Hey NBS! Got a few new ones today. My first up is yet another DIPA from Foreign Objects... these guys have been brewing at different places lately, but this seems to be one brewed at Two Roads, featuring Mosaic and Vic Secret hops. Great sounding combo... I'm expecting a really dank and earthy beer with strong tropical, pulpy fruit notes based on the two hops highlighted.

This beer looks a lot less hazy than I figured it would, so perhaps it will surprise me in some other ways as well! It's a deep, orange-toned color with golden highlights if held up to light. Thin but retentive foamy head... good legs that dissipate over a few minutes in my glass, as well as pretty decent lacing that similarly fades for the most part. Lots of free-floating sediment throughout the body. Not the most attractive or convincing FO beer I've had, but it's alright.

Nose is fairly in-line with what I expected, which is cool. Very dank, resinous and berry-forward, as Mosaic is wont to be. Immense tropical fruit with intriguing papaya, mango and tangerine pulp coming to the surface rather immediately. A touch grassy and a bit funky in a sense as well. Vic Secret is really pushing the dank pine here, so if you like that note, you're bound to enjoy this right from the outset.

Intense palate upfront, with papaya, tangy citrus, earthy/dank undertones and a touch of wild berry flavors coming to the fore. However, this is very yeasty with a dull finish, unfortunately... just doesn't pop as much as it probably should. Perhaps all that sediment in suspension is not really doing wonders for this batch. Still, I enjoy the overripe tropical character and resinous zip in the beginning of each sip. A good beer, but by no means one of my favorite FO offerings. Wanted to like it a bit more, but it seems to peter out toward the end of the palate.

    Good afternoon, NBS!

Thanks @lordofthewiens for the start, and all the other starts, both past and future.

I did not post here last Sunday as I was battling a minor cold, which is usually accompanied by the loss of taste.

I came home from the dealership yesterday with a gas/electric hybrid, which was surprising to me. But I’m very happy with my new car, and enjoying this here beer while actually reading the manual because there are so many new features and functions I’m unfamiliar with.

Earlier today I swung by Wet Ticket, 5 miles from my house, for a couple crowlers and bottles of their coconut/vanilla imperial porter celebrating anniversary number 2. I’ll feature their beers here today, starting with Spanktown, a West Coast style IPA.

This beer is as bright as can be. They call it a West Coast IPA and it certainly looks how I would expect. Crystal clear, translucent, golden amber color with a densely packed, frothy, bone white head. Some streams of carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass. Lots of lacing. A really attractive IPA.

The aromas are not jumping out the glass, but notes of sweet bready malt, pine, grass, earthy/spicy hops that remind me of dried parsley/oregano, lemon and orange citrus.

The flavor is orange/lemon citrus, and again, some earthy and spicy hop flavors. Some grapefruit pith. A sweet malt profile that quickly shifts to bitter hops mid and back palate. The finish is long, bitter and semi dry.

The mouthfeel is nice. Moderate carbonation that pricks the tongue a bit. Neither full bodied nor syrupy, nicely competing the seemingly, relatively low 6.4% ABV.

Here we have a solid, West Coast style IPA that perfectly meets my anti-haze needs. It’s defining characteristics are the bright appearance and the nice bitterness.

    Cheers, people!

After a bit of work this morning, I'm hoping to settle in with hoops and a few new beers this afternoon. Starting with a Kolsch:

This was a nice-looking beer in the glass - nearly clear with only a slight haziness. It cleared a bit as it warmed, demonstrating some chill haze. The color was a bright yellow-straw and a standard pour produced a medium-sized white head. Aroma was there, but it was a bit elusive and restrained, featuring white bread and faint floral notes. The taste followed the nose with a light breadyness, balanced with grass, lemon, orange, and floral notes. Moderate bitterness with a very clean and dry finish. Medium-bodied with a clean feel. Overall a well-crafted session beer, but it didn't really pop in any area. Cheers and I hope to return!

I agree with you. Tore gaps it was not the best review. This beer is not in the upper echelon of IIPAs, but it measures up very well with the tier just beneath, especially cosidering the value aspect.

Thanks to @lordofthewiens for the great sendoff as usual. I'm trying to get myself back into the habit of posting here on NBS as it is something I have enjoyed greatly in the past. It is a warm rainy Sunday here on top of Quimby Mt here in NH. The layer of ice that is left cover what was my lawn is slowly disappearing. I had to stop and watch a flock of about 30 turkeys cross the road just up from the house this morning. Maybe this is spring, but I always expect one last punch from old man winter before he is done for the season. I'll move on to my new beer for today.

