
Not usually a fan of Nelson, but here it is implemented well. The “dirty gym socks” taste is still there, but is minimized. Instead, this beer tastes like a dank orange vape. Would be a hit with the younger craft beer crowd I would guess. I’m enjoying it, but the Citra one (#2?) is still my favorite. Thanks for continuing to send me this series John!

This one is my favorite of theirs. I too like it as a nice alternative for NEIPA's I typically consume.

Happy NBS, everyone... and thanks to @lordofthewiens for kicking it off at the stroke of midnight (almost).

Today is a new beer from one of my locals ...

Badger Hill Brewing Tiny Tanks Hazy IPA
The brewer does not call this NE-style, and it does not taste like it, either.

1/2 inch white head, leaving plenty of nice-looking lacing behind. Some visible bubbles through the hazy yellow-orange body (hazy like a keller pils or hefe, not turbid at all).

Aroma of citrus and pine; classic American IPA aroma, with a touch of other tropical fruits, perhaps mango. Richer flavor than the aroma; mix of several fruit flavors, just a bit of piney bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. Brewer calls this a hazy IPA, and that is an apt description.

Nice body on the initial roll across the tongue.

It is hazy, and it is a nicely done IPA, with more complex flavors, and just a touch of bittering. Well done, Badger Hill.

How was the mouthfeel of this beer? Would you describe it as being "soft"? Did the term of "juicy" ever occur to you with this beer?

    Cheers!

I heard from Maria about three weeks ago. She said she was doing OK. I asked her if she would like to guest host sometime (as Dave did for Craig), and she declined.
