I've seen many threads looking to trade a bottle of this beer and have wondered what it's really worth. Based on other threads, there are ~15,000 bottles to be released this year at a MSRP of ~$160. So far, it appears the bottles are being sold for more than this price. Also, it seems people are asking for some pretty big beers in return (Framboos, Blabaer, KH, Rare....). In the past I've traded for a couple bottles and while I think I gave up some great beers in these trades (Eclipse and Hunapuhs primarily) I kept it close to $4$. With these current trades it seems people want close to $4$ (even though they paid more than $160) and they want rarity as well. I'm hoping to get a bottle of this vintage, but if this is what people are accepting as the trading benchmark, I guess I'll just have to pass. What are your thoughts.

15,000 bottles sounds a lot like KH and Rare, neither of which are rare. They're good beers, but so is Utopias (if that's your thing - and, if you're ISO, it's your thing).

Edit: I do tend to agree re: Framboos/Blabaer type beers, although if someone wanted a Framboos + locals to make up $s, why not?

Its not rare. People are just stupid. Why the heck would I send anyone $200 worth of beer and pay the massive shipping cost to send a huge box far away when I can walk into a better quality bottle shop and just buy it?

My general rule is this: If a beer is listed on beermenus.com and the page has been recently updated, then its not rare. Because I have a chance to get it, it hasn't sold out before it gets a chance to go up on Beermenus, and its more than likely available at several (count 4-5) different places.

If this is a serious question, then the answer is no. I've asked.:slight_frown:

Whats the sudden interest in trading Utopias? I rarely saw this beer in the trading forum until now. The cost has always made it awkward to trade for and it's not too difficult to find anyways.

    Because it was recently released?

I was pretty confused by Foyston's article in the Oregonian, since that had always been my understanding as well.

You appear to be from MA. The home of Boston Beer Company. Perhaps it's not too difficult to find in you neck of the woods, but I don't think that's true for most of the country. Certainly not where I live.

Why did you question your answer? Utopias trades were somewhat rare to see in the years I've been here. Or maybe I just dont pay attention enough.

If you drop $160 on a bottle that sits around on shelves shouldering room with TNP and StB, be prepared to take a bath on costs if you are looking for the old hook and ladder uptrade.

By way of analogy with a much more horrible beer, I traded for a TnP and gave up Filmishmish + 2 citra + sans pagaie, the cost was off but both traders were happy, until I opened TnP, then i had a sad.

It's not to hard to find here in Milwaukee. Woodmans in Menom Falls still has two bottles left if you are looking for it.

There are 2 bottles in Casper right now but the price is close to $100 more than the last Utopias I bought in 2009. No thanks...

Utopias sits around in Mass for months/years at $160-$170. Don't trade with people who quote $200+.

As stated above, it's an awkward trade. I have zero problem running out and buying a $20 beer to hook somebody up for whatever in return. But $160? I really do need something rather interesting. Maybe not Blabaer, but a King Henry is the least somebody could start with for shelling out that kind of dough for them. Trading Utopias is basically a giant favor.

But I think one of the issues is that most people shouldn't need to ask someone to go get it and then trade it to them because it is everywhere and it sits around for a significant amount of time. Also, I'd assume that instead of someone trading you $160-$180 worth of beer for a Utopias, they'd be smart enough to just ask you if you'd do them a favor, send you the money for the Utopais + shipping, and have you mule one for them.

Unfortunately, that $200 price is the cost here in Orlando, Total Wine got 2 cases (6 in a case i think) about a month ago, as of yesterday they still had a case.

Would an older Utopias be worth picking up for trade? (there's a 2010 sitting on a behind-counter shelf somewhere collecting dust)

That would probably be worth a lot because there is no such thing as a 2010 Utopias.

    2009 or 2011, sure....but no 2010.

That's cute. I'm sure a bottle that doesn't sit on every shelf of BottleShop, USA has got to be worth something to someone.

That said, it's pretty damned unwieldy to arrange a fair trade behind this beer. The hell with that.

    Uh....what?

Not sure if you actually read my post, but what I'm saying is that there is no Utopias release from 2010.

Was mostly correcting your information rather than commenting on the trade-ability of such a bottle.