This is another great one in the BA Framinghammer series to me.
This beer pours a dark brown color with a thin creamy dark tan head which disappears quickly.
The nose is totally about smores lots of sweetness from the marshmallow with hints of chocolate and graham crackers in the back. There is also the wonder bourbon lurking further back .
The taste well is more to the chocolate and bourbon with the sweetness and the graham crackers following behind. I really like the way all this blends together.
The mouthfeel is well that of a great baltic porter a little thinner than I would like in a beer with many things going for it.
Overall this is one of my favorite Framinghammers lots of great flavors from the adjuncts and still a great bourbon taste in the end.

Greetings fellow NBSers! A sunny spring day here in the Fourth Corner. Last night was the first bout of the local roller derby season, and I performed my usual duties in the beer garden.

We're nearing the end of NBS BIF #9, and I'm starting today with a beer from @CanConPhilly , Trendler Pils from Tired Hands: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/28383/181146/

    New Wild Ale Sunday (Week736)
Greetings fellow NBSers, from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY. A grey day with torrents of rain, which we need three times a week from now until end of October and this mushroom picker will be happy. Crazy wet day of excessive work concentrated into four hours.

Apropos nothing I must add the non sequitur that musicians are the most unreliable class of people I have known and loved for the last forty five years. Just got back from a music writing session that was minus the musician.

Not having music put to lyrics is thirsty work, and I have opened this Captain Lawrence Barrel Select Pomegranate. Pretty sure I had a taster of this at the event where I purchased it, but can recall nothing. Excited to drink it, as it has been cellared here for five years, and CL mixed ferm beers are sorta hit or miss when cellared. Let's get a taste, shall we?

Well, there is definite pomegranate tart fruit in the aroma, some light vinegary tart as well, general over ripe funk notes, with intriguing sweetness a light and delicious accompaniment.

More tart than expected, puckering in a good way, also less sweet, full of sharp, juicy pomegranate. Many layers to the tart and funk, at times its overpoweringly tart, at times it is searingly earthy dry, at times there are soft layers of subtle tart, at times ripe fresh fruit notes are evident. It is a beer that morphs along the way of warming and opening up, with an end of sip that is all about deep earthy, spicy fruit funk and puckery tart

Spritzy carb., med. bodied for style, easy drinking despite strong flavors, it has a soft feel, with a finish that is an intense, but clean, linger of funk and fruity tart.

Likely some of this will change as I drink the next glass, then I'll add review to database. This is quite delicious, really digging it more and more as it opens, Don't know how you'd acquire one of these, but def. worth a shot if you see one/some, though it isn't better than yearly release Barrel Select Gold.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

A second NBS this week, a trip to Brick and Feather (10 minutes away) for a Firkin of their porter doctored with mint and cocoa. Yes think Girl scout Thin Mint. Excellent treatment and a nearly full house on this grey day. They have an IPA using BRU-1 hops that I hope will be a staple beer for them. Drinks like a big APA, all tropics and quite delightful

T - More pine apple than the aromatics, orange reduction, more biscuit and apricot marmalade.
M - Soft feel, sweet start quickly evens out, then a citrus drying wave moves through. Finish is tropical and in perfect balance.
O - A very good IPA with full display of new hop BRU-1 so much smooth orange/pine apple in this wonderful offering.

NBS! I wish the S was Saturday this week as I had the chance to try several awesome new beers in Chicago yesterday. Now I’m home and opened one up I had in my cellar but probably aged just a bit too long (iirc ~2 years) hence the short review. Everything yesterday was better but that happens sometimes... (I also forgot to take a picture until I was at the end of the bottle, oy vey)

    M: Medium-bodied
O: I can tell this would have been a bit better when younger though still a good porter and drinking fairly well aged

I agree. Love side by sides (reading them as well as performing them). If I join in a little later this afternoon, it will likely be a gose side by side as I've got a selection of them to choose from currently: a couple from Westbrook, one from Evil Twin, and one from South Africa made with sorghum about which I'm definitely quite curious.

 love that first quote. It's a phenomenon to which I can certainly relate. Sometimes words or phrases come out that... really... don't exactly pertain to a normal arrangement of letters, but it just seems like the most natural way to describe what you're trying to describe.

I agree with the latter point as well. Among many other laudable things Fremont does, they are great at identifying and understanding each component of what they are doing, and celebrating it. One of those things is a focus on local sourcing and the like, and I agree it's nice to see them be so proactive in shining a light on the local bounty we by which we find ourselves surrounded. They've long done that with the hops, but it's cool to see them highlight the local grains as well.
    Glad you're enjoying the box!

    Synopsis:
Bourbon-soaked pancakes. The bourbon is strong with this one, but so is the maple, which imparts the fragrance, but thankfully not the sweetness, of maple syrup. More bitter than sweet. Personally I prefer the coffee version of this, as the maple here stomps on the dark chocolate loveliness of the base beer quite a bit. But this is still a tasty, big-boy stout. Thanks again Arthur!

