You can call me a psychopath, but I really don’t mind IPAs far past their prime. In fact, I still very much enjoy them. Preferrably ones with a sturdier malt bill, but even still...There’s something to be enjoyed of them.

I’m having a Founders Azacca IPA packaged well before 2019. Still, it’s hitting a good flavor profile for me. Shit, I remember having a GLBC Rye of the Tiger about a year ago (the beer was retired probably 4+ years ago from now) and it tasted like a nice aged mini Barleywine.

I don’t see what’s wrong with old IPAs. They develop their own charm. I like a little slow, proper oxidization every once in a while. Sue me. :innocent:

I tend to let some sit around sometimes and have no problem for personal consumption. If I’m sharing I make sure they are fresh.

I’ve found some have minimal degradation. And some really old that are still tasty, though changed.

If someone gives me an older one then I might drink it but I wouldnt buy an ipa if I cant read or see the date.

Depends entirely on the IPA, storage, brewer, etc...

From my experience, Sierra Nevada IPA's hold up extremely well and are delicious months after the born on date. Even Celebration (though it's so much better fresh).

From a small growler bar I bought a case of IPA for around 75% off. It was 1+ years old.
The label was very difficult to tell who made it due to the design so I can't remember what it was.

But my wife and I enjoyed drinking those old IPAs. So what if they were malty. They were still definitely IPAs. Bitter with good resinous flavors.

I actually like them with about 3 or 4 weeks on them better than 1 or 2 weeks but that's just me.

I’m talkin well past the typical 90 day mark. A month old IPA is still quite acceptable IMO.

To some people anything over 14 days is a drain pour lol

I just think they're the best at around 21-30 days

I like the quite a few NEIPAs(Old Nation) with 2-3 months on them, just because it makes them softer and silkier. Hop character does not deteriorate at all. There are some breweries that fall off quickly on IPAs, and others like Sierra Nevada Celebration can be enjoyed well past 6 months. Short's IPAs hold up similarly to SN stuff too. I've drank Freedom of 78 past a year of date, and it was still awesome.

I'm actually about to pop the top on a Boss Tweed canned on 2/26 and pour it into a Teku lol

Biggest beer trend of 2019-2020: old IPAs.

I've had 90 minute and 60 minute that were multiple years old and they especially the 90 was very drinkable. Although I won't spend money on an older IPA it can be interesting to experiment.

I was with you until the "old IPA = Barleywine" trope. No. No. No.

I don't mind them. The very few IPAs that I have accidentally aged in my cellar, for years in some cases, were actually still pretty tasty when I drank them. But drinking them under those conditions is a totally different ballgame to drinking a freshly brewed IPA.

I'm not rich, and if I did that, wouldn't have tried half the beers on my list (wouldn't say its a beer wasteland, though).

Then again, I was never a huge hop fiend and tend to like balance/subtlety, along with more malty profiles.

Like someone else said, Sierra Nevada holds up well, and that's probably the brewery I've had the most from.

After seeing this thread last night, I had a dream where I was going through my cellar and finding all kinds of old IPAs. I'm not a big IPA drinker so that would never happen. Any I have I immediately drink fresh.

I personally am not a huge fan of old IPA's. I won't throw it out or dump it, I am not a psyco, but I prefer fresh also. Sometimes a few weeks old can also round it out a touch.
