Think I'll have some imperial stout with my Peruvian coffee this morning...WeldWerks' Coffee Maple Achromatic...

look: 3.75 | smell: 4.75 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5

Dark mahogany body, looks black in some light; relatively thin yet lasting tan head; frothy and bubbly; small blobs and fingers of foam cling to the inside of the glass. Intense aroma blend of dark roast coffee, caramel and toffee, charred grain; roasted nuts. The taste mirrors the aroma, perhaps a bit less intense, yet also highlighting some bitter and milk chocolate and whiskey notes; maple syrup notes are low-key but do contribute to the overall sweetness. Heavy body; smooth and viscous; soft warmth throughout; nice residual sugar heft coats the palate; semi-sweet, semi-dry.

The Peruvian coffee really accentuates this beer, with the maple syrup element keeping somewhat in the background. The interesting twist is that it is the coffee bean that are barrel-aged ("...the huge addition of barrel-aged Peruvian coffee from our friends at Zoe's Cafe, which was aged for several weeks in a spent Medianoche bourbon barrel before roasting..."). Well, this sample was canned 04/08/19, and so the coffee really shines since it is so relatively fresh in the mix. A must try...

I overlooked this beer at Coaltrain (in Colorado Springs) yesterday after work, but a fine young employee, out of the blue -- as they sometimes do -- turned me on to it...I am grateful...

Slightly cloudy golden orange body; head is thick, sticky and frothy. Intense pine aroma; floral. Well-balanced flavors; strong hop bitterness with a pine resin edge; subtle light malt grain backbone. Medium body; sharp and prickly on the palate; mostly dry mouthfeel overall.

A rock-solid IPA, crisp and spritely. Hop-forward with its flavor and mouthfeel and truly a worthy beer for consideration.