A beer from Palestine, eh? Seems at least like a unique oddity to find in my local market, but I've also heard it's really good. My buddy who gave me this beer implored I review it for NBS, and described it as a surprisingly roasty schwarzbier. I think he was expecting a more pedestrian style from this brewery (who only make a lighter colored lager other than this brew, at least as far as what's in our market), but he was impressed enough to bestow upon me his final bottle of it. Thanks Pat!

Pours an impenetrable, dark and deep brown color that actually borders complete inky blackness even when held up to light. Holy hell, this is terrifying. I would probably assume it's a small batch imperial stout just from the initial pour, other than the lighter-colored, khaki-like head that doesn't really build up too high, leading me to automatically default to assuming this is either an unfiltered Euro dark lager, a really dark bock, or a schwarzbier.

The nose is roasty and lightly-sweet with burnt caramel, chocolate cookie and lighter herbal notes that definitely plant it in the schwarz category in my view. A touch vegetal if I really inhale deeply, but it's not quite at the "turning me off" level, just a slight sniff I notice here and there. This almost has a "pastry stout" nose to it, in all honesty. The level of chocolate malt and roasty, deep toffee notes is pretty insane in my humble opinion.

Of course, it's definitely on the lighter-bodied side of things compared to those dense and heavy beers. This leads off each sip with roasty coffee, burnt caramel and toffee, along with dusty Belgian chocolate-like notes toward the finish. Herbal hop suggestions with light leafiness. A bit earthy as well. Clean and crisp finish... obviously a lager. Very drinkable and enjoyable. I think this would be great for a fireside beer on an Autumn evening... quite a cool drink. I would never pass up a chance to drink this one, especially for its kinda unique claim to fame of its unusual geographical provenance. Recommended!

Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Sippers and commentators. And thank you to Dick and Craig for continuing to moderate this thread! Pastry stouts seem to be an in-thing these days. My entry today is Flexitarian, an Imperial Stout brewed with coconut, coffee, and white chocolate. It's a collaboration between Magnify Brewing Co. and Aslin Beer Company. It was a limited release this week; one bottle per customer. Given the sweet adjuncts I figured I shouldn't wait too long to drink it.

As expected, it's quite sweet but the coconut, chocolate, and coffee taste very fresh and they blend nicely. This Stout's best attribute is its mouthfeel: very rich and creamy. This is a dessert beer in the truest sense of the word - and a delightful one. Here's my full review:

    4.26/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25

Reviewed 5 days after bottle release. Poured from 500 ML bottle into a Magnify tulip glass. It pours almost ink black with dark walnut and slight cola hues at the bottom of the glass. The creamy, medium-mocha head dissipated quickly leaving a film of creamy lacing. The fragrant nose features milk chocolate, coffee, vanilla, cinnamon, and lots of coconut. It has a strong pastry stout aroma. Coconut is the initially prevalent taste but there is also creamy vanilla, cinnamon, coffee, and lots of chocolate. All the adjuncts taste very fresh. It's most definitely on the sweet side. There is almost no bitterness. As the glass sits, the flavors increasingly blend until they are seamless. The best attribute of this Stout is its feel: it's viscous and super creamy. The carbonation is on the low/moderate side and it drinks below its 12.6% ABV. This is a prime dessert beer. Overall, Magnify, with some help from Aslin Beer Company, proves that it can play to win the pastry stout game.

I hope you're all enjoying your new beer(s) today. As always, the reviews are informative and fun to read. Cheers!

I always enjoyed an anecdote from Keith Richards. It probably dates back to recording one of his solo albums. Keith and the other musicians would start working at night, but day by day, they would get to the studio a little later each time. This continued until they finally ended up arriving at the studio in the morning at the same time that most people were getting to their regular jobs. Keith looked around and noted how they were in sync with the majority of other people. Finding this unacceptable, he declared that the band needed to just go home and reset their clocks again. (or something to that effect)

    Canned 3/13/19. Consumed from a 16oz teku.
L: Straw yellow in color. Flirts on the boundaries between unfiltered and hazy appearance. Minimal head formation from a standard pour and zero lacing.
S: Mosaic hops dominate the aromas. To me, mosaic resembles berry-like smells. Add the mosaic + blueberries and this thing smells like berries (no surprise). Subtle vanilla presence as well with moderate milky sweet presence.
T: Really tasty. Upfront, it tastes like your usual NEIPA. Lemon-forward with mild hop complexity. Then as the flavor comes to a finish, you get hit with waves of blueberry flavor and vanilla. The vanilla and lactose comprise the majority of the aftertaste with traces of blueberry. It tastes more like bluberrys N' cream than an IPA overall.
F: Medium in body, light in weight. Low carbonation allowing a creamy, silky texture.
O: Wasn't sure how this was gonna be but wound up impressed. This is a W on Moonraker's part.
