I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts on a tasting order of these styles; Smoked Baltic Porter Russian Imperial Stout Rye Whiskey Russian Imperial Stout Rum Coconut Russian Imperial Stout Fernet Russian Imperial Stout Bourbon Cherry Vanilla Russian Imperial Stout Espresso Milk Stout Kettle Sour BA Oat Wine American Black Ale Dessert Stout Belgian Saison Rose Lager American Wild Ale American Brett Ale Rye American Wild Ale American Wheat Wine German Hefeweizen Braggot English Old Ale Rum English Old Ale Belgian Strong Ale American Pale American Strong Ale American IPA Black IPA
the best order is: 1. acquire a 27 gallon fish tank 2. open all bottles and can 3. Pour them into the fish tank in alphabetical order (as @dennis3951 suggested) 4. Drink through the curliest krazy straw that you have access to.
I'd suggest drinking them in the order you find them. Many of them are easy-to-find, while others will take some legwork. As someone said, you're not drinking them all at once, so only need to pay attention to the order of styles in each session. Rule-of-thumb is don't burn out your tastebuds with extreme tasting beers, and then expect to enjoy the beer you drink afterwards.
I don’t really do organized tastings any more, but you get past 5-6 beers it gets a bit unfair to the ones at the end. Depends on sample sizes I guess and how many people, bottle sizes, but 5 guys gives you about a 4 oz sample out of a bomber. Seems like a nice number, it’s enough to get a pretty good idea on what your drinking and not so much your hammered for the last one, and we usually saved what we thought might be best for last. Guys are usually driving too so 24 oz of big beers is getting up there. Just my opinion on this though.
Looking further at this list, many of those are not recognized styles, just very specific variations of recognized styles. For instance, while American Wild Ale is a style, Rye American Wild Ale isn't. Look here for a list of styles recognized by BeerAdvocate; https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/styles/
Odds of OP returning? I'm going less than 10% Although upon closer inspection it is not a brand new account. So what is the story with the insanely specific and unbelievable question?
I am hosting an 18-20 person tasting. Specific to what I in my cellar over the corse of 8 hrs. I didn't want to go into too much detail because does it really matter what specific beers they are. Just wanted suggestions but I think I have it handled, thanks for all the input.
That’s a big crew right there and a lot of beers, that many people seem a bit unwieldy. Good luck, food and water is just as important as the beers.
Agreed, I plan to have several gallons of water and several cheeses, salty snacks, and my wife will likely bake as well. It should be a fun event, the sample size being smaller should help. Sober rides have been strongly suggested. However we have plenty of floor space for those who dont.
Sounds like a party, the one thing with such a large crowd is guys may or may not drink every beer, a crowd that big is a bit looser than geeks sitting around a table sniffing and swirling beers. The last tasting I went to was a ticker party and I’m so far from a ticker it isn’t funny. Enjoy.
No, he’s throwing a big beer party with a lot of people with many beers. So perhaps the tasting part will be tough, don’t know that’s a lot of people. I’m taking it as a huge party with friends with a ton of different beers, different than 4 geeks at a table minutely pulling a beer apart taking notes and pictures. Sounds like fun to me.
Well now I just want notes from the event. and in all seriousness I would think about opening up "heats" of beers that are sort of cousins. Say the 5 RIS variants so you can have a string of mini tastings with a bit of a cleanse between rounds. Sounds super fun and definitely don't dump it in a fish tank
Yeah, we do similar things. Anywhere from 4-20 of us will get together, everybody bringing more beer than will possibly get opened, and have at it. We just call it a bottle share. Several of us have our birthdays in a couple week window, and we hold a large bottle share. One year we had over 70 people over the course of the afternoon, and opened well over 120 containers of beer. And folks still took beer home.
